Instructor: This is unit 48 of ALIF Classical Arabic Audio program 2

هُو: إستَمِع إلَى هَذِه المُحادَثة

Instructor: you hear

هُو: الجَامِعَة الأمرِيكِية

Instructor: the American university…. and

هُو: أينَ تَعمَليِن؟

Instructor: where do you work? ….for a female

هُو: إستَمٍع

هُو: نادية.. أينَ تَعمَليِن؟

هِي: أعمَلُ في الجَامِعَةِ الأمرِيكِيةِ في بَيروُت

هُو: حَقا ً.. أنا أُحبُ بَيرُوتَ كَثيرا َ

هِي: أنا أيضا ً..هي مدينةٌ رائعَة

Instructor: you just heard

هُو: مدينةٌ رائعَة

Instructor: a magnificent city

هُو: إستَمِع مَرة أُخرى

هُو: نادِيَة.. أينَ تَعمَليِن؟

هِي: أعمَلُ في الجَامِعَةِ الأمرِيكِيةِ في بَيروُت

هُو: حَقا ً.. أنا أُحبُ بَيرُوتَ كَثيرا َ

هِي: أنا أيضا ً..هي مدينةٌ رائعَة

Instructor: now you are an American woman attending a conference in Damascus, you are speaking with a Syrian acquaintance. He asks “how is the weather in New York”

هُو: كَيف َ الطَقسُ في نِيو يُورك؟

Instructor: it’s January so tell her that the weather is bad now

هِي: الطَقسُ سَئ الأن.. سَئ

Instructor: referring to a man say this week my friend is travelling to New York

هُو: هَذا الإسبُوع صَديقي سَيُسافِرُ إلى نِيو يُورك

Instructor: now ask him are your children here with you?

هِي: هَل أولادُكَ مَعكَ هُنا؟

Instructor: he answers no we will travel without our children

هُو: لا سَنُسافِرُ بِدوُنِ أولادِنا

Instructor: travel is very expensive now

هُو: السَفَر غَالى جدا ً الأن

Instructor: before the trip was less expensive

هُو: مِن قَبل الرِحلَةُ كانِتِ أرخَص

Instructor: but it’s more expensive now

هُو: لَكِن الأن هِي أغلَى

Instructor: he asks about a female colleague of yours, say she is coming tomorrow

هِي: سَتأتي غَدا ً

Instructor: her husband isn’t coming

هِي: زَوجُها لَن يَأتي

Instructor: he will stay at home with their children

هِي: سَيمكثُ مَع أولادِهِما في المَنزِل

هُو: كَيفَ تَقُول

Instructor: with his three children

هِي: مَع أولادِهِ الثَلاَثَة

Instructor: your acquaintance says the trip to Damascus is very expensive

هُو: الرِحلَةُ إلى دمشقٍ غَالِيَةٌ جدا ً

Instructor: our children will not travel with us

هُو: أولادُنا لَن يُسافِروا مَعنا

Instructor: before the trip was less expensive

هُو: مِن قَبل الرِحلَة كانِت أرخَص

Instructor: but now it’s much more expensive

هُو: لَكِن الأن هِي أغلَى كَثيرا ً

Instructor: do you remember how he would say”there are five persons in my family”

هُو: يُوجَد خَمسة أشخَاص في عَائِلتَي

Instructor: now he says the trip is expensive

هُو: الرِحلَةُ غَالِية

Instructor: for five persons

هُو: لِخَمسةِ أشخَاص

Instructor: ask him where he lives now

هِي: أين تَعيشُ الأن؟

Instructor: he answers I still live in Lattakia

هُو: مَازِلتُ أعِيشُ في اللاذِقية

Instructor: and I still have much work

هُو: و مَازَال عندى عَمَلٌ كَثير

Instructor: how would he say but now I work for 9-4

هُو: لَكِن الأن أنا أعمَلُ من التاسعةِ صباحاً إلى الرابعةِ مساءً

Instructor: he asks and you” where do you work now?”

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: وأنتِ .. أين تَعمَلينَ الأن؟ .. تَعمَلين

هُو: أين تَعمَلينَ الأن؟

Instructor: how does he ask you” where do you work now?”

هُو: أين تَعمَلينَ الأن؟

Instructor: tell him I work for the American university

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: أعمَلُ في الجَامِعَةِ الأمرِيكِية .. الجَامِعَةِ .. الجَامِعَةِ الأمرِيكِية

Instructor: what’s the word for a university?

