هو: عفوا ً يا أنسَة .. هلْ تَعرِفينَ أين يُوجَدُ متجرُ الحَلوى مِن فَضلِك ؟

هي: أعرِفُ متجرَ حلوى جَيد بِمَيدان الشهداء

هو:عَظيم  .... أحبُ أن أشتَريَ حَلوى

هي: أُ ُنظر.. شارٍع عابد هُناك

هي: لِكي تَذهَبَ إلى متجرِ الحَلوى... خذ أولَ يَمين إلى شارِع عابد

هو: شُكرا ً جَزيلا ً

هو: استَمِع الي هذه المحادثةِ مرة ً أُ ُخرى

هو: عفوا ً يا أنسَة .. هلْ تَعرِفين أين يُوجَد متجرُ الحَلوى مِن فَضلِك ؟

هي: أُ ُنظر.. شارٍع عابد هُناك

هي: لِكي تَذهَبَ إلى متجرِ الحَلوى... خذ أولَ يَمين إلى شارِع عابد

هو: شُكرا ً جَزيلا ً

Instructor: now you are an American man
in Damascus, you ask a woman,
do you know where the sweets shop is

هو: هلْ تَعرِفين أين يُوجَدُ متجرُ الحلوى ؟

Instructor: ask her can you speak slowly please.

هو: هلْ تستَطِيعينَ التَحدُثَ بِبُطءٍ مِن فَضلِك ؟

Instructor: she says, I’m sorry are you American?

هي: عفوا ً, هلْ أنتَ أمرِيكيّ؟

Instructor: you speak Arabic very well

هي: إنكَ تتحَدثُ العَربِيةَ جيدا ً

Instructor: How would you say, yes I’m American

هو: نَعَم , أنا أمرِيكيّ

Instructor: How would you ask her
if she can speak slowly?

هو: هلْ تستَطِيعينَ التَحدُثَ بِبُطء .. بِبُطء ؟

Instructor: How would she say
I will speak slowly now?

هي : سَأتحَدث ُ بِبُطءٍ الأن .. سَأتحَدث ُ

Instructor: Now ask her, can you guide
me to the sweets shop on the map

هو: هلْ تستَطِيعينَ أن تُرشِديني إلى متجرِ الحلوى على الخَريطة ؟

Instructor: while she was asking you for
directions, how would she ask if you can guide her?

هي: هل تستَطِيعُ أن تُرشِدَني ؟

Instructor: And how would you say,
yes you can guide her.

هو : نعَم أستَطِيعُ أن أ ُرشدَكِ

Instructor: Now the woman you were speaking to,
says there is a good sweets shop on Al-Thawrah Street

هي : يوجَد متجرُ حلوى جَيد فِي  شَارِعِ الثورة

Instructor: she says I can guide you

هي:  أنا أستَطِيعُ أن أ ُرشدَك َ

Instructor: she points and says the first right is
Al-Thawrah Street, Literally the first right
is Al-Thawrah Street.

هي: أوَل يَمِين هوَ شَارِع الثورة

Instructor: the sweets shop is to the left

هي : متجرُ الحلوى يكونُ إلىَ اليَسار.

Instructor: How would you ask her if she can
speak slowly?

هو: هلْ تستَطِيعينَ التَحدُثَ بِبُطء ؟

Instructor: How would she say
I will speak slowly now?

هي : سَأتحَدث ُ بِبُطءٍ الأن .. سَأتحَدث ُ

 

Instructor: now she says the sweets shop is
on the Al-Thawrah Street

هي : متجرُ الحلوى يكونُ فِي شارِعِ الثورة

Instructor: later, you ask a colleague
what you will do next Friday.

هو: ماذا سَتفعلِينَ الجُمُعةَ القَادِمة ؟

Instructor:  first she asks why

هي : لِماذا؟

Instructor: how would she say you’re doing
to a man?

هي: تَفعَل

هي: تَفعَل

Instructor: how would she ask you what will you
do this Friday?

