Instructor: Mr. George is speaking with a colleague Mrs. Abdeen, you hear

هُو: إيطَاليا

Instructor: Italy

هُو: صَباح الخَير سَيدة /عابدين

هِي: طابَ صباحُكَ  سَيد جُورج..كِيفَ حَاُلك َ

هُو: بِخَير شُكرا ً ...وأنتِ ؟

هِي: بِخَير شُكرا ً .. أنتَ ذاهِبٌ فِي عَطلَة؟ .. حقاً  ؟

هُو: نَعَم غَدا ً صَباحا ً ..... سأذهَبُ إلى إيطاليا مَع زَوجَتي جِين

هِي: تَصحبُك َ السَلامَة

Instructor: you just heard

هُو: تَصحبُك َ السَلامَة

Instructor: have a good trip…..or literally may safety be with you

هُو: إستَمٍع للمُحادَثَة مَرة أُخرى

هُو: صَباح الخَير سَيدة عابدين هُو: صَباح الخَير سَيدة /عابدين

هِي: طابَ صباحُكَ  سَيد جُورج..كِيفَ حَاُلك َ

هُو: بِخَير شُكرا ً ...وأنتِ ؟

هِي: بِخَير شُكرا ً .. أنتَ ذاهِبٌ فِي عَطلَة؟ .. حقاً  ؟

هُو: نَعَم غَدا ً صَباحا ً ..... سأذهَبُ إلى إيطاليا مَع زَوجَتي جِين

هِي: تَصحبُك َ السَلامَة

Instructor: you’re an American at a customer’s office in Damascus, how do you tell the receptionist that you want to see Mr. Abdeen

هُو: أُريدُ أن أرى السَيد/ عابدين

هُو: أُريدُ أن أرى السَيد/ عابدين

Instructor: how does she ask you what your name is?

هِي: ما إسمُك .. ما إسمُك مِن فَضلِك؟

Instructor: tell her that your name is Jack Harrison

هُو: إسمي جاك هاريسون

Instructor: how do you say you want to see Mr. Abdeen

هُو: أُريدُ أن أرى السَيد /عابدين

هُو: السَيد

Instructor: she tells you wait for Mr. Abdeen at his office please

هَي: إنتظَر السَيد عابدين في مَكتَبهِ مِن فَضلِك

Instructor: later you’re back in your office, how do you ask a female colleague “would you like to come over to our place?”

هُو: هَل تحبينَ أن تأتي عندنا ؟

Instructor: Saturday evening

هُو: السَبت مساءً  

Instructor: she answers:" yes, I will come over on Saturday"

هِي : نَعَم سأتي السَبت

Instructor: referring to both of you she says to your place

هِي: عندكما

Instructor: how does she ask just you “when are you travelling on a vacation”

هِي: مَتى سَتُسافِرُ فى عُطلَة ؟ سَتُسافِر

Instructor: me .. I have too much work

هُو: أنا عندى عَمَلٌ كَثير

Instructor: tell her I’m not travelling on vacation

هُو: لَن أُسافِرَ في عُطلَة .. أُسافِر

Instructor: now try to say may be I will go in January or February

هُو: ربما سأذهَبُ فِي يَناير أو فِبراير.. أذهَب

هُو: ربما سأذهَبُ فِي يَناير أو فِبراير

Instructor: later you‘re speaking with another colleague ask her when are you going on vacation?

