Instructor: This is unit 47 of ALIF Classical Arabic Audio program 2

Instructor: An American woman in an Arab country is talking to a colleague about his upcoming trip, you hear

هُو: هَل أولادُكَ  مُسافرِونَ مَعَكَ ؟

Instructor: and your children are travelling with you?

هُو: إستَمٍع إلَى هَذِه المُحادَثة

هِى: أنتَ مُسافِرٌ إلى إنجِلترا يَومَ الجُمعَةِ القَادِم.... حَقا ً  ؟

هُو: نَعَم أنا وَ زَوجِي سَنذهَبُ إلى لَندَن

هِي: جَميلٌ جِدا ً ... و هَل أولادُكُما مُسافرِونَ مَعَكُما ؟

هُو: لَا ...لَيسوا مُسافرِين. إبنَتُنا لاتستطيعُ أن تَذَهبَ مَعنا وإبنُنا لا يُريد

هِي: لا يُريد ! لِكن لِمَاذا ؟

هُو : هُو ورِفاقُه مُسافِرون إلى اللاذِقية

Instructor: in the conversation you also heard

هُو: مَعَنا

Instructor: with us

هُو: إستَمع مَرة أُخرى

هِى: أنتَ مُسافِرٌ إلى إنجِلترا يَومَ الجُمعَةِ القَادِم.... حَقا ً  ؟

هُو: نَعَم أنا وَ زَوجِي سَنذهَبُ إلى لَندَن

هِي: جَميلٌ جِدا ً ... و هَل أولادُكُما مُسافرِونَ مَعَكُما ؟

هُو: لَا ...لَيسوا مُسافرِين. إبنَتُنا لاتستطيعُ أن تَذَهبَ مَعنا وإبنُنا لا يُريد

هِي: لا يُريد ! لِكن لِمَاذا ؟

هُو : هُو ورِفاقُه مُسافِرون إلى الأسكندرية

Instructor: now you are at work but you’re leaving to go for a walk, how do you say for a female colleague, how about we go to the revolution "Athaw'rah" cafe?

هُو: مَا رأيُكِ أن نَذهَبَ إلى مَقهَى الثورة؟

Instructor: tell her that you want to eat an ice cream

هُو : أُرِيدُ أن أكُلَ البُوظَة

هُو: قُل

Instructor: the weather is very nice today

هُو: الطَقسُ جميلٌ اليَوم

Instructor: she agrees saying it’s not hot

هِي: لَيس حَاراً

Instructor: ask her would you like to go to Athaw'rah café with me?

هُو: هَل تحبينَ أن تَذهّبي إلى مَقهَى الثورة معي ؟

Instructor: The ice cream is very good…. ice cream is feminine

هُو: البُوظَة جيدة جِدا ً

Instructor: but before it was less expensive

هُو: لَكِن مِن قَبل كَانِت أرخص  

هَو: أرخص

Instructor: it’s more expensive now

هُو: هِي أغلى كثيرا ًالآن

Instructor: sometimes I go to there with my friends

هُو: أحياَنا ً أذهَبُ إلى هُناك مَع رِفاقِي

Instructor: she says the weather is hot today

هِي: الطَقسُ حَارٌ اليَوم

Instructor: I want to eat an ice cream too

هِي: أُرِيدُ أن أكُل البُوظَة أيضا ً

Instructor: later tell her I’m going to Canada in January

هُو: سَأذهَبُ إلى كَنَدا فِى شَهر يَناير

هُو: قُل

Instructor: before, the trip to Canada was less expensive

هُو: مِن قَبل،  الرِحِلَة إلى كَنَدا كانت أرخص  

Instructor: it’s very expensive now

هُو:  إنها غالية جدا ً الآن

هُو: الأن قُل

Instructor: now it’s more expensive

هُو: الأن ، هي أغلى كثيراً  

Instructor: how does she say that there are many things to see there?

