هِي: عَفوَا ً .. هَل تَعرِف أين َ الهاتفُ مِن فَضلِك؟

هُو: هُناك.. أمام المَطعَم

هِي: أينَ أشتَري الجَريدَة ؟

هُو: شَارِع عَابِد .. لَيس بَعيدا ً .. إذهَبي يَمينا ً ثم إستَمري للأمام

هِي: شُكرا ً جَزيلا ً

هُو: إستَمِع مَرة أُخرى

هِي: عَفوَا ً .. هَل تَعرِف أين َ الهاتفُ مِن فَضلِك؟

هُو: هُناك.. أمام المَطعَم

هِي: أينَ أشتَري الجَريدَة ؟

هُو: شَارِعُ عَابِد .. لَيس بَعيدا ً .. إذهَبي يَمينا ً ثم إستَمري للأمام

هِي: شُكرا ً جَزيلا ً

Instructor:  now an acquaintance is visiting you talking about her daughter, she says “she has an interesting job”

هِي: عندها عَمَلٌ مُمِتع

Instructor: she and her husband are travelling to New York next week

هِي: هِي و زَوجُها سَيُسافِرانِ إلى نِيو يُورك الأُسبُوعَ القَادِم

Instructor: you tell her you used to travel to New York for work say “when I worked for Al-shrouq”

هُو: عندما كُنت ُ أعمَل في شَرِكَة الشروق

Instructor: she asks where you are working now.

هِي: أين تَعمَلُ الأن؟

Instructor: I work for Razwan Company now

هو: أنا أعملُ في شركة رضوان الآن

Instructor: tell her I’m working for 9-4 now

هُو: أعمَلُ من التاسعة صباحاً حتى الرابعة مساءاً  الأن

Instructor: my job was interesting before

هُو: عَمَلي كان مُمتِعا ً مِن قَبل

Instructor: when I worked for Al-shrouq Company

هُو: عندما كُنت ُ أعمَل في شَرِكَة ِ الشروق

Instructor: say to her and you’re working for the American university

هُو: و أنتِ  ....هل تَعمَلين في الجَامِعَةِ الأمرِيكِية؟

Instructor: she says yes I like my job a lot now

هِي: نَعَم وأُحب ُ عَمَلي كَثيرا ً الأن

Instructor: but before I too worked for Al-shrouq

هِي: لَكِن مِن قَبل كُنت ُ أعمَل في شَرِكَة الشروق أيضا ً

Instructor: now I worked for the American university in Beirut

هِي: الأن أعمَلُ في الجَامِعَةِ الأمرِيكِيةِ في بَيرُوت

Instructor: now she asks you “where are your children”

هِي: أين َ أولادُكَ ؟

Instructor: my son is travelling to Tartus on Friday

هُو: إبنِي سَيُسافِرُ إلى طَرطُوس يَومَ الجُمُعَة

Instructor: how does she ask you how old your son is?

هِي: كَم عُمرُ إبِنُكَ ؟

Instructor: tell her he is 20 years old

هُو: عُمرُه ُ عِشرُون عَاما ً

Instructor: referring to her daughter how did she say “she has an interesting job”

هِي: عندها عَمَلٌ مُمِتع

Instructor: now referring to your son try to say “he has a very interesting job”

هُو: عندهُ عَمَلٌ مُمِتعٌ جِدا ً .. عندَه

Instructor: tell her again that he is 20 years old

هُو: عُمرُه ُ عِشرُون عَاما ً

Instructor: and he has an interesting job

هُو: و هو عنده عَمَلٌ مُمِتع

Instructor: she asks you "how old is your daughter now?"

هُي: كَم عُمرُ إبِنتُكَ الأن؟

Instructor: my daughter she is 16 years old

هُو: إبنَتي عُمرُها سِتَةُ عَشرَ عَاماً

Instructor: your friend needs a telephone how does she ask if she can call

هِي:هل لي أن أتَصِل؟

Instructor: of course the telephone is over there

هُو: بِالطَبع الهاتفُ هُناك

Instructor: here’s how she says thank you very much

هي: شكراً جزيلا ً

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: شُكرا ً جَزيلا ً .. جَزيلا ً .. شُكرا ً جَزيلا ً

Instructor: how do you ask her do you have the phone number?

