هو: استَمِع إلىَ هَذِهِ المُحادثَة

Instructor: an American man and his wife are visiting a friend’s new apartment

هو: شَقِتِكِ جَميِلةٌ جِدا ً

هي: شُكرا ً.. توجَد حَديقَةٌ صَغيرةٌ في الخَلف

هو: شَقِتِكِ جَميِلة ... لَكِن أينَ تَقفُ السَيارة ؟.. هَل تَقفُ السَيارةُ أمَامَ شَقتِك؟

هي: نَعَم بالأمَام وليس في الخَلف .. توجَد حَديقَةٌ في الخَلف

هي: هَل تحبُ أن تَشرَبَ شَايًا في الحَديقة ؟

هو: نَعم هَذه فِكرةٌ جَيدة.. شُكرا ً

هو: استَمِع إلى هَذه المحادَثة مرةً أخرى

هو: شَقِتِكِ جَميِلةٌ جِدا ً

هي: شُكرا ً.. توجَد حَديقَةٌ صَغيرةٌ في الخَلف

هو: شَقِتِكِ جَميِلة ... لَكِن أينَ تَقفُ السَيارة ؟.. هَل تَقفُ السَيارةُ أمَامَ شَقتِك؟

هي: نَعَم بالأمَام وليس في الخَلف .. توجَد حَديقَةٌ في الخَلف

هي: هَل تحبُ أن تَشرَبَ شَايًا في الحَديقة ؟

هو: نَعم هَذه فِكرةٌ جَيدة.. شُكرا ً

Instructor: you are an American and married to an Arab woman. You and your wife are visiting her sister in Damascus. Her sister wants to ask you where your car is.

هي: أينَ سيارتُكَ  ؟

Instructor: you try to answer “on the street”

هو :  استمِع واعِد

هو: في الشَارِع

هو: في .. في الشَارِع

Instructor: ask her where she parks? Literally, where does your car stand? 

هو: أينَ تَقفُ سيارتُك ؟

هو: هي تَقول

Instructor: usually my car is in the back

هي: عَادةً سَيارَتي  في الخَلف

Instructor: but today it’s in the front of the street

هي: لَكِن اليَوم هي في الاَمام في الشَارِع

Instructor: tell her your apartment is very pretty.

Pretty is the same as beautiful and nice

هو: شَقِتِكِ جَميِلةٌ جِدا ً

هو: شَقِتِك

هو: هي تَقول

Instructor: thanks, it’s small but nice

هي: شُكرا ً. هي صَغيرةٌ لكِن جَميلة

Instructor: there’s a little garden in the back

 هي: توجَد حَديقَةٌ صَغيرةٌ  في الخَلف 

Instructor: tell her the garden is very pretty

هو: الحَديقَةُ جَميلةٌ جِدا ً 

Instructor: but where do you park

هو: لَكِن أينَ تَقفُ سيارتُك ؟

Instructor: she answers in front of the street

هي: اَمَام  الشَارِع

هي: في الاَمَام ... أمام الشارع

Instructor: usually the car is next to the garden in the back

هي: عادة ً سَيارَتي تكون بِجوارِ الحَديقَةِ في الخَلف

Instructor: she goes to get refreshment, here is how to

say to your wife” her apartment isn’t small”

هو :  استمِع واعِد

هو: شَقِتُها لَيسَت صَغيرة

هو: شَقِتها

هو: شَقِتُها لَيسَت صَغيرة

Instructor: how do you say “her apartment?”

هو: شَقِتُها

Instructor: now you are at your office in Damascus say to

your assistant” I want to talk about this trip to Cairo

هو :  أرِيدُ أن اتَحدثَ عَن هِذِهِ الرِحلَةِ  إلى القَاهِرة

Instructor: ask her do you remember the name of the hotel?

هو : هل تتذكرَينَ اسمَ الفندُق؟ 

هو: تتذكرَين

هو: هي تَقول

Instructor: but I thought you want to go to Homs

هي: أعتَقَدتُ أنَكَ تَريدُ الذَهابَ إلى حِمص

Instructor: tell her I am going to Homs next month 

هو: سَأذهبُ إلى حِمص الشَهرَ القَادِم

Instructor: but I must go to Egypt next week

هو: لَكن لَابُدّ أن أذهَبَ إلى مِصرَ الأسبُوعَ القَادِم

هو: هي تَسأل

Instructor: did you make hotel reservations?