هِي: توجَد أشياء كَثيرَة لتَراهَا هُناك

Instructor: I like to travel but now it’s more expensive

هِي : أُحبُ السَفَر لَكِن الأن هي أغلى كثيرا ً

Instructor: how does she ask you when you’re travelling to Canada?

هِي: مَتى سَتسَافِرُ إلى كَنَدا ؟

Instructor: tell her in January or in February

هُو: فِي يَناير أو فِي فِبراير

Instructor: now she says in January the weather is not very nice

هِي: فِي يَناير الطَقْسُ لا يَكوُن لطيفاً

Instructor: here’s how to say that the weather is bad

هُو: الطَقسُ سَئ

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: الطَقسُ سَئ

هُو : سَئ

هَو:  الطَقسُ سَئ

هُو: كِيفَ تَقُول بالعَربِية

Instructor: bad, referring to the weather

هُو : سَئ

هُو: كَيفَ تَقُول : الطَقسُ سَئ

هُو: الطَقسُ سَئ

هُو: قُل

Instructor: I don’t like to travel in a bad weather

هُو: لا أُحبُ السَفر فِي الطَقْسِ السِئ

Instructor: to travel is very expensive too

هُو: السَفَر غَالى جداً  أيضا ً

Instructor: the weather is bad sometimes in January

هُو: الطَقسُ سَئ أحيانا ً في يَناير

هُو: الأن قُل

Instructor: but next week I’m going on vacation

هُو: لَكِن الأسبُوعَ القَادِم سأذهَبُ في عُطلَة

Instructor: how would she ask you, are you travelling to England?

هِي: هَل سَتذَهبُ إلى إنجِلترا ؟

هُو: أجِب

Instructor: yes, I’m going to London

هُو: نَعَم سَأذهَبُ إلى لَندَن

Instructor: next Friday with my wife

هُو: الجُمُعَةَ القَادِمة مَع زَوجِي

Instructor: sometimes the weather is bad

هُو: أحيَانا ً الطَقسُ سَئ

Instructor: but England is very beautiful

هُو: لَكِن إنجِلترا جَميلَة جِدا ً

هُو: جَميلَة

Instructor: how do you say, his children

هِي: أولادُه

Instructor: now say his three children

هُو: أولاَدهُ الثلاثة

Instructor: she wants to know if their children are going with you, here’s how to say your children to a man

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: أولادُكَ.. أولادُكَ .. أولادُكَ

Instructor: they’re travelling  

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: هم مُسافرون .. رُون .. مُسافرُون

Instructor: she asks, are your children travelling to London with you

هِي: هَل أولادُكَ  مُسافرون إلى لَندَن مَعَكَ ؟

Instructor: here’s how to ask with us?

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: مَعَنا ؟ .. نَا

Instructor: you use the same ending  " na" to say our children, try to say it

هُو: أولادُنا.. نَا.. أولادُنا

هُو: قُل

Instructor: our children

هُو: أولادُنا..

Instructor: no, our children don't travel with us

هُو: لا ... أولادُنا لا يُسافرُون مَعنَا

Instructor: you tell her about a male friend of yours, say his three children

هُو: أولادُهُ الثلاثَة

Instructor: here’s how to say, this week my friend is travelling

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: هَذا الاسبُوع صَديقي مسافرٌ .. مسافرٌ

Instructor: to Italy with his three children

هُو : إلى إيطَاليا مَع أولادِهِ الثَلاثَة

Instructor: my friend and his wife

هُو: صَديقي و زَوجُه

Instructor: and their children are travelling together

هُو: وأولادُهما يسافِرون مَعا ً

Instructor: your colleague says, but your children aren’t travelling with you

هُو: لَكِن أولادَكَ لا يُسافرونَ مَعَكَ

Instructor: she asks how the weather in Italy is.