هُو: هَل مَعَكِ الرَقْم ؟ (ملحوظة للراوي بوضع السكون على القاف في كلمة رقم )

Instructor: she searches her pockets she says “I had the number before”

هِي: كَان عندى رَقْمُ الهاتف مِن قَبل

Instructor: she tries to dial the number but isn’t successful; she says the number was wrong

هِي: كَان الرَقْمُ خَطأً ً  ( ملاحظة التنوين بالفتح على نهاية كلمة خطأ )

Instructor: I will call to information

هِي: سَأتَصِلُ بالإستِعلامَات

Instructor: here’s how she says” I will try”

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: سَأُحاوِل .. سَأُحاوِل

Instructor: how does she say that she will call later?

هِي: سَأُحاوِل فيما بعد

Instructor: here’s again or one more time

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: مَرَة ثانية .. مَرَة .. مَرَة ثانية

Instructor: how do you say again?

هِي: مَرَة ثانية

Instructor: how would she say that she will try again?

هِي: سَأُحاوِلُ مَرَةً ثانية

Instructor: she says that before the number was wrong

هِي: مِن قَبل كان الرَقْمُ خَطأ ً

Instructor: she says she will try again later

هِي: سَأُحاوِل مَرَةً ثانية فيما بعد  

Instructor: how does she say that she has to call information?

هِي: لابُدّ أن أتَصِلَ بالإستِعلامَات

Instructor: at the end of her call she says to the operator” thank you very much”

هِي: شُكرا ً جَزيلا ً

Instructor: she tells you this is the phone number

هِي: هَذا هُو رَقْمُ الهاتف

Instructor: later she says this time the number is right; first try the phrase of “this time”

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: هَذِه المَرَة .. مَرَة .. هَذِه المَرَة

Instructor: here’s how to say the number is right

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: الرَقْمُ صَحيَح .. الرَقْم .. الرَقْمُ صَحيَح

Instructor: literally you say the number correct; try to say this time the number is right

هِي: هَذِه المَرَة الرَقْمُ صَحيَح

Instructor: what’s the word for wrong

هِي: خَطِأ

Instructor: she says before the number was wrong, literally before it was the number wrong

هِي: مِن قَبلُ كان الرَقْمُ خَطأ ً

Instructor: she says the number is right this time

هِي: هَذِه المَرَة الرَقْمُ صَحيَح .. صَحيَح

Instructor: she says she will try again

هِي: سَأُحاوِلُ مَرَةً أُخْرى .. مَرَة أُخْرى

Instructor: she says again this time the number is right

هِي: هَذِه المَرَة الرَقْمُ صَحيَح

Instructor: now imagine you’re an American woman speaking to a new acquaintance at a conference in Beirut. How does he ask you where are you working?

هُو: أين َ تَعمَلين ؟

Instructor: tell him you work for the American university

هِي: أعمَلُ في الجَامِعَةِ الأمرِيكِية

Instructor: how do you ask him where he is working now?

هِي: أين تَعمَلُ الأن؟

Instructor: he tells you I work for Al-shrouq Company

هُو: أعمَلُ في شَرِكَة الشروق

Instructor: he adds my job is very interesting

هُو: وعَمَلي مُمتِعٌ جِدا ً

Instructor: ask him if he has children

هِي: هَل عندكَ أوْلاد ؟

Instructor: he tells you yes I have a girl and a boy

هُو: نَعَم عندى ولد و بنت

Instructor: ask him are your children here with you

هِي: هَل أولاَدَكَ هُنا مَعَكَ ؟ .. هَلْ أولاَدَكَ هُنا  ....معك َ ؟

Instructor: he answers no we are travelling without our children

هُو: لا ....سَنُسافِرُ بِدونِ أولادِنا

Instructor: it’s very expensive to travel now

هُو: السَفَرُ غَالي الأن

Instructor: now ask him how old is his son

هي: كَم عُمرُ إبنُكَ ؟

Instructor: do you remember how to say 10 years

هو : عشر سَنوَات

Instructor: with the numbers ”three to ten” you use the plural word for years, now try to answer” my son he is ten years old”

هُو: إبنِي عُمرُهُ عَشرُ سَنوَات .. سَنوَات.. عَشرُ سَنوَات

Instructor: say again ten years old

هُو: عَشرُ سَنوَات

Instructor: now he says my daughter she is 20 years old

هُو: إبنَتي عُمرُها عِشرُونَ سنة

Instructor: she is at the university

هُو: هِي في الجَامِعَة.. جَامِعَة.. الجَامِعَة

Instructor: there two forms of saying the word "year"…..Listen

هي: سنة ......عام

Instructor: how about the two forms of the plural of "year"

هو : سنوات .....أعوام

Instructor: listen once more to both plural & singular forms of "year"…..starting with singular

هو : سنة ......عام

هي: سنوات .....أعوام

Instructor: he says again my son is ten years old

هُو: إبنِي عُمرُهُ عَشرُ سَنوَات

Instructor: and my daughter is at Damascus University

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: وإبنَتي في جَامِعَةِ دِمَشق.. دِمَشق .. جَامِعَةِ دِمَشق

هُو: إبنَتي في جَامِعَةِ دِمَشق

Instructor: really?

