Instructor: Mr. Johnson has just arrived to a home

of an Arab colleague; she asks him, something cold

هو: شئ بارد

 

هو: استَمِع

هي: مرحباً بك يا سيد جونسون ..أهلًا بكَ ... كَيفَ حالُكَ ؟

هو: أنا بخير شكرًا.. وأنتِ ؟

هي: أنا بخير , هلْ تُحبُ أن تشَربَ شيئا ً؟ .. شئ بارد أم بعضا ً من الشاي؟.. ما حَالةُ الطَقسِ اليَوم ؟

هو: الطقس حار

هو: هلْ توجد مياه مَعدنية ؟

هي: بالطَبع

هو: استَمِع الي هذه المحادثةِ مرةً أخرى

هي: مرحباً بك يا سيد جونسون ..أهلًا بكَ ... كَيفَ حالُكَ ؟

هو: أنا بخير شكرًا.. وأنتِ ؟

هي: أنا بخير , هلْ تُحبُ أن تشَربَ شيئا ً؟ .. شئ بارد أم بعضا ً من الشاي؟.. ما حَالةُ الطَقسِ اليَوم ؟

هو: الطقس حارّ

هو: هلْ توجد مياه مَعدنية ؟

هي: بالطَبع

Instructor: Now imagine you are an American man

and in an evening conference in Damascus.

How do you greet an Arab acquaintance?

هو: مَساءُ الخَير

Instructor: And how might she respond to

your greeting

هي: عمتَ مساءً

Instructor: She says you speak Arabic very well now

هي: إنكَ تتحَدثُ العَربِيةَ جَيدًا الآن

هو: قٌل

Instructor: Usually the Arabs speak fast  

هو: عادةً يتحدَثُ العربُ بسُرعةٍ

Instructor: You ask her can you speak slowly

هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد

هو:هلْ تستَطِيعينَ التَحدُثَ بِبُطء ؟

هو: بِبُطء

هو: هلْ تستَطِيعينَ التَحدُثَ بِبُطء ؟

Instructor: How does she say “I speak?”

هي: أنا أتَحدَث

Instructor: And do you remember how he says,

I will drive slowly

هو:  سأقودُ بِبُطء.....سأقودُ ببطء

Instructor: So how would she say,

I will speak slowly now?

هي: سأتَحدَثُ بِبُطءٍ الآن

هي: أتَحدَث

هي: سَوف أتَحدَث

هي: سَوف أتَحدَث بِبُطء الآن

Instructor: How do you ask here if

she can speak slowly?

هو: هلْ تستَطِيعين التَحدُثَ بِبُطء ؟

Instructor: How does she say I will speak slowly now?

هي: سأتَحدَثُ بِبُطءٍ الأن

Instructor: She asks how long you’re staying.

. First say next Friday

هو: الجُمُعة القَادمة

Instructor: Tell her, I will stay until next Friday

هو: سَأبقى هنا  لِلجُمُعةِ القادِمة

Instructor: I have a lot of meetings

هو: لدَىّ الكثير مِن الإجتِماعَات

هو: ﺇجتِماعَات

هو: قُل

Instructor: I will leave Friday afternoon for Aleppo

هو: سَأرحَلُ يومَ الجُمُعةِ عصرًا إلى حَلب

هو: عصرًا

Instructor: did you notice

the Arabic word used for "afternoon"?

هو: عصرًا .....عصرًا

Instructor: How does she say

"I went to Aleppo last week"?

هي: ذَهبتُ ﺇلى حَلب الأسبوعَ الماضي.

Instructor: me too, I had a lot of meetings.

هي: وأنا أيضًا كان لَدىّ الكثيرُ من الإجتِماعَات

Instructor: She continues and tomorrow

I will go to Lattakia

هي: وسَوف أذهَبُ غدًا إلى اللاذِقية

Instructor: Ask her again,

can you speak slowly?

هو: هلْ تستَطِيعينَ التَحدُثَ ببطء ؟

Instructor: Do you remember the word for fast

or quickly?

هو: سريعا ً .. سريعا ً

Instructor: Try to tell her, she speaks very quickly

هو:أنتِ تتَحدَثينَ سريعًا جدًا

Instructor: Now try to ask her,

how is one go to Lattakia from here

هو: كيفَ للمرءِ أن يذهَبَ إلى اللاذِقية من هنا ؟

Instructor: Ask here, would you go by train?

هو: هلْ سَتذهَبينَ بالقِطار؟ .. القِطار

Instructor: Or would you take the plane?

هو: أم سَتأخُذينَ الطَاِئرة؟

Instructor: She says this time I’ll take the train.

هي: سَأذهَبُ بالقِطار هَذهِ المَرة.