هي: ماذا سَتفعَلُ هَذه الجُمُعة؟ .. سَتفعَل

Instructor: Ask her again, what will you
do this Friday?

هو: ماذا سَتفعلِينَ الجُمُعةَ القَادِمة ؟

Instructor: Ask her, would you like to have
lunch with us?

هو: هلْ تحبينَ تناولَ الغَداءِ مَعنا ؟

Instructor: how would you ask her, what
will you do next Friday?

هو: ماذا سَتفعلِينَ الجُمُعةَ القَادِمة ؟

Instructor: she says this Friday I can’t

هي: هذه الجُمُعةِ ... لا أستطيع

Instructor: and she says on Saturday I have
a lot of work.

هي:  في السَبتِ لديّ عملٌ كثير.

Instructor: but next Sunday

هي:  لَكِن الأحَدَ القَادِم .. الأحَدَ القَادِم

Instructor: she says I won’t be doing anything

هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد

هي: لَن أفعَلَ شَيئًا ..ً أفعَلَ .. أفعَل

هي: لَن أفعَلَ شَيئاً

Instructor: how would she ask you,
what will you do next Friday?

هي: ماذا سَتفعَلُ الجُمُعةَ القَادِمة ؟

Instructor: she says, next Sunday
I won’t be doing anything

هي: الأحدُ القادم لَن أفعَلَ شَيئًا

Instructor: now say to her, if you won’t
be doing anything next Sunday.

هو: إذَا لن تَفعَلي شيئا ً الأحَدَ القادم

Instructor: ask her, would you like
to come over to our place

هو: هلْ تحبينَ زيارتنا ؟

Instructor: we can talk about politics

هو: نَستطِيعُ أن نَتحدثَ عن السياسة

Instructor: she asks Sunday afternoon

هي: عصرَ الأحد

هي: عصرَ الأحد

Instructor: tell her, yes my wife likes to talk about politics

هو: نعم , زَوجي تًحبُ أن تَتحدثَ عن السياسة.

Instructor: we can talk about politics
together next Sunday afternoon.

هو: نَستطِيعُ أن نَتحدثَ عن السياسةِ معًا عَصرَ الأحدِ القادم

Instructor: how would she say,
I won’t do anything next Sunday

هي: لَن أفعَلَ شَيئًا الأحَدَ القادم

Instructor: now referring to you and your
wife’s place, she asks ‘, but how is one
get to your place?....for two persons

هي: لكِن كيفَ للمرءِ أن يذهَبَ إلَيكُما ؟

Instructor: how would she ask you, can you guide me?

هي: هلْ تستَطِيعُ أن تُرشِدَني ؟

هي: هلْ تستَطِيعُ أن تُرشِدَني ؟

Instructor: you say, our address is 123 abed Street

هو: عُنوانُنا هُو 123 شارِعُ عابد

Instructor: she doesn’t know that area,
she asks, can you guide me on the map

هي: هلْ تستَطِيعُ أن تُرشِدَني على الخريطة ؟

هو: أجِب

Instructor: yes, I can guide you

هو: نعَم أستَطيعُ أن أ ُرشِدَكِ

هو: أ ُرشِدَكِ

هو: قٌل

Instructor: Our address is 123 Abed Street

هو: عُنوانُنا هو 123 شارِع عابد

Instructor: still referring to you and your
wife’s place, she asks can I go to your place by bus.

هي: هلْ أستَطِيعُ الذهابَ إلَيكما بالحافلة ؟

Instructor:  You pull out a map and say,
yes I can guide you

هو: نعَم أستَطيعُ أن أ ُرشِدَكِ

Instructor:  now you’re meeting some friends for
lunch but you’re running late, first do you remember
the word for “late”.

هو : مُتأخِر

هو: أنَا مُتأخِر

Instructor: try to say “I’m late”

هو: أنَا مُتأخِر

هو: أنَا مُتأخِر

هو: قٌل

Instructor:  I’m sorry. I’m late.

هو: عفوا ً. أنَا مُتأخِر .. مُتأخِر

Instructor: she answers it doesn’t matter

هي: لا يهم

هو: قٌل

Instructor: the bus was late.