هِي: حَقا ً؟

Instructor: referring to man say my friend also is at Damascus University

هِي: صَديِقي أيضا ً في جَامِعَة دِمَشق

Instructor: do you remember how to say this letter is for him

هِي: هَذِه الرِسالَة له

Instructor: now try to say before I used to work with him

هِي: مِن قَبل كُنتُ أعمَلُ مَعَهُ.. مَعَهُ

Instructor:  when I worked for Al-shrouq Company

هُو: عندما كُنت ُ أعمَلُ في شَرِكَةِ الشروق

Instructor: how did your friend say that his son is ten years old?

هُو: إبنِي عُمرُهُ عَشرُ سَنوَات

Instructor: you need to use the telephone ask him “where is the telephone.”

هِي: أينَ الهاتف؟

Instructor: your acquaintance says I think there is a telephone over there

هُو: أعتقدُ الهاتفُ هُناك

Instructor: you see it say yes thank you very much

هِي: نَعَم شُكرا ً جَزيلا ً

Instructor: add I have a phone number for my daughter, "for" is understood

هي: عندى رَقْمُ هاتفِ إبنَتي

Instructor: but the number was wrong

هِي:لَكِن كَان الرَقْمُ خَطأ ً

Instructor: it wasn’t the right number

هِي: لم يكن الرَقْم الصَحيح

هِي: لم يكن الرَقْم الصَحيح

Instructor: he says I can call information

هُو: أستطيعُ أن أتَصِلَ بالإستِعلامَات

Instructor: tell him you will try again now

هِي: سَأُحاوِلُ مَرَة أُخْرى الأن

Instructor: tell him I had a number but the number was wrong

هِي: كَان عندى الرَقْم لَكِن الرَقَم كان خَطأ

Instructor: and I need to call today

هِي: ولابُدّ أن أتَصِلَ اليَوم

Instructor: she has an interesting job in New York

هِي: عندها عَمَلٌ مُمِتع في نِيو يُورك

Instructor:  tell him you will try again later

هِي: سَأُحاوِلُ مَرَةً ثانية فيما بعد

Instructor:  you need to go to the post office here’s the post office

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: مَكتَبُ البَريد . مَكتَبُ البَريد.

Instructor: say that you need to go to the post office

هِي: لابد ّ أن أذهبَ إلى مَكتَبِ البَريد

Instructor: do you know where the post office is?

هِي: هَل تَعرِفُ أين َ مَكتَبُ البَريد؟

هِي: هَل تَعرِفُ أين َ مَكتَبُ البَريد؟

Instructor: the post office is masculine…. he answers of course it’s over there

هُو: بِالطَبع إنهُ هُناكَ .. إنه ُ هُناكَ

Instructor: here’s how he asks you do you see it

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: هَل ترينه .. ترينه ؟

Instructor: how did he ask you “do you see it?”

هُو: هَل ترينه؟

Instructor: he says the post office is not far from here

هُو: مَكتَبُ البَريدِ لَيس بَعيدا ً عَن هُنا

Instructor: he says it’s over there

هُو: إنهُ هُناكَ .. إنه ُهُناكَ

Instructor: do you remember how to say to woman got to the right

هُو: إذهَبي إلى اليَمين

هُو: إذهَبي إلى اليَمين

Instructor: now he says the post office is on the right

هُو: مَكتَبُ البَريد إلى اليَمين

Instructor: he asks you again do you see it it’s on the right

هُو: هَل ترينهُ  ؟.....إنهُ إلى اليَمين.. هَل ترينه

Instructor: now here’s how to answer:" yes I see it"

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: نَعَم أراهُ .. .. أراه ُ

Instructor: he asks you again do you see it

هُو: هَل ترينهُ ؟

Instructor: how does the woman say yes I see it?