هى : هل حَجزتُ الفندُق ؟

Instructor: she offers I can do it for you today 

هى : أسَتطِيعُ فِعلها مِن أجلِكَ اليَوم

Instructor: tell her my wife is going with me

هو: زَوجَتي سَتذهَبُ مَعي

Instructor: I will make the reservations today 

هو : سَأحجِزُ اليَوم

Instructor: I can pay by credit card

هو : أستطيعُ الدفعَ ببِطاقةِ الائتِمان

Instructor: you say but I can’t remember the name of the hotel in Cairo

هو: لَكني لا اتَذَكرُ اسمَ الفُندُقِ في القَاهِرة

Instructor: she checked your files and says” it’s called Ramses”

هي: اسمُهُ "رَمسيِس"

Instructor: later she offers again I can do it for you today 

هى : أسَتطِيعُ فِعلها مِن أجلِكَ اليَوم

هو: قَل

Instructor: great, my wife is going to Cairo with me

هو: عظيم..زَوجَتي سَتذهَبُ إلي القَاهِرةِ معي

Instructor: she wants to see our daughter but her apartment is small

هو: هي تَريدُ أن ترىَ ابنَتُنا لَكِن شَقتَها صَغيرة

Instructor: she asks and did you buy the plane tickets?

هي: وهَل اشتريتُ تذَاكِرَ الطَائِرة ؟

Instructor: no unfortunately

هو: لا مَع الأسَف

Instructor: this morning, I didn’t have my credit cards with me. Remember it’s literally this morning wasn’t with me the credit cards of mine

هو : هَذا الصَباح لم تكن معِى بطَاقَاتُ الائتمِانِ الخَاصةِ بي

Instructor: she reminds you” you need to buy the plane tickets right away”

هى : لابدّ أن تشتَريَ تذاكِرَ الطائِرةِ حالاً

هو: قُل

Instructor: I can pay for the tickets by credit card

هو : أستَطيعُ دفعَ التَذاكِرِ ببِطاقةِ الائتِمان

Instructor: if they accept the American express card

هو : اذا قبلوا بِطاقةَ ائتِمانِ أميرِكان اكسِبريس

هو: هي تَقول

Instructor: yes you can buy the tickets by phone

هي: نَعَم تستَطيعُ شِراءَ التّذاكِرِ عَن طَريقِ الهاتف

Instructor: or I can make the reservations for you today 

هى : أو أسَتطِيعُ الحَجزُ مِن أجلِكَ اليَوم

Instructor: and I think they accept the American express card

هي: أعتَقِدُ أنهم يَقبَلون بِطاقِةَ ائتِمانِ أميرِكان اكسِبريس

Instructor: later at home your wife says I want to go back to Aleppo.

هي: أريدُ أن أرجِعَ إلي حَلَب

هي: أرجِع

هو:قُل

Instructor: but I thought you want to go to Cairo

هو: أعتَقَدت ُ أنكِ تُريدينَ الذَهابَ إلى القَاهِرة

هو: هي تقَول

Instructor: no I want to see my sister

هي: لا.. اُريدُ أن أرى أُختي

Instructor: her apartment is not far from the old town

هي: شَقتُها لَيسَت بَعيدةً عَن البَلَدِ القَديمة

Instructor: we went to Cairo last month

هي: ذَهبنا إلي القَاهِرةِ الشَهرَ المَاَضي

Instructor: Do you remember the name of the hotel in Aleppo?

هو : هَل  تتَذكَرينَ إسمَ الفُندُقِ في حَلَب؟

Instructor: she answers; yes of course it is called the hotel of "Horreyah"

هي: بالطَبع, الفُندُق اسمُهُ الحريّة

Instructor: tell her, I will make the reservations to Aleppo right away

هو: سَأحجِزُ إلي حَلَب حالًا

Instructor: later your wife says, we are going to Aleppo, right?