هِي: كَيفَ الطَقسُ في إيطَاليا ؟

Instructor: she says I don’t like to travel in bad weather

هِي: لا أُحبُ أن أسافرَ فِي الطَقسِ السئ

Instructor: tell her; usually the weather is very nice in Italy

هُو: عَادَةً الطَقسُ لطيفٌ جداً في إِيطَاليا

Instructor: she says to you, but your children aren’t travelling to London with you

هِي: لَكِن أولادَكَ لا يُسافرون إلى لندن مَعَكَ

Instructor: try to say we’re travelling

هُو: نحن مُسافِرون

هُو: نَحنُ مُسافِرون

هُو: مُسافِرون

هُو: قًل

Instructor: no my wife and I are traveling, remember it’s I and my wife

هُو: لا ..أنا وزَوجِي مُسافِران .. مُسافِران

Instructor: without our children

هُو: بِدون أولاُد ِنا

Instructor: referring to your friend and his wife say, they’re travelling with their children

هُو: هما مُسافِرانِ مَع أولادِهِما

Instructor: but our children aren’t travelling with us

هُو: لَكِن أولادَنا لا يُسافرون مَعَنا

Instructor: your colleague says;" too bad"

هِي: يا للأسَف....يا خسارة

Instructor: England is very beautiful at the moment

هِي: إنجلترا جَميلَة جدا ً الأن

Instructor: you tell her our daughter has too much work

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: إبنَتُنا عندها عَملٌ كَثير.. عندها

هُو: إبنَتُنا عندها عَملٌ كَثير

Instructor: and our son prefers to stay

هُو: وإبنُنا يُفضِلُ أن يَمكث َ

Instructor: at home with his friends

هُو: مَع أصدقِائُهِ فِي المَنزِل .. أصدقِائُه

Instructor: his friends are coming from Beirut this week

هُو: أصدقِائُهِ قَادِمون مِن بَيروت هَذا الأُسبُوع.. مِن بَيروت

Instructor: They will stay in Alexandria

هُو: سَيمكثون في .. الأسكندرية

Instructor: until next Friday

هُو: حتى يَومِ الجُمَعةِ القاَدِم

Instructor: our daughter is not coming with us

هُو: إبنتُنا ليست آتيةً مَعنا

Instructor: she has too much work

هُو: عندها عَملٌ كَثير.. عندها

هُو: قُل

Instructor: and she wants to see her friends too

هُو: وتُريدُ أن تَرى أصدِقائَها أيضا ً.. تُريدُ أن تَرى

Instructor: she has too much work

هُو: عندها عَملٌ كَثير..

Instructor: your colleague says:"too bad"

هِي: يا للأسَف.....يا خسارة

Instructor: your children aren’t travelling with you

هِي: أولادُكَ لا يُسافرونَ  مَعَكَ

Instructor: England is very beautiful at the moment

هِي: إنجلترا جَميلَة جدا ً الأن

Instructor: there are too many things to see there?

هِي: توجَد أشياء كَثيرَة  لتَراهَا هُناك

Instructor: our children will stay here

هُو: أولادُنا سَيمكثون هُنا

Instructor: they will not travel with us

هُو: لن يُسافروا مَعَنا

Instructor: here’s how she asks, how old is your son

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: كَم عُمرُ إبنِكَ ؟ .. عُمر

هِي: كَم عُمرُ إبنِكَ ؟

Instructor: literally, how much age she asks you, how old is your son?

هِي: كَم عُمرُ إبنِكَ ؟

Instructor: you want to tell her he is 21 years old, first here’s the word for “year”

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: سَنة.. سَنة

Instructor: now here’s: "he’s 21 years old"

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: عُمرُه ُ واحدُ و عشرونَ سَنة.. عُمرُه .. عُمرُه

هُو: عُمرُه ُ واحدُ و عشرونَ سَنة

Instructor: again… he’s 21 years old

هُو: عُمرُه ُ واحدُ و عشرونَ سَنة

Instructor: now she asks and your daughter?

هِي: و إبنَتُك؟

Instructor: how old is your daughter?