هي: سَأذهَب

هو:سؤال

Instructor: And how is one

go to Aleppo from here?

هو: و كيفَ للمرءِ أن يذهَبَ إلى حَلب من هُنا؟

Instructor: She tells you,

I went to Aleppo by plane last week

هي: ذَهبتُ ﺇلى حَلب بالطَائِرة الأسبوع المَاضي.

Instructor: To travel by plane is

more expensive but faster

هي: السَفرُ بالطَائِرة أغلى ولكِن أسرَع

Instructor: Now her husband says good evening,

how do you respond?

هو: مَساءُ الخَير

هي : عمتَ مساءً

Instructor: He invites you to join in there place

next day for a tour to the old town,

ask how is one go to your place?

هو: كيفَ للمرءِ أن يذهَبَ إليكم؟

هو: إليكم

Instructor: Ask your acquaintance can you

guide me on the map?

هو: هلْ تستَطِيعينَ أن تُرشِديني على الخريطة ؟.

هو: تُرشِديني

Instructor: Here is the same too,

ask the man the same thing

هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد

هو: هل تستَطِيعُ أن  تُرشِدَني ؟

تُرشدَني

تُرشِدَني

تستَطِيع

هل تستَطِيعُ أن  تُرشِدَني ؟

هو: إسأل

Instructor: say can you guide me first to a

woman and then to a man?

هو:هل تستَطيعين أن ترشديني؟

هي: هل تستَطِيع أن تُرشِدَني ؟

هي :تُرشدِيني.. تُرشِدَني

Instructor: How would she say

to you I can guide you?

هي:أستَطِيعُ أن أرشدَكَ

هي: أ ُرشدَك

Instructor: How would she say I can speak slowly?

هي: أستَطِيعُ أن أتحَدثَ ببطء

هي: أتحَدث

Instructor: She says I will speak slowly now

هي: سأتحَدثُ ببطءٍ الآن

Instructor: She tells you yes of course I can guide you

هي: نعَم بالطَبع أستَطِيعُ أن أ ُرشدَك

Instructor: She asks you can you guide me on the map

هي: هل تستَطِيعُ أن تُرشِدَني على الخَريطة ؟

Instructor: Now try to say I can guide you to a woman

هو: أستَطِيعُ أن أ ُرشدَكِ

هو: أ ُرشدَكِ

Instructor: She says our address is
123 Al-Thawrah Street

هي:عُنوانُنا هو 123 شارِعُ الثورة

Instructor: She asks are you coming by bus

هي: هل أتَيتُ بالحافلة؟

Instructor:  she tells you:"

ok take the bus until al- shohadaa square"

هي: حسنا ً, خُذ الحافلة إلى ساحةِ الشهداء.

Instructor: And then take Abid Street

هي: ثُم إسلُك شارٍع عابد

Instructor: You don’t see the street on the map;

she can’t see and find it either,

how does your husband say to her, I can guide you

هو: أستَطِيع أن أ ُرشدَكِ

هو: أ ُرشدَكِ

Instructor:  Ask her can you guide me on the map

هو: هل تستَطِيعينَ أن تُرشِديني على الخَريطة ؟

Instructor: She says take

the first right to Al-Thawrah street

هي:اسلك أول يمين إلي شَارِع الثورة

Instructor: How does her husband say,

we live in Al-Thawrah Street

هو: نَحنُ نَسكُن في شارِعُ الثورة

Instructor: Our address is 123 Al-Thawrah Street

هو:عُنوانُنا هو 123 شارعُ الثورة

Instructor: Now you are going to visit a friend

and want to bring some sweets, you stop a

young woman on the street saying, excuse me miss.

هو: عفوا ً يا أنسة

Instructor:  Hear it and say sweets shop

هو: إستَمِع وأعِد

هو:متجرُ الحلوى

هو: حل

هو: وى

هو: حَل

هو: حَلوِى

هو: متجرُ الحَلوى

Instructor:  Ask her, do you know where
the sweets shop is

هو: هلْ تَعرِفين أين يُوجَد متجرُ الحَلوى؟

Instructor: She talks very fast, ask her:

" can you speak slowly please?"

هو: هلْ تستَطِيعين التحدثَ ببطء ؟

Instructor: How would she say,

I’m sorry are you an American?

هي: عفوًا, هلْ أنتَ أمرِيكي؟

Instructor: She says, you speak Arabic very well

هي: أنتَ تتحَدثُ العَربِيةَ جيدًا

Instructor: You thank her and say I would like to

buy sweets from a sweets shop

هو: أشكرك .... أودُ أن أشتَريَ حلوىَ مِن متجرِ الحلوى

Instructor: Can you guess how

to say the sweets shop

هو: متجرُ الحلوى

هو: الحلوى

هو: قل

Instructor: I’m looking for the sweets shop

هو: أبحثُ عن متجرِ الحلوى

Instructor: She says I will speak slowly now

هي : سَأتحَدث ُ ببُطءٍ الأن

Instructor:  You pull out a guide book saying,

one moment I can guide you

هو: لحظة واحدة , أستَطِيعُ أن أُ ُرشدَكِ

Instructor:  this is the map

هو: هَذِه هي الخَرِيطة

Instructor: Do you know where the sweets shop is?