هِي: نَعَم أراه ُ

Instructor: it’s over there on the right

هِي: إنهُ هُناكَ إلى اليَمين

Instructor: this time I see it

هِي: هَذِه المَرَة أراه .. أراه

Instructor: you have a letter to mail, referring to a man say this letter is for a friend of mine

هِي: هَذِه الرِساَلَة إلى صَديِقي

هِي: هَذِه الرِساَلَة إلى صَديِقي

Instructor: before I used to work with him

هِي: مِن قَبل كُنتُ أعمَلُ مَعَه.. كُنتُ أعمَلُ مَعَه

Instructor: I have to go to the post office

هِي: لَابُدّ أن أذهَبَ إلى مَكتَبِ البَريد

Instructor: say again I used to work with him

هِي: كُنتُ أعمَلُ مَعَه

Instructor: still referring to the post office, he asks you again now do you see it

هُو: هَل ترينهُ الأن؟

هُو: أجِب

Instructor: yes thank you this time I see it

هِي: نَعَم هَذِه المَرَة أراه

Instructor: it’s another day and again you‘re looking for a post office, you stop someone on the street, say pardon me sir

هِي: عَفوا ً سَيدي

Instructor: ask where the post office is?

هِي: أين َ مَكتَبُ البَريد ؟

هِي: أين َ مَكتَبُ البَريد ؟

Instructor: do you remember how to say to the left

هُو: إلى اليَسَار.. إلى اليَسَار

Instructor: referring to the post office say it’s over there on the left

هُو: إنهُ هُناك إلى اليَسَار.. إلى اليَسَار

Instructor: he points to the post office and asks “do you see it”?

هُو: هَل ترينه ُ؟

Instructor: yes I see it thank you

هُو: قُل

هِي: نَعَم أراهُ شُكرا ً جَزيلا ً.. أراهُ

Instructor: now you’re in a café with a friend, ask how old is his son now?

هِي: كَم عُمرُ إبِنُكَ الأن؟

Instructor: he answers he is twenty years old

هُو: عُمرُهُ عِشرُون عَاما ً

Instructor: he has a very interesting job

هُو: عنده عَمَلٌ مُمتِع

Instructor: he lives in Tartus

هُو: هُو يَعيِشُ في طَرطُوس

Instructor: referring to his son and a friend, how does your friend say” they’re travelling to Canada in January.

هُو: سَيُسافِرانِ إلى كَنَدا في يَناير

Instructor: but in January the weather is very cold in Canada

هِي: لَكِن الطَقسَ في كَنَدا بارِدٌ جِدا ً في يناير

Instructor: he laughs and says yes but he loves Canada a lot

هُو: نَعَم لَكِنَه يُحبُ كَنَدا جِدا ً

Instructor: now say my husband and I are travelling to England

هِي: أنا و زَوجِي سَنُسافِرُ إلى إنجِلترا

Instructor: our children aren’t travelling with us

هِي: أولادُنا لَن يُسافِرون مَعنا

Instructor: not this time

هِي: لَيس هَذِه المَرَة

هِي: لَيس هَذِه المَرَة

Instructor: our son prefers to stay at home

هِي: إبنُنا يُفَضِلُ أن يَمكثَ في المَنزِل

Instructor: he has an interesting job now

هِي: عنده عَمَلٌ مُمتِع الأن

Instructor: our daughter is at Damascus University

هِي: إبنَتُنا فِي جَامِعَة دِمَشق

Instructor: our children aren’t going to England this time

هِي: أولادُنا لَن يُسافِرون مَعنا في هَذِه المَرَة

Instructor: now say that you have to call

هِي: لابُد أن أتَصِل

Instructor: my daughter is at the university today

هِي: إبنَتي في الجَامِعَة اليَوم

Instructor: we will have lunch together

هِي: سَنتنَاوَل الغَداء مَعا ً

Instructor: I have the phone number

هِي: عندى رقمُ الهاتف

Instructor: when you return your friend asks is the number right?

هُو: هَل الرَقْمُ صَحيح ؟

هُو: هَل الرَقْمُ صَحيح ؟

هُو: أجِب

Instructor: no the number was wrong

هِي: لا الرَقْمُ كَان خَطأً ً

Instructor: I have the phone number at home

هِي: عندى رَقْم ُالهاتفِ في المَنزِل

Instructor: it wasn’t the right number

هِي: لَم يكُنِ الرَقْمُ صَحيحا ً

Instructor: say that you will try again

هِي: سَأُحاوِلُ مَرَةً ثانية

Instructor: I have to call information

هِي:لابُد أن أتَصِلَ بالإسْتعلامَات

Instructor: I will try again later

هِي: سَأُحاوِلُ مَرَة ثانية فيما بعد

Instructor: showing you the way to the post office, how does he ask you do you see it?

هُو: هَل ترينه؟

Instructor: how do you say” yes I see it”

هِي: نَعَم أراه

هُو: قُل

Instructor: it’s over there on the right

هِي: إنهُ هُناكَ إلى اليَمين

Instructor: this time I see it

هِي:  هَذِه المَرَّة أراه