هو: الحافلة كانت متأخرة

Instructor: the bus here in Arabic is a feminine
word so the word "late" also becomes feminine,
listen again.

هي: متأخرة ....متأخرة

Instructor: and now I’m late. I’m sorry

هو: الآن أنا مُتأخِر .. . أنا آسف

Instructor: on another day a colleague asks you,
what would you do today?

هي: ماذا سَتفعَلُ اليَوم ؟

Instructor: she says, come to our place

هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد

هي: احضَر إلينا

هي: احضَر .. احضَر إلينا

Instructor: we can have a glass of tea

هي: نسَتطِيعُ أن نَشرَبَ فنجانا ً مِن الشَاى

Instructor: come to our place after work

هي : احضَر إلينا بَعدَ العَمل

Instructor: she invites you saying, we will have
dinner at home

هي:  سنتَناوَلُ العَشاءَ في المَنزِل

Instructor: hear it how she says to you

هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد

Instructor: Literally, come to have dinner with us

هي: احضَر لتتَناوَلَ العَشاءَ معَنا

هي: لتتَناوَل العَشاء

هي: احضَر لتتَناوَلَ العَشاءَ معَنا

هو: قٌل

Instructor: thank you very much

هو: شكرا ً جزيلا ً

Instructor: she gets out a map and says I can guide you
on the map

هي: أستَطيعُ أن أ ُرشِدَكَ على الخريطة

Instructor: in order to go to Al-Thawrah Street you
can take the bus

هي: لِكي تَذهَبَ إلى شَارِعِ الثورة ، تستَطيعُ أن تَأخُذَ الحافلة.

Instructor: come to have dinner with us

هي: إحضَر لتتَناوَلَ العَشاءَ معَنا

Instructor: Ask again, can you guide me on the map?

هو: هلْ تستَطِيعينَ أن تُرشِديني على الخريطة ؟

Instructor: ask her, how is one can go to
the Al-Thawrah Street

هو : كيفَ للمرءِ أن يذهَبَ إلى شارِعِ الثورة ؟

Instructor: she says in order to go from here

هي: لكَي تَذهَبَ مِن هُنا

هي: لكَي تَذهَب

Instructor: you will take the bus or a taxi

هي : سَتَأخُذُ الحافلة أو سَيارةَ أ ُجرة

Instructor: how would your friend say,
come to have dinner with us

هي: احضَر لتتَناوَلَ العَشاءَ معَنا

Instructor: you arrive late, how do you say
"I’m sorry, I’m late"?

هو: أنا آسف.. أنا مُتأخِر.

Instructor: now you’re at work, say the bus
was late this morning

هو: الحافلة كانت متأخرة هذا الصباح  

هو: قٌل

Instructor:  I’m sorry .I’m late

هو: أنا آسف.... أنا مُتأخِر.

Instructor: after work a colleague asks you
what you will do later

هي: مَاذا سَتفعَلُ فيما بعد ؟  

Instructor: tell her, I won’t be doing anything

هو:  لن أفعَلَ شيئا ً

Instructor: how would she say to you come to
have a glass of tea?

هو : احضَر لِتشرَبَ فِنجانًا مِن الشَاي

هو : احضَر

Instructor: now she says come to have dinner with us

هي: احضَر لتتَناوَلَ العَشاءَ معَنا

هي:تتَناوَل العَشاء.....لتتناولَ العشاء

Instructor: later, on your way to your colleague's house,
ask a woman” Do you know where the sweets shop is?”

هو: هلْ تَعرِفينَ أين متجرُ الحلوى ؟

Instructor: she starts speaking very quickly,
ask her: "can you speak slowly?"

هو: هلْ تستَطِيعينَ التحدثَ بِبُطء؟

Instructor: how would she say, I’m sorry
I will speak slowly now.

هي : أنا آسفة .. سَأتحَدث ُ ببُطءٍ الآن

Instructor: point to the map; ask her:
" can you guide me on the map?"