هُو: مَتي ستَذهَبينَ في عُطلَة؟

Instructor: she says in February

هِي: فِي فِبراير

Instructor: she answers but on Tuesday morning

هِي: لَكِن الثُلاثاء صباحَا ً .. يَوم الثُلاثاء

Instructor: I’m going to Italy

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: سَأذهَبُ إلى إيطَاليا .. إيطَاليا

Instructor: but not on vacation

هِي: لَكِن لَيس فى عُطلَة

Instructor: here’s how she says I have a lot of work in Italy

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: عندى عَملٌ كَثيرٌ فى إيطَاليا .. فى .. فى إيطَاليا

هِي: عندى عَملٌ كَثيرٌ فى إيطَاليا

Instructor: she says Tuesday morning I’m travelling to Italy

هِي: الثُلاثاء صباحَا ً سَأذهَبُ إلى إيطَاليا

Instructor: but not on vacation I have too much work

هِي: لَكِن لَيس فى عُطلَة ...عندى عَملٌ كَثير

Instructor: you want to invite her out do you remember how to say" too bad"

هُو: يا خسارة

هُو: يا خسارة

Instructor: Arabic speakers frequently add” يا “at the beginning to say that’s too bad or what a shame……and here is another form of "too bad"

هُو: يَا للأسَف

هُو: يَا للأسَف

Instructor: she is confused” she asks why”

هِي: لِماذا ؟

Instructor: you say again "what a shame"

هُو: يَا للأسَف

Instructor: there is a symposium

هُو: توجَد ندوة

Instructor: there’s a symposium Thursday evening

هُو: توجَد ندوة الخَميس مساءً   

Instructor: I would like to go to the concert with you

هُو: أحبُ أن أذهَب إلى الندوة مَعكِ

Instructor: she says that’s too bad

هُو: يَا للأسَف

يا خسارة

Instructor: but I’m not travelling on vacation

هِي: لَكِن أنا لَستُ مُسافِرةً في عُطلَة

Instructor: I will return on Saturday morning

هِي: سأعوُدُ السَبتَ صباحا ً

Instructor: maybe we can go together later

هِي: ربما نستطيعُ أن نَذهبَ معا ً فيما بعد

Instructor: you want to say: " yes, after your return "

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: نَعم بَعد عَودتِكِ مِن السَفَر.. .. بَعد عَودتِكِ مِن السَفَر

Instructor: try to say maybe we can go together after your return

هُو: ربما نستطيعُ أن نَذهَبَ معا ً بَعد عَودتِكِ مِن السَفَر

Instructor: here’s how you wish someone a good trip

هُو: تَصحبُك ِ السَلامَة

هُو: تَصحبُك ِ السَلامَة

Instructor: it almost sounds like good bye; literally you’re saying “with safety” or “in peace” say to her have a good trip

هُو: تَصحبُك ِ السَلامَة

هُو: تَصحبُك ِ السَلامَة

Instructor: there is a symposium on Thursday

هُو: توجَد ندوة في الخَميس

Instructor: that’s too bad

هُو: يَا للأسَف......يا خسارة

Instructor: but we can go together after your return

هُو: لكن نستطيعُ أن نَذهَبَ معا ً بَعد عَودتِكِ مِن السَفَر

Instructor: you are travelling to Italy on Thursday

هُو: أنتِ مُسافِرةٌ إلى إيطَاليا في الخَميس

Instructor: how does she say “what a shame?”

هِي: يَا للأسَف.....يا خسارة

Instructor: what’s the word for "to return or to go back"

هِي: أعُود .. أعُود

Instructor: now how would she say will return or will go back

هِي: سأعُود .. سأعُود

Instructor: and how would she say I won’t return on Saturday morning

هِي: لَن أعُودَ السَبتَ صَباحا ً

Instructor: unfortunately there isn’t a symposium on Saturday evening

هُو: للأسف لا توجَد ندوة السَبتَ مَساءا ً .. لا توجَد

Instructor: but there is a good film

هُو: لَكِن يُوجَد فِيلم جَيد .. فِيلم جَيد

Instructor: she says I would like to watch the film with you

هِي: أُحبُ أن أُشاهِدَ الفِيلمَ مَعكَ .. الفِيلم

Instructor: how do you say "I watch"?

