هو: هَذهِ فِكرَةٌ جَيدة .. لَكِن أريدُ أن أبحَثُ عن نَظَارتي أولا ً

Instructor: imagine that you and your wife are at home
in Damascus; ask her have you seen my glasses?
هو:هَل رَأيتِ نَظَارتي ؟
Instructor: tell her I bought a nice book
هو: اشَتَريتُ كِتابًا جَيدًا
هو: كِتاب جَيد
Instructor: but I can’t read without my glasses
هو: لَكِن لا أستَطيعُ أن أقرأَ بِدون نَظَارتي
Instructor: your wife has pictures of her sister’s new place,
she says “at her apartment there is a pretty garden in the back”
هي: توجَد في شَقِتها حَديقَةٌ صَغيرةٌ في الخَلف
Instructor: you want to see the pictures, how do
you” I’m looking for my glasses”
هو: أنا أبحَثُ عن نَظَارتي
Instructor: your wife hands you, your glasses and
says” they were under the newspaper”
هي: كَانوا تَحتَ الجَريدَة
Instructor: referring to a photo she says my
sister’s place is big but
هي: بَيتُ أُختي كَبير ... لكِن
Instructor: at her apartment the garden is very small.
هي: في شَقِتها الحَديقة صغيرةٌ جِدا ً
Instructor: she has a garden in the back
هي: لَديها حَديقَةٌ في الخَلف
Instructor: you agree saying, her apartment isn’t small
هو: شَقتُها لَيسَت صَغيرة
هو: شَقتُها
Instructor: but this garden is very small.
هو: لَكِن هَذهِ الحَديقَةِ صغيرةٌ جدًا
هو: لَكِن هَذهِ الحَديقةِ صغيرةُ جدًا
Instructor: now you and your wife are visiting a friend of hers,
how do you say to her female friend
“your apartment is very pretty?”
هو: شَقَتُكِ جَميلَةٌ جِدا ً
Instructor: do you park in front of the street
هو: هَل تَقفين بالسيارةِ أمامَ الشَارِع ؟
Instructor: she tells you yes in the front, not in the back
هي: نَعَم في الأمَام لَيسَ في الخَلف
Instructor: today my car is in front of the street
هي: اليَوم سَيارَتي أمامَ الشَارِع
هو: اسأل
Instructor: why don’t you park in the back of your apartment?
هو: لِماَذا لا تَقفينَ خلفَ شَقِتِكِ ؟
Instructor: she tells you there is a small garden in the back
هي: توجَد حَديقَةٌ صَغيرةٌ في الخَلف
Instructor: now you suggest, how about we have a walk?
هو: مَا رأيُكِ أن نَسيرَ على الأقدام ؟
Instructor: she answers; we can have a walk to the public park
هي: نَستَطيعُ أن نَسيرَ إلى الحَديقَةِ العَامّة
Instructor: and later we can go to the museum
هي: وبَعدها سَنذهَبُ إلى المُتحَف
هو: هي تَقُول مَرة أُخرى

Instructor: do you remember how a waiter asks, what would you like to order?

Instructor: this is a very common Arabic expression, literally means all the people

Instructor: here’s the word for “to have lunch” meaning they have lunch

هي: أن يَتنَاولُوا الغَداء

Instructor: how does she say everyone likes to have lunch outside?
هي: كُلُ النَاسِ يُحِبون َأن يتنَاولُوا الغَداءَ في الخارِج

Instructor: in the summer everyone likes to have lunch outside

Instructor: you take a look at the menu, how do you say the menu in Arabic. Remember it’s literally “list the food”

هي: بِدونِ نَظَارتي لا أستَطيعُ أن أقرَأَ قَائِمةَ الطَعاَم

Instructor: noticing the long line in the entrance, she says every one like to have lunch outside
هي: كُلُ النَاسِ يُحِبون َأن يتنَاولُوا الغَداءَ في الخارِج
Instructor: commenting on the line he says” everyone is on the street today”
هو: كُلُ النَاسِ في الشَارِعِ اليَوم
Instructor: you are making plans for the afternoon, ask until when the museum is open
هو: إلى مَتى المُتحَفُ مَفتوح؟

Instructor: now is another day and a college is showing you the city. You are hungry, she says to you. There is a good restaurant
هي: يُوجَد مَطعَمٌ جَيد
Instructor: just 1 minute far

Instructor: I have another meeting today
هو: لَدىّ اجتِماعٌ أخَر اليَوم
Instructor: at three o’clock in the afternoon
هو: السَاعة الثالثَة مَساءا ً
هو: قُل
Instructor: I would like to go to the museum but not today
هو: أُحبُ أن أذهَبَ الى الَمُتحَف .. لَكِن لَيسَ اليَوم
Instructor: she says “ok we can go to the museum tomorrow”
هي: حسنا ً يُمكِنُنا الذَهابَ إلى المُتحَفِ غَدا ً
Instructor: later in the week, you meet a colleague in a café, you apologize for being late and she says me too I arrived two minutes ago
هي: أنَا أيضا ً وَصَلتُ مُنذُ دَقيقَتين
Instructor: she shows you a guide book saying I have a book about Aleppo
هي: لَدىَ كِتابٌ عَن حَلَب
Instructor: then she says next week I’m going on vacation to Aleppo

Instructor: as you leave you say, I’d like to come back to here again