هِي: جَامِعَة.. الجَامِعَة

Instructor: how did he ask you where you are working now?

هُو: أينَ تَعمَلينَ الأن؟

Instructor: tell him you work for the American university in Beirut

هِي: أعمَلُ في الجَامِعَةِ الأمرِيكِيةِ في بَيرُوت

Instructor: try to ask him” where he is working now”

هِي: أين تَعمَلُ الأن ؟ .. تَعمَل .. أين تَعمَلُ الأن ؟  

Instructor: he says I worked or I used to work

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: كُنت ُأعَمَل .. كُنت ُأعَمَل

Instructor: how does he say” before I worked for Al-shrouq Company”

هُو: مِن قَبل كُنت ُ أعَمَل في شَرِكَةِ الشروق

Instructor:  it wasn’t interesting

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: لَم يكُن مُمتِعا ً.. مُمتِعا ً

Instructor:  referring to work which is masculine say “that was or it was”

هُو: كَان .. كَان

Instructor: and how do you say interesting

هُو: مُمتِعا ً

Instructor: now try to say it wasn’t very interesting

هُو: لَم يكُن مُمتِعا ً جدا ً

Instructor: do you remember the word "when"

هِي: عندما......عندما

Instructor: how would he say”when I worked for Al-shrouq Company”

هُو: عندما كُنت ُ أعمَلُ في شَرِكَة الشروق

هُو: عندما كُنت ُ أعمَلُ في شَرِكَة الشروق

Instructor: ask him "are you working for Al-shrouq Company now?"

هِي: هَل أنتَ  تَعمَل في شَرِكَة ِ الشروق الأن ؟

Instructor: here is how he says my work or my job

هُو: عَمَلي

هُو: عَمَلي

Instructor: he says before my job wasn’t very interesting

هُو: مِن قَبل عَمَلي لَم يكُن مُمتِعا ً جدا ً

Instructor: when I worked for Al-shrouq Company, remember to use "when"

هُو: عندما كُنت ُ أعمَلُ في شَرِكَةِ الشروق

Instructor: but where are you working now?

هِي: لَكِن أين َ تَعمَلُ الان ؟

Instructor: he says I’m working for 9-4 now

هُو: أعمَلُ من التاسعة صباحاً إلى الرابعة ِ مساءً  الأن

Instructor: now it’s very interesting

هُو: الأن هُو مُمتِع جِدا ً

هُو: الأن هُو مُمتِع جِدا ً

Instructor: he says I like my job a lot now

هُو: أحبُ عَمَلي كَثيرا ً الأن

Instructor: it’s too bad

هِي: يا للأسَف....يا خسارة

Instructor: your children aren’t travelling with you

هِي: أولادُكَ لَن يُسافِروا مَعَكَ

Instructor: how do you say “your son” to a woman?

هِي: إبنُكِ .. إبنُكِ

Instructor: how does your acquaintance ask you: ” how old is your son now?”

هُو: كَم عُمرُ إبِنِكِ الأن ؟

هُو: أجِب

Instructor: he is 28 years old

هِي: عُمرُهُ ثمَانية وعِشروُن سنة  

Instructor: he is travelling to England with his three children

هِي: هو مُسافِرٌ إلى إنجِلترا مَع أولادِهِ الثلاثَة

Instructor: and how old are his children

هُو: وكَم عُمرُ أولادِه ِ ؟

Instructor: referring to a girl say the younger one is two years old

هِي: الصُغرى عُمرُها سَنَتان .. عُمرُها .. عُمرُها سَنَتان

Instructor: now do you remember how to ask him “there are how many persons in your family” remember to use the singular form of person

هِي: كَم شَخصاً في عائلَتِكَ ؟

Instructor: he says I have two girls

هُو: عندى إبنَتان

Instructor: ask how old are the two girls

هِي: كَم عُمرُ الإبنَتين ؟

Instructor: he says the older one is 25 years old

هُو: الكُبرى عُمرُها خَمسةُ وعِشرون سنة .. عُمرُها

Instructor: she has a lot of work

هُو: عندهَا عَملٌ كَثير

Instructor: work and job are the same, how does he say :"she has an interesting job"