هى: أشاهد

هو: أشاهد

هُو: قًل

Instructor: we can go to the movies together

هُو: نستطيعُ أن نَذهَبَ إلى دار الخيالة معا ً

Instructor: after your return

هُو: بَعد عَودتِكِ مِن السَفَر

Instructor: she says: "yes, alright"

هِي: نعم ، حَسنا ً

Instructor: how about we go on Saturday night after your return?

هُو: مَا رأيكِ أن نَذهَبَ السَبت مَساءا ً بَعد عَودتِكِ مِن السَفَر؟

Instructor: have a good trip to Italy

هُو: تَصحبُك ِ السَلامَة إلى إيطَاليا .. تَصحبُك ِ السَلامَة

Instructor: she replies but I’m not going yet

هِي: لَكِني لَستُ ذاهبة ً بَعد

هِي: لَكِني لَستُ ذاهبة ً بَعد

هُو: قُل

Instructor: after your return we can go to the movies

هُو: بَعد عَودتِكِ مِن السَفَر نستطيعُ أن نَذهَبَ إلى دار الخيالة

Instructor: later a colleague asks you:" do you have a few minutes?"

هِي: هَل عندكِ بضع ُ دَقائق؟

Instructor: how would she answer "after work"  literally after the work

هِي: بَعد العَمَل.. العَمَل

Instructor: today after work

هُو: اليَوم بَعد العَمَل.. العَمَل

Instructor: OK, what time is it?

هُو: حسناً .. كَمِ الساعة ؟

Instructor: she tells you it’s ten after six

هيِ: السَاعَة السَادِسة وعَشر دَقائِق

Instructor: she adds my husband is at home now

هِي: زوجَي في البَيت الأن

Instructor: sometimes he works a lot

هِي: أحياناً  هو يَعمَلُ كَثيرا ً

Instructor: but tonight he prefers to stay at home

هِي: لَكِن اليَوم هو يُفَضِلُ أن يمكثً في البَيت

Instructor: good I want to see your husband too

هُو: جَيد... أحُبُ أن أرى زَوجَك أيضا ً

Instructor: how would you say after work literally after the work?

هُو: بَعد العَمَل

هُو: قُل

Instructor: I have a few minutes after work today

هُو: عندى بضع دَقائِق بَعد العَمَل اليَوم

Instructor: she asks would you like to come over our place

هِي: هَل تُحبُ أن تأتي عندنا ؟

Instructor: referring to two people ask to your place?

هُو: عندكما ؟

Instructor: yes, we can have a cup of coffee

هِي: نَعَم .. نستطيعُ أن نَشرَبَ كوباً من القَهوة

Instructor: with a piece of chocolate cake

هِي: مَع قِطعَة من كعكة الشُكولاَتة

Instructor: now you are in a café with a colleague she orders another coffee, how does the waitress ask her if she wants milk

هي: هَل تُريدينَ حَليباً ؟

Instructor: she says no thanks but I want sugar

هِي: لا شُكرا ً ...لَكِن أُريدُ سُكَر

Instructor: then she asks you:" when will you go on vacation?"

هِي: مَتي سَتُسافِرُ فى عَطلَة ؟

Instructor: tell her in January or in February

هُو: فِي يَناير أو فِبراير

Instructor: she interrupts you and asks:" where is the sugar?"

هِي: أين السُكَر؟

Instructor:  you pass it to her and she asks “are you going to Italy?”

هِي: هَل أنت َ ذاهِبٌ إلى إيطاَليا؟

Instructor: yes I’m going to Italy in January

هُو: نَعَم سأذهَبُ إلى إيطاَليا في شَهر يَناير

Instructor: or perhaps in February

هُو: أو رُبما في شَهر فِبراير

Instructor: tell her I’m travelling on vacation

هُو: أنا مُسافِرٌ فى عُطلَة

Instructor: now your friend looks at her watch, she says it’s a quarter to seven

هِي: السَاعَة السَابعَة إلا الرُبع

Instructor: I have to leave now

هِي: لابُدَ أن أرحَلَ الان

Instructor: that’s too bad

هُو: يَا للأسَف

هُو: يَا للأسَف.....يا خسارة

Instructor: she thanks you for the coffee, how does she wish you a good trip

هِي: تَصحبُك َ السَلامَة

هِي: تَصحبُك َ السَلامَة

Instructor: now it’s another day and you’re at a friend’s office, ask the receptionist if Mazen is in his office