هو: هلْ تَعرِفين أين متجرَ الحلوى ؟

Instructor: Can you guide me on the map?

هو: هلْ تستَطِيعينَ أن تُرشِديني على الخَرِيطة ؟

هو: تُرشِديني

Instructor: She says I know a good sweets shop

هي: أنا أعرِفُ متجرَ حلوى جَيد

Instructor: Not far from here

هي: ليس بَعيدًا عن هُنا

هي: ليس بَعيدا ً

Instructor: How would she say, we don’t need a map

هي: نَحنُ لَا نحتاجُ إلى خَريطة.

Instructor: She says I know a

good sweets shop in Al-shohadaa square

هي: أعرفُ متجرَ حلوى جَيد بِساحة الشهداء.

Instructor: She points and says look

Abed Street is over there.

هي: أُ ُنظر.. شارٍع عابد هُناك

هي: أُ ُنظر

Instructor: She continues,

take the first right on Bernie street

هي: إسلك أول يَمين إلى شارِع عابد

هي: خُذ اول يمين إلى شارع عابد

Instructor: Now you want to ask a colleague

about her weekend plans, first do you remember

how she asks you, what did you do today?

هي: مَاذا فعَلتَ اليَوم؟

Instructor: Hear and ask a woman,

what you will do today

هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد

هو: ماذا سَتفعلِين اليَوم ؟

هو: س....تفعَلين

هو: سَتفعلِين

هو: ماذا سَتفعلِين اليَوم ؟

Instructor: Do you remember how to say this Friday

هو: هَذه الجُمُعة

Instructor: Ask your colleague what will you do today

هو: ماذا سَتفعلِين اليَوم ؟

Instructor: Now try to ask her what she will do next Friday

هو: ماذا سَتفعلِين هَذه الجُمُعة ؟

هو : كيف تقول ؟

Instructor:  Sunday afternoon

 

هو: عصر الأحد

هو: إسأل

Instructor: Would you like to come over to

our place on Sunday afternoon

هو: هلْ تحبينَ زيارتنا عصر الأحد ؟

Instructor:  yes, I would like to come over

هي: نعم ، أحب الزيارة

هي: أ ُحب الزيارة

Instructor: Referring to two people she says

come over to your place

هي: زيارتُكُما

Instructor: Continue to use this form until otherwise,

she says I would like to come over to your place.

هي: أ ُحبُ زيارتكما

Instructor: But this Sunday I can’t

هي: لَكِن هذا الأحد ، لا أستطيع

هو: قُل الأن

Instructor: Next Sunday

هو: الأحَدُ القَادِم

هو: الأحَدُ القَادِم

هو: قُل

Instructor: I’m sorry, not this Sunday but

next Sunday

هو:أنا آسفة.... ليس هذا الأحَد لكن الأحَدَ القَادم

Instructor: Try to ask her what she will do

next Sunday

هو: ماذا سَتفعلِينَ يَوم الأحَد القادم ؟

هو: إسأل

Instructor: Can you come over next Sunday

هو: هلْ تستطيعين الزيارة الأحَدَ القادم ؟

Instructor: Try to say next Sunday afternoon

هو: عصر الأحد القادم

Instructor: Ask her would you like to have

lunch with me and my wife

هو: هلْ تحبين تناولَ الغَداءِ مَعي ومَع زَوجِي ؟

Instructor: Would you like to come over to our

place next Sunday afternoon

هو: هلْ تحبينَ زيارتنا عصرَ الأحدِ القادم ؟

Instructor: come over to our place

هو : زيارتنا .....زيارتنا

Instructor: She accepts but now she needs

directions

Instructor: She asks how is one go to your place

…..for two people only.

هي: كيفَ للمرءِ أن يذهَبَ إليكما ؟

Instructor: Can I go to your place by bus?....

for two persons only

هي: هلْ أستَطِيعُ أن أذهبَ إليكما بالحافلة ؟

هو: أجِب

Instructor:  Yes of course, you can go by bus

هو: نعَم بالطَبع .. أنت تستطيعُ أن تذهبَ بالحافلة ؟

Instructor: it’s not far

هو: إنه ليس بَعيدًا

هو: ليس... بعيدًا

Instructor: She asks again, how is one get to your place?..

...for two persons.