هِي: كَم عُمرُ إبنَتِكَ ؟

هِي: كَم عُمرُ إبنَتِكَ ؟

Instructor: how do you say 19 years?

هُو: تسعة عشر  سَنة

هُو: تسعة عشر  سَنة

Instructor: now try to tell her, she is 19 years old

هُو: عُمرُها تسعةُ عشرَ سَنة.. ...عمرُها

هُو: عُمرُها  تسعةُ عشرَ سَنة

Instructor: referring to your son, say he’s 21 years old

هُو: عُمرُه ُ واحدُ و عشرونَ سَنة

هُو: الأن قُل

Instructor: our children will stay here at home

هُو: أولادُنا سَيمكثونَ هُنا في المنزِل

Instructor: remind her the trip to England is expensive

هُو: الرِحلَةُ إلى إنجِلترا غَالية

Instructor: before it was cheaper

هُو: مِن قَبلُ كَانَت أرخص.. كَانَت أرخص

Instructor: but before I had too much work

هُو: لَكِن ....مِن قَبل ....كَانَ عندى عَملٌ كَثير.. كَانَ عندى

Instructor: she says I like to travel but now it’s more expensive

هِي: أنا أُحبُ السَفَرَ... لَكِن... الأن هو أغلى كثيراً

Instructor: here’s how she says I can’t travel now

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: لا أستطيعُ أن أُسافِرَ الآن.. أُسافِر

هِي: لا أستطيعُ أن أُسافِرَ الآن

Instructor: how does she say, I don’t have a car

هِي: لَيس عندى سَياَرة

هِي: لَيس عندى سَياَرة

Instructor: before I used to have a car

هِي: مِن قَبل ...كَان عندى سيَارة.. كَان عندى سيَارة

Instructor: she says my son wants a car

هِي: إبني يُريدُ سَيارة

Instructor: ask her how old is your son?

هُو: كَم عُمرُ إبنِكِ ؟

هُو: كَم عُمرُ ابنِكِ  ؟

Instructor: she answers, he is 25 years old

هِي: عُمرُه خمسٌ و عشرون  سَنة.. عُمرُه

Instructor: she says I have two girls too

هِي: عندي إبنَتَان أيضا ً

Instructor: how does she say 18 as in 18 years

هِي: ثمانية عشر

Instructor: she says the older one she is 18 years old

هِي: الكُبرى .. عَمرُها ثمانيةُ عشرَ سَنة

Instructor: and the younger one she is 12 years old

هِي: والصُغرَى عُمرُها اثنتا عشرةَ سَنة..

Instructor: speaking as a man tell her, next week my friend will travel

هُو: الأسبُوعُ القَادِم صَديقي سَيسافِر

Instructor: to Italy with his children

هُو: إلى إيطَاليا مَع أولادِهِ

Instructor: referring to a boy, try to say the older one he is 12 years old

هُو: الأكبر... عُمرُهُ اثنتا عشرةَ  سَنة .. الأكبر

Instructor: she says he will travel to Italy with his three children

هِي: سَيسافِرُ إلى إيطَاليا مَع أولادِهِ الثَلاثَة

Instructor: how is the weather in Italy Now?

هِي: كِيف الطَقسُ في إيطَاليا الأن .. كِيف الطَقسُ؟

Instructor: sometimes the weather is bad

هُو: أحيانا ً الطَقس سَئ

هُو: قُل

Instructor: but usually the weather is very nice in Italy

هُو: لَكِن عَادَة ً ... الطَقسُ لطيفٌ في إيطَاليا

Instructor: now you are an American woman talking to an Arab man at a business conference, here’s how he tells you I work here in Damascus for Al-shrouq Company

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: أعمَل هُنا في دمشق في  شَرِكة الشروق.. ..الشروق .. في  شَرِكة الشروق