هو: هلْ تستَطِيعينَ أن تُرشِديني على الخَرِيطة ؟

Instructor: how would she say that she
can guide you to the Al-Thawrah Street?

هي: أستَطيعُ أن أ ُرشِدَك َ إلىَ شَارِعِ الثورة

Instructor: you’ve arrived as the shop is
closing say, I’m sorry. I’m late

هو: أنا آسف.. أنا مُتأخِر.

Instructor: another day ask a female
colleague what will you do next Sunday

هو: ماذا سَتفعلِينَ الأحَدَ القادم ؟

Instructor: she says, I won’t be doing anything

هي :  لن أفعَلَ شيئا ً

هو: قٌل الأن

Instructor: if you won't be doing anything

هو: إذا كنت لن تفعلِي شَيئا ً

Instructor:  ask her, would you like to come
over to our place?

هو: هلْ تحبينَ زيارتنا ؟

Instructor: my wife likes to talk about politics.

هو: زوجي تحبُ التحدثَ عن السياسة

هو: زَوجي تًحب أن تتحدثَ عن السياسة

هو: زَوجي تًحب أن تتحدثَ عن السياسة

Instructor: you draw a quick map, so she can see
how to get to your place, how would she ask if
you can guide her?

هي: هلْ تستَطِيعُ أن تُرشِدَني ؟

Instructor: we can talk about politics together
next Sunday afternoon.

هو: نَستطِيعُ أن نَتحدثَ عن السياسةِ معًا عَصرَ  الأحدِ القادم.

Instructor: how would she say I won’t be doing
anything next Sunday?

هي: لَن أفعَلَ شَيئًا الأحَدَ القَادِم

Instructor: Now imagine you’re a woman from
Boston in a conference dinner in Damascus,
the man sitting next to you asks you,
where do you live in America

هو: أين تَسكـُـنينَ في أمريكا ؟

هو: أين تَسكـُـنين

Instructor: try to answer I’m from Boston

هو: بُوستون

هي: أنا مِن بُوستون

هي: أنا مِن بُوستون

Instructor: ask him, and you?...Are you an Arab?

هي: وماذا عنكَ ؟ هل أنت َ عربيّ؟

Instructor: he answers; yes I’m from Alexandria in Egypt

هو: نعم ....أنا من الاسكندرية في مصر.

هو: نَعَم , أنا مِن مصر

هو: من الاسكندرية

Instructor: Do you remember how to say, Egypt’s very beautiful?

هي : مَصرُ جَميلةٌ جدا ً

هي: جَميلة

Instructor: Egypt is feminine word.. try to refer to it
… try to say that it is a very beautiful country.

هي: هي دولةٌ جَمِيلةٌ جدا ً

هي: هي دولةُ جَمِيلةُ جدا ً

Instructor: ask him, how the weather is in Egypt now?

هي: ما حَالةُ الطَقسِ في مصر الأن ؟

Instructor: he tells you, it’s cold, you want to ask, does it snow?
 .. First the word "snow"

هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد

هي: ثَلج

هي: ثَلج

Instructor: now hear. Does it snow?

هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد

هي: هلْ يتَساقَطُ الثَلج؟

هي: ْ يتَساقَط .. قَط .. يتَساقَطُ

هي: هلْ يتَساقَطُ الثَلج؟

Instructor: Literally, you’re asking, does snow fall?

Instructor: what is the Arabic word for “snow”?

هو: ثَلج

Instructor: and how do you ask, Does it snow?

هي: هلْ يتَساقَطُ الثَلج؟

Instructor: answer "no, snow does not fall"

هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد

هو: لا ...لا يتساقط الثلج

هو:لا ....لا ...يتساقط

هو: لا يتساقط الثلج.

هو: كيف تَقُول

Instructor: it snows or literally "snow falls"

هو: يتَساقَط الثَلج

هو: يتَساقَط الثَلج

Instructor: say it on the negative

هو: لا يتساقط الثلج

Instructor: how would he say, sometimes it rains

هو: أحيانًا تمطر

هو: أحيانًا تمطر   

Instructor: in the north

هو: في الشمال

Instructor: the weather is cold now

هو: الطَقسُ بَارِدٌ الأن

هو: الطَقسُ بَارِد .

