Instructor: This is unit 51 of ALIF Classical Arabic Audio program 2, listen to this Arabic conversation.

Instructor: an American woman is talking to the counselor at Damascus hotel

هُو: إستَمِع إلى هَذِهِ المُحادَثَةِ العربية

هِي: عَفوا ً سَيدى .. زَوجِي يُريدُ طبيباً .. هل تستطيعُ أن تَعطِيَني رَقْمَ طبيبٍ جَيد ؟

هُو: بِالطبع سَيدَتي .. تَفَضلي

هِي: شُكرا ً جَزيلا ً

هُو: إستَمع مَرة أُخرى

هِي: عَفوا ً سَيدى .. زَوجِي يُريدُ طبيباً .. هل تستطيعُ أن تَعطِيَني رَقْمَ طبيبٍ جَيد ؟

هُو: بِالطبع سَيدَتي .. تَفَضلي

هِي: شُكرا ً جَزيلا ً

Instructor: now you are an American man talking with an acquaintance at a party, you’re talking about a mutual friend, say: "I used to work with him before"

هُو: كُنت ُ أعمَلُ مَعَهُ من قبل .. كُنت ُ أعمَلُ مَعَهُ من قبل.

Instructor: your acquaintance says “he has an interesting job now”

هِي: لَدَيهِ عَمَلٌ مُمتِعٌ الأن

Instructor: you’re looking for his phone number, tell her:" I will try"

هُو: سَاُحاوِل

Instructor: to call to information again

هُو: أن أتَصِلَ بِالإستِعلامَاتِ مَرَةً ثانية

Instructor: she asks about your children who are still in the United States; tell her my wife still writes letters to our children

هُو: مَازَالَت زَوجَتي تَكتُبُ رَسائِلاً

Instructor: she asks and you, do you still write letters?

هِي: وأنت َ؟ .. هَل مَازَلَتَ تَكتُبُ رَسائِلاً ؟

Instructor: no I prefer to send electronic messages

هُو:لا.. أنا أُفَضِلُ أن أُرسِلَ رسائلاً الكترونية

Instructor: she asks you” where do your children live?”

هِي: أين يَعِيشُونَ أولادُكَ ؟

Instructor: they live in Washington

هُو: هُم يَعيشُونَ في وَاشِنطُن

Instructor: my son is a student at the university

هُو: إبنِي طَالِبٌ في الجَامِعَة

Instructor: my younger daughter is a student too

هُو: وإبنَتي الصُغرى طَالِبَةٌ أيضا ً

هُو: الأن قُل

Instructor: and my older daughter is a doctor in Washington

هُو: وإبنَتي الكُبرى طبيبة ٌ في وَاشِنطُن

Instructor: she works for the university

هِي: هِي تَعمَلُ في الجَامِعَة

Instructor: your friend comments:" she has an interesting job"

هِي:  عندَها عَمَلٌ مُمتِع

Instructor: tell her my wife still writes letters

هُو: مَازَالَت زَوجَتي تَكتُب رَسائِلاً

Instructor: but I prefer to send e-mails

هُو:لَكِن ...أنا أُفَضِلُ أن أُرسِلَ إيِميلات

Instructor: I never write letters

هُو: لا أكتُبُ رَسائِلاً أبدا ً

Instructor: ask her your daughter is a doctor… right?

هُو: إبنَتُكِ طبيبة ٌ .. حَقا ً ؟

Instructor: no she is a student at Damascus University

هِي: لا هِي طَالِبَةٌ في جَامِعَةِ دِمَشَق

Instructor: she adds and my son’s seven years old

هِي: وإبنِي عُمرُه ُ سَبعُ سَنوات

Instructor: you say:" he is not a student"

هُو: هُو لَيس طَالِباً

Instructor: she says” he is not a student yet”

هِي: هُو لَيسَ طالباً بَعد

Instructor: she says again that her son is seven years old

هِي: إبنِي عُمرُه ُ سَبعُ سَنوات

هُو: الأن قُل

Instructor: our son is a student in Washington

هُو: إبنُنا طَالِبٌ في وَاشِنطُن

Instructor: and our daughter works in Washington

هُو: وإبنَتُنا تَعمَلُ في وَاشِنطُن

Instructor: now another guest joins you she says our daughter is a student in Aleppo

هِي: إبنَتُنا طَالِبَةٌ في حَلَب

Instructor: but she never writes letters

هِي: لَكِن ... هي لا تكتُبُ رَسائِلاً أبدا ً

Instructor: how do you tell her that you prefer to send e-mails?