.. أعمَل هُو: أعمَل

هُو: أعمَل هُنا في دمشق في  شَرِكة الشروق

هُو: الشروق

Instructor: is his company’s name, now try to tell her that you work for 9-4

هُو : أنا أعملُ من الساعة التاسعةِ صباحاً  إلى الرابعةِ مساءاً

هو: أنا أعمَلُ من الساعة التاسعةِ صباحاً  إلى الرابعةِ مساءاً

هو: التاسعةُ صباحا ً .....الرابعةُ مساءاً

Instructor: he asks how the weather is now

هُو: كِيفَ الطَقسُ الأن ؟

Instructor: tell him that the weather is bad

هِي: الطَقسُ سَئ .. سَئ

Instructor: someone you know comes over during introductions, how does your new acquaintance tell him I work here for Al-shrouq Company in Damascus?

هُو: أنا أعمَلُ هنا في شَرِكة الشروق في دمشق

Instructor: how does he ask if you are an American?

هُو: هَل أنتِ أمِريكِية؟

هُو: هَل أنتِ أمِريكِية؟

هُو: أجِب

Instructor: yes, I’m American

هُو: نَعَم ..أنا أمِريكِية

Instructor: he says my son lives in New York

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: إبني يَعيشُ في نِيو يُورك.. في نِيو يُورك

Instructor: ask him, how old is your son?

هِي: كَم عُمرُ إبنِكَ ؟

هِي: كَم عُمر إبنِكَ ؟

Instructor: he answers he is 35 years old

هُو: عُمرُه خمسةٌ و ثلاثون سَنة

Instructor: he lives there with his three children and his wife

هُو: هو يسكن هُناكَ مع أولادِهِ الثلاثة و زَوجَتِه

Instructor: my daughter is going to New York next week

هُو: إبنَتي سَتذهَبُ إلى نِيو يوُرك الاسبُوعَ القَادِم

هُو: قُل

Instructor: before it was less expensive

هِي: مِن قَبلُ كَانِت أرخص

Instructor: he adds but now it’s more expensive

هُو: لَكِن الأن هي أغلى كثيرا ً

Instructor: how did he say that he work for Al-shrouq Company?

هُو: أعمَلُ في شَرِكةِ  الشروق

Instructor: and how did you tell him that you work for 9-4

هِي: أنا أعمَلُ من الساعة التاسعة صباحاً إلى الرابعة مساءً

هِي: من الساعة التاسعة صباحاً إلى الرابعة مساءً

Instructor: ask him how old is his daughter?

هِي: كَم عُمرُ إبنَتِكَ ؟

هِي: كَم عُمرُ إبنَتِكَ ؟

Instructor:  he says she is 24

هُو: عُمرُها أربعةٌ و عشرون سنة

Instructor: he says my daughter she is 24 years old

هُو: عُمرُها أربعةٌ و عشرون سنة.

Instructor: the trip to New York is very expensive now

هُو: الرِحلَة إلى نِيو يُورك غَالية جدا ً الأن

Instructor: before it was less expensive

هُو: مِن قَبل كَانِت أرخص

Instructor: he asks how the weather in New York is now.

هُو: كَيفَ الطَقسُ في نِيو يُورك الأن؟

Instructor: tell him the weather is nice at the moment

هِي: الطَقسُ لطيفٌ الأن

هُو: قُل

Instructor: the weather is often bad in February

هِي: الطَقسُ عادَة ً سئ في فبراير

Instructor: he says she will travel to New York next Friday

هُو: ستُسافِرُ إلى نِيو يُورك الجُمعَةِ القَادِمة

Instructor: tell him again but I think the weather is nice in New York now

هِي: لَكِن... أعتَقدُ أن الطَقسَ لطيفٌ في نِيو يُورك الأن

هَو: إسأل

Instructor: and how many days will she stay

هِي: كَم يَوماً سَتمكثُ هَناكَ ؟ .. سَتَمكث

Instructor: how would he answer, she will stay in New York three weeks

هُو: سَتَمكثُ في نِيو يُورك ثَلاثة أسابيع

Instructor: This is the end of unit 47 and the end of today’s lesson