Instructor: he continues, sometimes it rains

هو: أحيانًا تمطر

Instructor: he says, it rained last week

هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد

هو: أمطرت الإسبُوعَ المَاضي

هو: أمطرت

هو: امطرت

هو: أمطرت الإسبُوعَ المَاضي

Instructor: how would you say, snow doesn't fall....

هي: الثلج لا يتساقط

هو : الثلج لا يتساقط

هو: قٌل الأن

Instructor: it snows

هو: يتَساقَط الثَلج

Instructor: how does he say, it doesn’t snow?

هو: لا يتَساقَط الثَلج

Instructor: but last week

هي: لكِن في الإسبُوعِ المَاضي

Instructor: it’s snowed a little in Boston

هي: تَساقَطَ الثَلجُ قليلا َ في بوستون

Instructor: say that you haven’t been to Alexandria

هي : لم أزُرْ الأسكندرية من قبل

هو: قٌل

Instructor: I would like to go there.

هي: أ ُحبُ أن أذهَبَ إلى هُناك

Instructor: ask again if it snows

هي: هلْ يتَساقَطُ الثَلج ؟

هي: هلْ يتَساقَطُ الثَلج ؟

Instructor: he answers, last week it rained a little

هو:  الإسبُوعُ المَاضي أمطرت قليلا َ

Instructor:  but it doesn’t snow

هو: لكن الثَلجَ لا يتَساقَطُ

هو: قٌل مَرةً أ ُخرى

Instructor: I would like to go to Alexandria

هي: أ ُحبُ أن أذهَبَ إلى الاسكندرية

Instructor: in winter

هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد

هي: في الشتاء

هي: شتاء .. في الشت .. في الشتاء  

Instructor: try to ask; is the weather cold?

هي: هل الطقسُ بارد ؟

Instructor: in winter

هي: في الشتاء

هي: في الشتاء

هو: قٌل

Instructor: yes, it is cold ….but snow doesn't fall.

هو: نعم الطقسُ بارد ...و لكن َ الثلجَ لا يتساقط.

Instructor: I would like to go to Alexandria

هي: أ ُحبُ أن أذهَبَ إلى الأسكندرية

Instructor: is the weather hot in summer?

هي:هل الطَقسُ حارٌ في الصَيف ؟

Instructor: summer

هي: الصيف .... الصيف

هي: الص....الصيف

Instructor: he answers, no, it’s not hot. It’s very nice.

هو: لا .. ليَس حَارًا . إنه لطِيفٌ جدا ً

Instructor: and it doesn’t rain in summer.

هو: و لا تمطرُ في الصَيف

Instructor: try to say in Boston it snows
a lot but not in the summer.

هي: في بوستون يتَساقَطُ الثَلجُ كثيرا ً .. لكن ليسَ فى الصَيف

Instructor: last week it snowed a little

هي: فى الإسبُوعِ المَاضي تَساقَطَ الثَلجُ قليلا َ

Instructor: now how would he say, this summer?

هو: هذا الصَيف

هو: هذا الصَيف

Instructor: I would like to go to
Boston with my wife

هو: أ ُحبُ أن أذهَبَ إلى بوستون معَ زوجي

Instructor: how would you say to a man,
come to have dinner with us.

هي: احضَر لتتَناوَلَ العَشاءَ معَنا

Instructor: try to tell him, come to
Boston in the summer

هي: احضَر إلى بوستون في الصَيف

هي: احضَر إلى بوستون

Instructor: say that it’s a beautiful city

هي: هي مدينةٌ جَمِيلة

Instructor: you gave him a photo of a winter
in Boston, say:" look it snowed a lot."

هي: أُ ُنظر .. يتَساقَط ُ الثَلجُ كثيرا ً

Instructor: This is the end of unit sixty two and the