هي: سَنذَهبُ إلي حَلَب .. صحيح ؟

Instructor: teasing her to say but I thought you want to go to Italy

هو: لكن... أنا أعتَقَدت ُ أنكِ تُريدينَ الذَهابَ إلى إيطَاليا

Instructor: the next day you tell her you bought the tickets to Aleppo 

هو: اشتَريِتُ التَذَاكرَ إلي حَلَب

Instructor: now do you remember the word for” by walking” or “on foot”

هو: سيرًا على الأقدام

هو: سيرًا على الأقدام

Instructor: try to say how about to go on foot

هو: ما رأيُكِ أن نّذهَبَ سيرًا على الأقدام  ؟

هو:  نّذهَب سيرًا على الأقدام

Instructor: when walking leisurely for pleasure you use a different form, here is how to ask how about we have a walk

هو: استَمِع و أعِد

هو: ما رأيُكِ أن نسيرَ على الأقدام ؟

 هو: نَسير على الأقدام

Instructor: ask her do you have time to have a walk, literally do you have the time we have a walk

هو: هَل لَديكِ الوَقتُ لنسيرَ على الأقدام ؟

هو: هَل لَديكِ الوَقتُ لنسيرَ على الأقدام؟

هو: هي تَقُول

Instructor: I thought you want to buy tickets to the cinema

هي: اعتَقَدتُ أنكَ تُريدُ شِراءَ التَذاكِرِ لدارِ الخيّالة

هو: نَعَم مازِلتُ أريدُ شِراءَ التَذاكِر

Instructor: here is the word for “buy them” referring to the tickets 

هو: استَمِع و أعِد

هو:  أشتِريَهُم .. هُم

هو: أشتِري

هو:  أشتِريَهُم

هو: قُل

Instructor: yes I still want to buy them

هو: نَعَم مازِلتُ أريدُ أن أشتِريَهُم

هو:  أشتِريَهُم

Instructor: I didn’t buy the tickets yesterday 

هو: لَم أشتَرِ التَذاكِرَ البارحة

Instructor: I didn’t have my credit card with me

هو :  لم تكن بطَاقَاتُ الائتمِانِ الخَاصةِ بي معي

هو: قُل

Instructor: but I still want to buy them

هو: لَكِن مازِلتُ أريدُ أن أشتِريَهُم

هو:  أشتِريَهُم

هو: اسأل 

Instructor: how about we have a walk?

هو: ما رأيُكِ أن نَسيرَ على الأقدام ؟

Instructor: and I can buy the tickets

هو: وأستَطيعُ أن أشتَريَ التَذاكِر

Instructor: today I can pay for the tickets by the credit card

هو : اليوم أستَطيعُ دفعَ التَذاكِرِ ببِطاقةِ الائتِمان

Instructor: Do they accept the American express card?

هو: هَل يَقبَلون بِطاقَةَ أمِريكان أكسبريس ؟ 

Instructor: your wife says yes I think so

هى : نَعم أعتقدُ ذلِك

هو: قَل

Instructor: in that case I can pay for the tickets

هو: اذَنْ أستَطِيعُ أن أدفَعَ التذَاكِر

Instructor: referring to the tickets say “I still want to buy them”

هو: مازِلتُ أريدُ أن أشتِريَهُم

Instructor: say to her if you still want to go to the cinema

هو: اذا مازلتِ تُريدينَ الذُهابَ إلى دارِ الخيالة

Instructor: and now how about we have a walk?

هو: والأن ما رأيُكِ أن نسيرَ على الأقدام ؟

Instructor: your wife agrees says, alright you can buy the tickets

هي: حَسنا ً تستَطَيعُ أن تَشتَريَ التَذاكِر

Instructor: and then we can go

هي: ثم نستَطَيعُ الذَهاب

Instructor: to a public park

هو: استَمِع وأعِد

هي: إلى الحَديقَةِ العَامَة

هي: عَامَة

هي: العَامَة

هي: حَديقَة

هي: إلى الحَديقَة

هي: إلى الحَديقَةِ العَامَة

Instructor: and then we can go to a public park

هي: ثم نستَطَيعُ أن نَذهَبَ  إلى الحَديقَةِ العَامَة

هو: اسأل

Instructor: is it far?