هُو: هَل مازِن في مَكتَبِه؟

Instructor: she answers no not now can you wait

هِي: لا لَيس الان هَل يُمكِنكَ أن تَنتَظِر؟ .. لَيس الان

Instructor: of course, I can wait for a few minutes

هُو: نَعَم أستَطيعُ أن أنتَظِر لبضع دَقائِق

Instructor: she tells you Mazen isn’t in his office now

هِي: مازِن لَيس في مَكتَبِه الأن

Instructor: can you wait here?

هِي: هَل تستطيعُ أن تَنتَظِرَ هُنا؟

Instructor: I can wait a few minutes

هُو: أستَطيعُ أن أنتَظِرَ لبضع دَقائِق

Instructor: you decide to get some coffee while you wait ask her if she would like coffee too

هِي: هَل تحبينَ أن تَشرَبي قَهوةً  أيضاً ؟ً

Instructor: she answers yes please

هِي: نَعَم مِن فَضلِك

Instructor: with milk or sugar?

هُو: بالحَليب أم بالسُكَر ؟

Instructor: you didn’t hear her reply, ask her:" do you want sugar?"

هُو: هَل تريدين َ سُكَر ؟

Instructor: she says:" no, with a little milk but without sugar"

هِي: لا .. مع قَليل مِن الحَليب لَكِن بِدُون سُكَر

Instructor: without sugar thanks

هِي: بِدون سُكَر ..شُكرا ً .. بِدون سُكَر

Instructor: how do you ask is Mazen here?

هُو: هَل مازِن هُنا؟

Instructor: how does she say:" no, he still is not here"

هِي: لا.. مَازال غَير مَوجُود

Instructor: she says that he still is not in his office

هِي: هو مَازال غَير مَوجُود في مَكتَبِه

Instructor: do you remember how to say :"I saw him"

هِي: رأيته .. رأيته

Instructor: try to say for her:" I haven’t seen him"

هِي: مَا رأيتَهُ .. مَا رأيتَهُ

Instructor: he is not here now

هِي: هُو لَيس مَوجُوداً الأن

Instructor: that’s too bad

هُو: يَا للأسَف.....يا خسارة

Instructor: she says I saw him after work on Thursday

هِي: رأيته بَعد العَمَل في الخَميس

Instructor: can you stay in his office

هِي: هَل تستطيعُ أن تَمكثَ في مَكتَبِه؟

Instructor: do you remember how to say "for you" to a man

هُو: لك َ

هُو: لك َ

Instructor: now try to say for him

هُو: لهُ

هُو: لهُ

Instructor: tell her I have a letter for him

هُو: عندى رِساَلة لهُ

هُو: لهُ

Instructor: but I can wait for a few minutes

هُو: لكن أستَطيعُ أن أنتَظِر لبضع دَقائِق

هُو: قُل

Instructor: I have a coffee for him too

هُو: وعندى قَهوَة لهُ أيضا ً

Instructor: and it’s hot

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: ساخِنَة .. نِة .. ساخِنَة

Instructor: how do you say that the coffee is hot?

هُو: القَهوَة ساخِنَة

هُو: القَهوَة ساخِنَة

Instructor: how does she say but Mazen still isn’t here

هِي: لَكِن مَازِن مازال َ لَيسَ هُنا

هُو: قُل

Instructor: I have a letter for him

هُو: عندى رِساَلة لهُ

Instructor: you brought coffee for her too, you want to ask her is your coffee cold? First here’s the word for cold when referring to coffee

هُو: بارِدَة .. بارِدَة

Instructor: now here is your coffee when you talking to a woman

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: قَهوَتِكِ .. قَهوَتِكِ .. قَهوَتِكِ

Instructor: try to ask her:" is your coffee cold?"

