هي: سَنطلُب شَايًا... وبعَضَ الحَلوى
هو: هل تحبون كوبًا من الشاى ؟
هي: نريدُ إبريقًا من الشَاي .. شكرا ً

هو: طاب مساءُكم .. ماذا تَطلبون ؟

هي: سَنطلُب شَايًا... وبعَضَ الحَلوى
هو: هل تحبون كوبًا من الشاى ؟

Instructor: suppose that you and an acquaintance at a restaurant in
the evening, how is the way they greet you?
هو: طاب مساءُكم
هو: طاب مساءُكم
Instructor: how do you respond?
هو: مَسَاء الخَير
هو: طاب مساءُك
Instructor: he says here’s the menu
هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد
هو: هذه هي قَائِمة الطَعاَم
هو: هذه هي قَائِمة الطَعاَم .. الطَعاَم .. قَائِمة
هو: قَائِمةُ الطَعاَم ..... قَائِمةُ الطَعاَم
Instructor: How do you say the menu?
هو: قَائِمة الطَعاَم
Instructor: a little later, he asks you both what you would like to order.
هو: ماذا تَطلبون ؟
Instructor: how would your acquaintance ask the waiter what he recommends?
هي: بمَاذا تنصَحُنا ؟
هي: بمَاذا تنصَحُنا ؟
Instructor: the waiter says:" this tea is from Morocco, it’s very good"

Instructor: How do you say the menu in Arabic language?
هو: قَائِمةُ الطَعاَم
Instructor: literally you say “list the food”, the waiter
continues "this tea in the menu is very good"
هو: هذا الشَاي في قَائِمةِ الطَعاَم جَيدٌ جِدا ً
Instructor: he asks again what you would like to order.
هو: ماذا تَطلبون ؟
Instructor: you are still not sure; ask him again,
what do you recommend?
هي: بمَاذا تنصَحُنا ؟
Instructor: ask your female companion, how about ordering a pot of tea
هو: مَا رأيُكِ أن نَطَلبَ ابِريقًا مِن الشَاى ؟
هو: نَطَلب .... ما رأيُكِ ؟ .... إبريقًا من الشاي .
ما رأيُكِ أن نطلبَ إبريقًا من الشاي ؟
Instructor: she agrees; ask the waiter again, what do you recommend?
هي: بمَاذا تنصَحُنا ؟
Instructor: he points to one item, saying:" this tea is from Morocco"
هو: هذا الشَاي من المَغرٍب
Instructor: how would your companion say, I prefer this tea
هي: أنا أ ُفَضِّلُ هَذا الشَاي
Instructor: here’s how she says to you, how about ordering this tea?
هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد
هي: مَا رأيُكِ أن نَطَلبَ هَذا الشَاي ؟
هي: رأيُكِ .. مَا رأيُكِ
هي: مَا رأيُكِ أن نَطَلبَ هَذا الشَاي ؟
Instructor: the waiter asks you both what you would like to order.
هو: ماذا تَطلبون ؟
هو: أجِب
Instructor: we would like this tea
هو: نريدُ هَذا الشَاي
Instructor: the waiter asks:" a pot of tea?"
هو: إبِريق مِن الشَاى .. ؟
Instructor: your companion says to you:"yes and how about ordering….."
هي: نَعم, ومَا رأيُكَ أن نَطلُب.. مَا رأيُكَ
Instructor: some sweets
هي: بَعضَ الحَلوى
Instructor: tell the waiter, we will order a pot of green tea please?
هو: سنَطلُبُ ابِريقًا من الشَاىِ الأخضَر من فَضلِك.... ( ملحوظة للراوي بكسر اللام في كلمة "فضلِك " سواء في مخاطبة المذكر أو المؤنث)
Instructor: some sweets
هي: و بَعضَ الحَلوى
Instructor: he answers, yes very good sir.
هو: نَعم , جَيد جدا ً يا أخي
Instructor: now your companion says to you, you speak Arabic
very well. Where did you learn it?
هي: أنتَ تتَحدَثُ العَربيةَ جيد جدا ً .. أينَ تَعلمتَه ؟
هو: أجِب
Instructor: I learned Arabic language in America
هو: تَعلمت ُ اللغَةَ العَربيةَ في أمرِيكا .. تَعلمت ُ
Instructor: you grew up speaking English right?
هي: أنت َ كبُرتَ على التَحدَثِ باللغةِ الإنجليزية. ....صحيح ؟
هو: قُل
Instructor: yes, I tried to learn
هو: نعم... أنا حَاوَلتُ أن أتَعلُم
Instructor: when I was a student
هو: عندما كُنت ُ طَالِبًا
هو: عندما كُنت ُ طَالِبًا
Instructor: say that later you learn from an audio program
هو: بَعد ذَلك تَعلمت ُ مِن بَرنامَجٍ صَوتيّ
هو: قُل
Instructor: but Arabic is not easy
هو: لَكِنّ العَربيةَ لَيسَت سَهلة
Instructor: I didn’t grow up speaking Arabic
هو: لم أكبُر على التَحدُثِ بالعَربية
Instructor: she says, me I speak a little English
هي: .. أنا أتحدَث ُ الإنجليزيةَ قليلا ً
Instructor: how would she say that she learned at a university?
هي: تَعلمت ُ في الجامِعَة
Instructor: I really tried to learn English in America
هي: حقا ً... أنا حَاوَلتُ تَعلُمَ الإنجِليزية في أمريكا .
Instructor: tell her, you speak English very well
هو: أنتِ تتَحدَثينَ الإنجلِيزيةَ جيد جدا ً
Instructor: ask her, where did you learn it?
هو: أينَ تَعلمتيه ؟