هُو:  عندها عَمَلٌ مُمِتع .. عَمَل

Instructor: he says again when I worked for Al-shrouq Company

هُو: عندما كُنت ُ أعمَلُ في شَرِكَةِ الشروق

Instructor: my job wasn’t interesting

هُو: عَمَلي لَم يكُن مُمتِعا ً

Instructor: ask him and how old is the younger one

هِي: وكَم عُمرُ الصُغرى ؟

Instructor: she is 23 years old

هُو: عُمرُها ثَلاثةٌ وعشِرونَ سنة

Instructor: he says she is going to New York next Friday

هُو: سَتَذهَبُ إلى نِيو يُورك الجُمعَةِ القَادِمَة

Instructor: she goes to the university

هُو: هي تَذهَبُ إلى الجَامِعَة

Instructor: she has an interesting job too

هُو: عندها عَمَلٌ مُمِتعٌ أيضا ً

هُو: قًل

Instructor: the weather is bad now in January

هِي: الطَقْسُ سَئ الأن في يَناير

Instructor: ask him again how old is your daughter

هِي: كَم عُمرُ إبنَتِك َ ؟

Instructor: he says she is 23 years old

هُو: عُمرُها ثَلاثةٌ وعشِرونَ سنة

Instructor: he asks you and how old is your son

هُو: وكَم عُمرُ إبنِك ِ؟

Instructor: say that he is 28 years old

هِي: عُمرَهُ ثَمانية ُوعِشرونَ سنة

Instructor: your acquaintance says our children will not travel with us

هُو: أولادُنا لَن يُسافِروا مَعنا

Instructor: ask him are you travelling to New York with your daughter?

هِي: هَل سَتُسافِرُ إلى نِيو يُورك مَع إبنَتِكَ ؟

Instructor: try to say for him to travel is very interesting

هُو: السَفَرُ مُمتِعٌ جداَ .. مُمتِعٌ

Instructor: but it’s expensive

هُو: لَكِنَه غَالي

Instructor: now he says next Friday

هُو: الجُمعَةُ القَادِمَة

Instructor: referring to his daughter he says “the older one and her husband are travelling to Beirut”

هُو: الكُبرى و زَوجُها سَيُسافِرون إلى بَيروت

Instructor: they are travelling without their children

هُو: سَيُسافِرون بِدون أولادِهُما

Instructor: she has a very interesting job

هُو: عندها عَمَلٌ مُمِتعٌ جدا ً

Instructor: before leaving you ask him again where do you work now

هِي: أين َ تَعمَلُ الأن ؟

Instructor: he says I worked for Al-shrouq Company before

هُو: كُنتُ اعمَل في شَرِكَة الشروق مِن قَبل .. كُنتُ اعمَلُ

Instructor: but now I work for 9-4

هُو: لَكِن الأن أعمَل من التاسعة صباحاً إلى الرابعة مساءً  

Instructor: now my job is very interesting

هُو: عَمَلي الأن مُمتِعٌ جِدا ً

Instructor: he continues” when I worked for Al-shrouq Company”

هُو: عندماُ كُنت ُ أعمَلُ  في شَرِكَة الشروق

Instructor: my job was not interesting

هُو: عَمَلي لَم يكُن مُمتِعا ً

Instructor: he says to you and now you’re working

هُو: والأن أنتِ تَعمَلين

Instructor: for the American university in Beirut

هُو: في الجَامِعَةِ الأمْريكِيةِ في بَيروت

Instructor: yes I like my job a lot now

هِي: نَعَم أحبُ عَملي كَثيرا ً الان

Instructor: you need to make a telephone call how do you say "excuse me" yourself

هِي: عَفوا ً .. عَفوا ً مِن فَضلِك

Instructor: here is" to call" which means to make a phone call

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: أتَصِل .. صِل .. تَصِل .. أتَصِل

هُو: كِيف تَقُول

Instructor: to call

هِي: أتَصِل

Instructor: now try to say I need to call

هِي: لابُدّ أن أتَصِل

هِي: لابُدّ أن أتَصِل

Instructor: what’s the word for "there is"

هِي: يُوجَد .. يُوجَد

Instructor: try to ask where is the phone?

هِي: أينَ يُوجَدُ الهاتف ؟

هِي: أينَ يُوجَدُ الهاتف؟.

Instructor: I think there is a telephone over there

هُو: أعتقدُ يُوجَدُ هاتفٌ هُناكَ

Instructor: yes, thanks I have to call

هِي: نَعَم شُكرا ً.... لابُد ان أتَصِل

Instructor: I have to call the hospital here’s how to say “the hospital”

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: المُستشفى .. المُ...ستشفى....المستش....فى

هُو: كِيف تَقُول

Instructor: the hospital

هِي: المُستشفى

Instructor: try to say to call information literally to call to the information

هِي: أتَصِل بالإسْتعلامَات

هِي: أتَصِل بالإسْتعلامَات

هُو: الأن  إسْتَمِع و أعِد

Instructor: the phone number

هِي: رَقْم الهاتف .. الهاتف .. رَقْم .. رَقْم الهاتف  (ملحوظة للراوية بنطق القاف و عليها سكون في كلمة رقْم )

Instructor: literally you’re saying number the telephone, what is the word for number

هِي: رَقْم .. رَقْم

Instructor: how do you say the phone number?