هُو: هَل قَهوَتُكِ بارِدَة؟ .. بارِدَة

هُو: هَل قَهوَتُكِ بارِدَة؟

Instructor: coffee is feminine, how does she tell you “no it’s not cold”

هِي: لا هِي لَيسَت بارِدَة

Instructor: referring to Mazen how do you say I have a hot coffee for him too

هُو: عندى قَهوَة ساخِنَة لهُ أيضا ً

هُو: عندى قَهوَة ساخِنَة لهُ أيضا ً

Instructor: ask her again:" is your coffee cold?"

هُو: هَل قَهوَتُكِ بارِدَة؟ .. بارِدَة

Instructor: referring to Mazen say I have a coffee for him too

هُو: عندى قَهوَة لهُ أيضا ً.. لهُ

Instructor:  how did you ask her if her coffee is cold

هُو: هَل قَهوَتُكِ بارِدَة؟

Instructor: she says no it’s very hot

هِي: لا هِي ساخِنَة جِدا ً

Instructor: how does she say that she likes the coffee hot?”

هِي: أُحبُ القَهوَة ساخِنَة

Instructor: I never drink the cold coffee

هُو: لا أشرَبُ القَهوَة بارِدَةً ، مطلقا ً

Instructor: she says there’s a chocolate cake over there

هُو: توجَد كعكة شوكُولاتَة هُناك

Instructor: she asks you:" do you want a piece of cake?"

هِي: هَل تريدُ قِطعَة مِن الكعكة ؟

Instructor: tell her no thanks

هُو: لا شُكرا ً

Instructor: ask her:" is your coffee hot?"

هُو: هَل قَهوَتُكِ ساخِنَة؟

Instructor: she says yes it’s very hot and very good

هِي: هِي ساخِنَة وجيدة جِدا ً

Instructor: referring to Mazen she says I saw him Thursday night

هِي: رأيتَهُ الخَميس لَيلا ً

Instructor: after work

هِي: بَعد العَمَل

Instructor: you say I have a letter for him

هُو: عندى رِساَله لَهُ

Instructor: she promises to deliver it to him saying the letter is in his office

هِي: الرِساَلَة في مكتبِهِ

Instructor: suddenly she remembers something and says:" but no excuse me "

هِي: لَكِن لا.... عَفوا ً

Instructor:  Mazen isn’t in his office today

هِي:  مازِن لَيسَ بِمكتَبهِ  اليَوم

Instructor: today is Thursday

هِي: اليَوم الخَميس

Instructor: Mazen is in Italy on vacation

هِي: مَازِن في إيطَاليا في عُطلَة .. في إيطَاليا

Instructor: joking you say:" too bad"

هُو: يَا للأسَف....يا خسارة

Instructor: she says again he is in Italy on vacation

هِي: هُو في إيطَاليا في عُطلَة

Instructor: you are wishing your colleague a good trip

هُو:مَازِن تَصحبُك َ السَلامَة

Instructor: and I have the cold coffee

هُو: وأنا عندى القَهوَة البارِدة

Instructor: he says:" when does he return?"

هو: متى سيعود ؟

Instructor: he will return in a week

هي: سيعودُ في أسبوع

Instructor: that's a lot

هو : هذا كثير

Instructor: but I can wait

هو : لكن أستطيعُ أن أنتظر

Instructor: or maybe I’ll see his wife

هو : أو ربما أرى زوجُه

Instructor: she replies: "that's a good idea"

هي: هذه فكرة طيبة .....هذه فكرة جيدة

Instructor: This is the end of unit 43 and the end of today’s lesson