هي: تَعلمت ُ اللغَةَ الإنجلِيزيةَ في الجامِعَة
Instructor: I didn’t grow up speaking English
هو: لم أكبُر على التَحدُثِ باللغةِ الإنجلِيزية
Instructor: I really tried to learn
هي: حقا ً أنا حَاوَلتُ أن أتَعلُم
Instructor: English language is as difficult as Arabic
هي: اللغَةُ الإنجليزِيةُ صَعبةٌ مِثلَ اللغَةِ العَربية
Instructor: she says but of course you grew up speaking English
هي: لَكِن بالطَبعِ أنت َ كبُرتُ على التَحدَثِ باللغةِ الإنجليزية
Instructor: for me English is as difficult as Arabic for you
هي: بالنِسبة لي الإنجليزِية صَعبةٌ مثلُ العَربيةِ بالنِسبة لك

Instructor: while you are waiting, she tells you about her family,
how she would tell you that her brother is an engineer.
هي: أخي مُهَندِس
هي: تَقُول
Instructor: he is married to an American woman
هي: هو مُتَزوجٌ من إمرَأةٍ أمريكِية
Instructor: his wife grew up in Miami
هي: زَوجَته كبُرَت في ميامي
Instructor: but now they live in Lattakia
هي: لَكِنهما الآن يَسكُنان في اللاذقية
Instructor: she has lived in Syria for a long time.
هي: هي تَعيشُ في سُوريا لفَترةٍ طَويلة
Instructor: we still waiting, ask the waiter again for the check.
هو: الفاتورة من فَضلِك .. الفاتورة
هو: هي تَقول
Instructor: he is an engineer for a company in Lattakia
هي: هوَ مُهَندِس في شَرِكةٍ في اللاذقية
Instructor: they’ve lived there for a long time.
هي: يَعيشَان هُناكَ لفَترةٍ طَويلة
Instructor: she says, two yeas or three years for now
هي: سنَتَان أو ثلاثُ سنَوات للأن

Instructor: I was in Lattakia last winter
هو: كُنتُ في اللاذقيةِ الشِتاءَ المَاضي
Instructor: it’s a beautiful city
هو: هي مَدينَةٌ جَميلة
Instructor: now you are in a restaurant with another friend,
she suggests to you, how about ordering some sweets
هي: مَا رأيُكَ أن نَطَلبَ بَعض الحَلوى ؟
Instructor: how do you ask the waiter for the menu?
هو: قَائِمةُ الطَعاَمِ من فَضلِك ؟
Instructor: looking at the choices, you say this tea I think
هو: أعتقدُ هَذا الشَاي
هو: هَذا الشَاي
Instructor: ask your acquaintance and you would you like a pot of tea
هو: وأنت هل تُحبينَ إبريقًا من الشَاي ؟
Instructor: she says, yes, I would like this tea
هي: نَعَم أُحب ُ هذا الشاي
Instructor: tell the waiter we will order this tea please
هو: سنَطلُبُ هَذا الشاي مِن فَضلِك
Instructor: later how would you ask him for the check?
هو: الفاتورة من فَضلِك
Instructor: now you are at work but you can’t find some
important papers, here’s how to ask a colleague

هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد

Instructor: you want to say they were on the table, referring to papers.
First "they were"
هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد
هو: كَانوا
هو: كَانوا
Instructor: now on the table
هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد
هو: على المِنضَدة
هو: على المِنضَدة .. ضَدة .. المِنضَدة
هو: على .. على المِنضَدة
هو: قُل
Instructor: on the table