هي: كيف للمرءِ أن يذهبَ إليكما ؟

هو: قٌل

Instructor: I can guide you, this is the map

هو: أنا أستطيعُ أن أ ُرشدَكِ ,  هَذه هي الخَريطة

Instructor: How would she ask you, can you guide

me on the map

هي: هلْ تستَطِيع أن تُرشِدَني على الخريطة ؟

هو: قٌل

Instructor: Our address is 123 Abed Street

هو: عُنوانُنا هو 123 شارِع عابد

Instructor: Say to her, yes I can guide you

هو: نعَم أستَطيعُ أن أ ُرشِدَكِ

Instructor: You point to the map saying,

look Abed Street is here

هو:أ ُنظري شارِع عابد هنا

Instructor: How would she ask if you can guide her?

هي: هلْ تستَطِيعُ أن تُرشِدَني ؟

Instructor: Say to her, yes I can guide you on the map

هو: نعَم أستَطيعُ أن أ ُرشِدَكِ على الخَرِيطة

Instructor: You guide her she says I know a
good sweets shop on Al-Thawrah Street

هي: أنا أعرِفُ متجرَ حلوى جَيد في شارِعِ  الثورة

هي: متجر حلوى

هي: أنا أعرِفُ متجرَ حلوى جَيد في شارِع الثورة

Instructor: She offers to bring sweets;
you say great, we can talk about politics
next Sunday

هو: عَظيم، نَستطِيعُ أن نَتحدثَ عن السياسةِ الأحَدَ القَادِم

هو: قٌل

Instructor: We can have lunch together

هو: نَستطِيعُ أن نتَناولَ الغَداءَ معًا

Instructor: And then we can talk about politics

هو: ثم نَستطِيعُ أن نتحدثَ عن السياسة.

Instructor: Now you’re talking to a colleague,
she asks you what you will do today after work

هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد

هي: مَاذا سَتفعَلُ اليَوم بعد العَمل ؟

هي: تَفعل

هي: سَتَفعل

هي: مَاذا سَتَفعل ؟

Instructor: How would she say to you, you will do?

هي: سَتَفعل

هي: مَاذا سَتَفعل ؟

Instructor: Now you ask her why,
what will you do after work?

هو: لماذا؟ ... مَاذا سَتَفعَلِين بَعد العَمل ؟

هو: سَتَفعَلِين

Instructor: She says that she bought a nice
book for her son

هي: إشَترَيتُ كِتابًا لطيفًا لابني

Instructor: did you notice the word "nice"
in Arabic?

هي: لطيف ....لطيفًا

Instructor: She invites you to a café saying,
we can drink a cup of coffee together

هي: نسَتطِيعُ أن نَشرَبَ فنجانًا من القهوةِ معًا

Instructor:  When she guides it to you, you
say this book is very beautiful

هو: هذا الكِتابُ جميلٌ جدًا

Instructor: She wants to know why it was so expensive,
how she would ask you can I see it

هي: هلْ أستطيعُ رؤيتَه ؟

Instructor: After examining the book tell her,
it’s very old

هو: إنه قَديمٌ جدًا.. إنه قَديمٌ جدًا

هو: كيف تقول

Instructor: Another book

هو: كِتاب آخَر

Instructor:  She says I bought another book for
my daughter

هي: إشَترَيتُ كِتابًا آخَرَ لابنتي

Instructor:  You see it’s not an antique, tell her this
book is not old

هو: هذَا الكِتابُ ليَس قديمًا

Instructor: She asks you can I see it

هي: هلْ أستطيعُ رؤيَته؟

Instructor: You guide her to a book, saying
… but this one is also beautiful

هو: لكن هذا الكِتاب جميلٌ أيضًا

Instructor: How would you say this Friday?

هو: هَذه الجُمُعة

Instructor: Now she asks you, what you will
do next Friday

هي: مَاذا سَتَفعلُ الجُمُعة القَادِمة ؟

هي: سَتَفعل

هي: ماذا ستفعل ؟

Instructor: She invites you to come over to meet
her family you ask how is one go to your place

هو: كيفَ للمرءِ أن يذهَبَ إليكم ؟

Instructor: Indicating your guide book, ask her
can you guide me on the map

هو: هلْ تستَطِيعين أن تُرشِديني على الخريطة ؟

Instructor: She answers yes look I can guide you

هي: نعَم أ ُنظر أستَطيعُ أن أ ُرشِدَك

Instructor: Our address is 123 Al-Thawrah Street

هي: عُنوانُنا هو 123 شارِع الثورة

Instructor: You say I know a
good sweets shop on Al-Thawrah Street

هو: نعَم , أعرِفُ متجرَ حلوى جَيد بشارِع الثورة

Instructor: This is the end of unit sixty one
and the end of today’s lesson