هو: هل هي بَعيدة ؟

هو: هَل الحَديقَةُ العَامَةُ بَعيدة ؟

Instructor: no the public park is 5 minutes from here.

هي: لا الحَديقَةُ العَامَةُ علي بَعدِ خمسِ  دقائِقٍ من هُنا

هو: الأن هي تقٌول

Instructor: here is the map

هي: هَذه هيَ الخَريطَة

هي: خَريطَة

Instructor: you realize that you should find your glasses; here is how to say” my glasses”

هو: نَظّارَتي .. رَتي 

هو: نَظّارَتي

Instructor: say that you are looking for your glasses

هو: أنا أبحَثُ عن نَظارَتي

Instructor: referring to your glasses say I thought that they were on the table.

هو: أعتَقدتُ أنَها كانت على المِنضَدة

Instructor: ask your wife, have you seen my glasses?

هو : هل رأيتِ نَظارَتي ؟

هو: كيف تَقول

Instructor: they were on the table?

هو: كَانت على المِنضَدة

Instructor: now it’s another day and your colleague is telling you about a trip, she says last week I went to Aleppo 

هي: الاسبُوعَ المَاضي ذهبتُ إلى حلب

Instructor: my sister lives there

هي: أُختي تَعيشُ هُناك

Instructor: her apartment in Aleppo is very small

هي: شَقتُها في حَلَب صَغيرةٌ جِدا ً

Instructor: here is how she says” my sister’s place”

هو: استَمِع وأعِد

هي: بَيتُ أُختِي

هي: بَيتُ 

هي: بَيتُ أُختِي

Instructor: note that while the word for apartment is feminine 

هو: شقة

Instructor: the word for place or a house of is a masculine word. Try to say my sister’s place is big

هي: بَيتُ أُختِي كَبير

هي: كَبير

Instructor: she says at her apartment there is a pretty garden in the back 

هي: توجَد في شَقتِها حَديقةٌ جميلة في الخَلف 

هو: قَل هَل تَحبُ الذَهابَ إلى حَلَب ؟

هو: أُحبُ أن أذهَبَ إلى حَلَب

Instructor: how does she say that it is a pretty city?

هي: هي مدينةٌ جَميلَة

هو: هي تَقُول أنَها تُريدُ الرجوعَ الى حَلَب سَريعا ً

هي: أُريدُ أن أرجعَ إلى حَلَب سَريعا ً

Instructor: at her apartment there is a pretty garden in the back

 هي: توجَد  في شَقتِها حَديقَةٌ جَميلةٌ في الخَلف 

Instructor: you want to see her pictures, how would you say I’m looking for my glasses

هو: أنا أبحَثُ عن نَظارَتي

Instructor: now one morning your wife suggests visiting a museum, here is a museum

هو: استَمِع وأعِد

هي: مُتحَف    (ملحوظة للراوية كلمة متحف تنطق بضم الميم و فتح الحاء)

هي: المُتحَف

هي: مُتحَف

Instructor: she suggests we can go to the museum now

هي: نَستَطِيعُ أن نَذهَبَ الى الَمُتحَفِ الأن

Instructor: and we can go to the cinema later

هي: و نَستَطِيعُ أن نَذهَبَ إلى دارِ الخيّالةِ فيما بعد.

Instructor: referring to the cinema tickets say I didn’t buy the tickets yesterday

هو: لَم أشتَرِ تَذاكِرَ دارِ الخيّالةِ البارحة 

هو: قُل

Instructor: but I still want to buy them

هو: مازِلتُ أريدُ أن أشتِريَهُم

Instructor: your wife says we need to go to the museum first

هي: يَجِب أن نَذهَبَ الى المُتحَفِ أولا ً

Instructor: and then we have a walk

هى: ثم نَسيرُ على الأقدام

Instructor: to the public park next to the museum

هى: إلى الحَديقَةِ العَامَةِ بِجوارِ المُتحَف

هو: هى تَقُول

Instructor: to go to museum literally in order to go to museum 

هى: لِكَي نَذَهبَ الى المُتحَف

هى: لِكَي نَذَهبَ الى الَمُتحَف

Instructor: how about we take the bus?