هِي: رَقْم الهاتف

Instructor: I don’t have the phone number

هِي: لَيس عندي رَقْمُ الهاتف

Instructor: say that you have to call the information first

هِي: لابُد أن أتَصِل بالإستِعلامَات أولا ً

Instructor: I don’t have the phone number

هِي: لَيس عندي رَقْمُ الهاتف

Instructor: now try to say before I had the number

هِي: كَان عندى رَقْمُ الهاتف مِن قَبل.. كَان عندى.. كَان

Instructor: say you have to call information

هِي: لابُد أن أتَصِل بالإستِعلامَات.. بالإستِعلامَات

Instructor: you call information and just had the number say this is the phone number

هِي: هَذا رَقْمُ الهاتف

Instructor: you try to make the call but don’t get through, here’s how to say the number was wrong

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: الرَقْمُ خَطأ .. خَطأ

هُو: كَيفَ تَقول

Instructor: wrong

هِي: خَطأ

Instructor: tell your acquaintance that the number was wrong

هِي: كان الرَقْمُ خَطِأ

Instructor: I had the phone number

هِي: كَان عندى رَقْمُ الهاتف

Instructor: the number was wrong

هِي: كان الرَقْمُ خَطأ

Instructor: I will call information

هِي: سَأتَصِل بالإستِعلامَات

Instructor: here’s how to say I had the wrong number, literally the number the wrong

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: كَان عندى الرَقَمُ الخطأ .. الرَقَمُ الخَطأ

Instructor: note that with the wrong number you say

هُو: الرَقَمُ الخَطأ

Instructor: but with the number is wrong you say

هُو: الرَقْمُ خَطأ

Instructor: say together the wrong number, the number is wrong

هُو: الرَقْم الخَطأ.. الرَقْمُ خَطأ

Instructor: say that you will call later

هِي: سأتَصِلُ  فيما بعد

Instructor: say again I had the wrong number

هِي: كَان عندى الرَقْمُ الخَطأ.. كَان عندى الرَقْمُ الخَطأ

Instructor: now it’s another day and you and a friend are at a café, after you place your order ask the waiter where is the telephone.

هِي: أينَ الهاتف ؟

هِي: أينَ الهاتف ؟

Instructor:  say thanks, I need to call

هِي: شُكرا ً لابُدّ أن أتَصِل

Instructor: you try but your call doesn’t get through, back at the table you tell your friend before I had the number

هِي: مِن قَبلُ كَان عندى رَقْمُ الهاتف

Instructor: but the number was wrong

هِي: لَكِن الرَقَم كَان خطأًً

Instructor: I need to call later

هِي: سأتَصِل فيما بعد

هُو: الأن قُل

Instructor: I will call information

هِي: سأتَصِلُ بِالإستِعلامَات.. سأتَصِلُ بِالإستِعلامَات  

Instructor: but at the moment I need to have a coffee

هِي: لَكِن الأن لابُدّ أن أشرَبَ قَهوَة

Instructor: your friend says: this morning the weather was bad

هُو: هذا الصباح... الطَقسُ كان سَيئاً.. سَئ....سيئاً

Instructor: but now the weather is very nice

هُو: لَكِن الأن الطَقسُ لَطيفاً جِدا ً

Instructor: after a while you say I need to call now

هِي: لابُدّ أن أتَصِل الأن

Instructor: I will call information first

هِي: سأتَصِلُ بِالإستِعلامَات أولا ً

Instructor: and later I can call the university

هِي: و فيما بعد أستَطيعُ أن أتَصِلَ بِالجاَمِعَة

Instructor: how does he ask you where you are working now?

هُو: أين َ تَعمَلينَ الأن ؟

Instructor: tell him you work in the American university in Beirut

هِي: أعمَلُ في الجَامِعَةِ الأمرِيكِيةِ في بَيروُت

هُو: قُل

Instructor: my job is very interesting

هِي: عَمِلي مُمتِعٌ جِدا ً

Instructor: This is the end of unit 48 and the end of today’s lesson