هو: كَيفَ تَقول
Instructor: they were on the table
هو: كَانوا على المِنضَدة
Instructor: how did you ask, have you seen my papers?
هو: هل رَأيتِ أوراقِي ؟
Instructor: how would she say to you, your papers?
هي: أوراقَك ؟
هي: أوراقَك ؟
Instructor: later she finds them and says your papers were on the table
هي: أوراقَك كَانوا على المِنضَدة
هي: أوراقَك كَانوا على المِنضَدة
Instructor: do you remember the word for a book
هو: كِتاب
Instructor: here’s how she says, under a book
هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد
هي: تَحت كِتاب .. تَحت .. تَحت
هي: تَحت كِتاب
Instructor: how would she say, your papers were under a book
هي: أوراقَك كَانوا تَحتَ كِتاب
Instructor: she goes to get them and says here are your papers
هي: تفضل أوراقَك
هي: تفضَل أوراقَك
Instructor: how would she say, your papers were under a book
هي: كَانوا تَحتَ كِتاب
Instructor: she continues:"your papers, they’re in English"
هي: أوراقُكَ باللغَةِ الإنجلِيزية
Instructor: yes, I always write in English language
هو: نَعَم أنا دائما ً أكتُبُ باللغَة الإنجلِيزية
Instructor: I tried to learn Arabic
هو: حَاوَلتُ أن أتَعلُمَ العَربية
Instructor: say that you learned it at a university
هو: تَعلَمتُها في الجَامعِة
Instructor: and an audio program is very good
هو: والبَرنامَج الصَوتيّ جَيد جدا ً
Instructor: but it wasn’t easy.
هي: لَكِن الأمرَ لم يَكُن سَهلا ً
هي: لَكِن الأمرَ لم يَكُن سَهلا ً
Instructor: I really tried
هو: حقا ً أنا حَاوَلت ُ
Instructor: but Arabic is not easy. It’s very difficult
هو: العَربيةُ لَيسَت سَهلة. إنها صَعبَةٌ جدا ً
Instructor: referring to the papers try to ask, where were they?
هو: أين َ كَانوا ؟
هو: أين َ كَانوا ؟
Instructor: have you seen my papers?
هو: هل رَأيتِ أوراقِي ؟ .. أوراقِي
Instructor: she answers your papers were on the table
هي: أوراقُكَ كَانوا على المِنضَدة
Instructor: under a book
هي: تَحتَ كِتاب
هو: قَل
Instructor: my papers were under a book
هو: أوراقِي كَانوا تَحتَ كِتاب
Instructor: now she wants to ask, if this pen is yours.
Here is how to say “yours” or “it’s yours” to a man
هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد
هي: لك
هي: لك
Instructor: literally to you, she asks is it yours this pen
هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد
هي: هل هذا القَلَمُ لك ؟ .. هذا القَلَم .. القَلَم
هي: هل هذا القَلَمُ لك ؟
Instructor: how would she say, this pen
هي: هذا القَلَم
هي: هذا القَلَم
Instructor: here’s how to ask, my pen?
هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد
هو: قَلَمي ؟
هو: قَلَمي ؟
Instructor: here’s how to say, yes it’s mine
هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد
هو: نَعَم , هو قَلَمي
هو: قَلَمي
هو: نَعَم , هو قَلَمي .. شَكرا ً
Instructor: she tells you, your pen is next to your papers.
Here’s how she says next to
هو: ﺇستَمع وأعِد
هي: بِجوار .. بِجوار
Instructor: how would she say “next to?”
هي: بِجوار
Instructor: say together “on the table” “under a book”
هي: على المِنضَدة .. تَحتَ كِتاب
هو: الأن قُل
Instructor: next to
هي: بِجوار
Instructor: how would she say” your pen was next to your papers”
هي: قَلَمُكَ كَان بِجوارِ أوراقِك .. قَلَمَك
Instructor: notice that you used كان because pen is a masculine word.
How do you ask her, did you see my pen?
هو: هل رَأيتِ قَلَمي؟
هو: هل رَأيتِ قَلَمي؟
Instructor: how would she ask you, is it yours this pen?
هي: هل هذا القَلَمُ لك ؟
هي: هل هذا القَلَمُ لك ؟
Instructor: referring to the pen say, yes..yes , its mine thank you
هو: نَعَم .. نَعَم . هو قَلَمي .. شُكرا ً
هو: هو قَلَمي .. شُكرا ً
هو:اسأل
Instructor: where was my pen?
هو: أين َ كَان قَلَمي ؟
Instructor: referring to the pen, she answers, it was on the table
هي: كَان عَلى المِنضَدة
هي: كَان عَلى المِنضَدة
Instructor: next to your papers
هي: بِجوارِ أوراقِك
هي: بِجوارِ أوراقِك
هو:اسأل
Instructor: my papers?
هو: أوراقِي ؟
Instructor: yes and your papers were under a book
هي: نَعَم و أوراقُكَ كَانوا تَحتَ كِتاب .. كَانوا
Instructor: how would she ask, is it yours this book
هي: هل هَذا كِتابُك ؟
Instructor: try to answer yes its mine, thank you
هو: نَعَم هو كِتابي .. شُكرا ً
Instructor: now in a restaurant how do you ask the waiter for the menu?

هي: كَان بِجوارِ أوراقِك

Instructor: he points to one saying this tea is from Morocco
هو: هذا الشَاي من المَغرٍب

Instructor: ask him again, what he recommends?

Instructor: after you have finished, how do you ask