هى: مَا رأيُكَ أن نَذهَبَ بالحافلة ؟

Instructor: later tell your wife I didn’t buy the plane tickets today

هو: لَم أشتَرِ تَذاكِرَ الطَائِرةِ اليَوم

Instructor: how do you ask her if she remembers the name of the hotel?

هو : هَل  تتَذكَرينَ إسمَ الفُندُق؟

Instructor: and how does she say yes of course I remember

هي: نَعَم بالطَبعِ أتَذكَر

Instructor: referring to the hotel say it was next to a museum

هو: كَان بِجوارِ مُتحَف

Instructor: tell her I will make the reservations right away

هو: سأحجِزُ حَالا ً

Instructor: this morning I had the credit cards with me

هو: هذا الصباح كَانَت بِطاقَاتُ الائتِمانِ الخَاصةِ بي معي 

Instructor: but I didn’t have the time to call

هو: لَكِن لَم يَكُن لَديَ الوَقتُ لأتصل

هو: هي تَقُول

Instructor: wait may be we don’t need a hotel

هي: انتَظِر ... ربما لا نحتاجُ إلى فُندُق

هو: اسأل

Instructor: but why

هو: لَكِن لِماذا؟

Instructor: I thought you want to go to Lattakia

هو: أعتَقَدتُ أنكِ تُريدينَ أن تَذهَبي إلى اللاذقية

هو: هي تَقُول

Instructor: yes I still want to go to Lattakia

هي: نَعَم مَازِلتُ أُريدُ الذَهابَ إلي اللاذقية

Instructor: but the trip is very expensive

هي: لَكِن الرِحلَةَ غَالية ٌ جدا ً

هي: الرِحلَةُ غَالية  

Instructor: my sister’s place

هي: بَيتُ أختي

Instructor: keep in mind that “place” is masculine, how would she say my sister’s place is very nice?

هي: بَيتُ أختي جَميلٌ جِدا ً

هي: جَميل

Instructor: her apartment is very big

هي: وشَقَتُها كَبيرةٌ جِدا ً

Instructor: there is a pretty garden in the back

هي: توجَد حَديقَةٌ جَميلةٌ في الخَلف 

Instructor: and my sister’s place is not far from a good museum

هي: وبَيتُ أُختي لَيسَ بَعيدا ً عن مُتحَفٍ جَيد

Instructor: and a big public park

هى: وحَديقَةٍ عَامَةٍ كَبيرة

Instructor: say that you prefer to stay at a hotel

هو: أُفضِلُ أن نمكثَ في الفُندُق

Instructor: your wife says again” my sister’s place is very nice”

هي: بَيتُ أختي جَميلٌ جِدا ً

هي: جَميل

هو: قُل

Instructor: I know but I will make the reservations today

هو: أعرِف ذَلِك ... لَكِني سَأحجِزُ اليوم

هو: هي تَقول

Instructor: you need to make them soon

هي: لابُدّ أن تَحجِزَهُم قَريبا ً

Instructor: ask her again if she remembers the name of the hotel

هو : هَل  تتَذكَرينَ إسمَ الفُندُق؟

Instructor: the check arrives and you need your glasses to read it, ask her have you seen my glasses

هو : هل رأيتِ نَظارَتي ؟

هو: كَيفَ تَقُول

Instructor: they were on the table

هو: كَانت على المِنضَدة

Instructor: a minute later a waiter arrives holding a pair of glasses, you say ah my glasses

هو: أه .. نَظارَتي

Instructor: he says they were on the table 

هو: كَانت على المِنضَدة 

Instructor: how do you thank the waiter?

هو: شُكرا ً أخي

Instructor: it’s not late and it’s a beautiful night outside. You suggest:" how about we have a walk to the public park?"

هو: مَا رأيُكِ أن نسيرَ على الأقدامِ إلى الحَديقَةِ العَامَة

هي: هَذهِ فِكرَة ٌجَيدة