هُو: أنا أُفَضِلُ أن أُرسِلَ إيِميلات

هُو: قُل

Instructor: I never write letters to our children

هُو: لا أكتُبُ رَسائِلاً أبدا ً لِأولادِنا

Instructor: she says me too I prefer to send e-mails

هِي:أنا أيضا ً أُفَضِلُ أن أُرسِلَ إيِميلات

Instructor: I write letters from time to time

هِي: أكتُبُ رَسائِلاً أحيانا ً

Instructor: but I prefer to send e-mails

هِي:لَكِن... أنا أُفَضِلُ أن أُرسِلَ إيِميلات.

Instructor: now you and your wife are out walking, she has a letter to mail, how does she ask a passerby” do you know where is the post office is?”

هِي: هَل تَعرِفُ أين َ مَكتَبُ البَريد ؟

Instructor: he says of course it’s over there on the right

هُو: بِالطبع إنَه هُناكَ على اليَمين

Instructor: he asks “do you see it”

هُو: هَل ترينَه ُ؟

Instructor: she says no I’m sorry I didn’t see it

هِي: لا عَفوا ً لم أره ُ

Instructor: he points and says the post office is to the right

هُو: إنَهُ إلى اليَمين

Instructor: he asks again:" now, do you see it?"

هُو: الآن..هَل ترينهُ ؟

Instructor: she says:" yes, I see it now"

هِي: نَعَم أنا أراه ُ الأن

Instructor: now you see it too say yes it’s over there on the right

هُو: نَعَم إنَهُ هُناكَ على اليَمين

Instructor: she says:" yes, this time I see it"

هِي: نَعَم هَذِه المَرَة أراه ُ

Instructor: now imagine you are an American woman speaking with the counselor at your hotel; tell him my husband wants to see a doctor

هِي: زَوجِي يُريدُ أن يرى طبيباً

Instructor: can you give me a number of a good doctor

هِي:هل تستطيعُ أن تُعطِيَني رَقْم َ طبيبٍ جَيد؟

Instructor: the counselor answers: yes, of course

هُو: نعم ، بِالطبع  

Instructor: he tries to call a doctor for you but there’s no answer, tell him you will try again later

هِي: سَأُحاوِلُ مَرَة ً ثانيةً فيما بعد

Instructor: later you ask him can you give me a phone number of a doctor

هِي:هل تستطيعُ أن تَعطِيَني رَقْمَ طبيب ؟

Instructor: he says “Dr. Rasheed is a very good doctor”

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: الطبيبُ رَشيد.. طبيبٌ جَيدٌ جِدا ً.. الطبيب.. الطبيبُ رَشيد.. طبيبٌ جَيدٌ جِدا ً

Instructor: do you remember how to say in his office

هُو: في مَكتَبِهِ

Instructor: how would he say I don’t think doctor Rasheed is in his office today?

هُو: لا أعتقدُ الطبيبَ رَشيد في مَكتَبِهِ اليَوم

Instructor: ask why?

هِي: لِماذا ؟

Instructor: he says that today is a holiday here’s the word for “a holiday”

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: عُطلَة .. عُطلَة

Instructor: how would he say today is a holiday

هُو: اليَومُ عُطلَة.. اليَومُ عُطلَة

Instructor: he says again Dr. Rasheed is a very good doctor

هُو: الطبيبُ رَشيد.. طبيبٌ جَيدٌ جِدا ً

Instructor: but today is a holiday

هُو: لَكِنَ اليَومُ عُطلَة

Instructor: he says I don’t think he is in his office today

هُو: لا أعتقدُ أنَه ُ في مَكتَبِهِ اليَوم

Instructor: the number is right

هُو: الرَقْم ُصَحيح

Instructor: he says I will try to call to his office

هُو: سَأحاوِلُ أن أتَصِلَ بِمَكتَبِهِ

Instructor: but I don’t think he is in his office today

هُو:لَكِن لا أعتقدُ أنَه ُ في مَكتَبِهِ اليَوم

هُو: إسأل

Instructor: today is a holiday

هِي: اليَومُ عُطلَة؟

Instructor: are the stores open?

هِي: هَلِ المَتاجرُ مَفتُوحَة ؟

Instructor: he answers “no the stores are closed today”

هُو: لا المتاجرُ مُغلَقَةٌ اليَوم

Instructor: here’s how to ask him:" and the pharmacies?"

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: والصَيدَليات .. لِيات.. الصَيدَليات.. والصَيدَليات

Instructor: are the pharmacies closed too?

هِي: هَل الصَيدَلياتُ مُغلَقَةٌ أيضا ً؟

Instructor: he answers no today is a holiday but

هُو: لا اليَومُ عُطلَة ... لَكِن

Instructor: some pharmacies are open

هُو: بَعضُ الصَيدَلياتِ مَفتُوحَة

Instructor: until six o’clock today

هُو: إلى السَاعَةِ السَادِسَةِ اليَوم

Instructor: do you remember how to say:" there is or there are"?

هُو: يُوجَد

Instructor: now he tells you that some pharmacies are open today

هُو: بَعضُ الصَيدَلياتِ مَفتُوحَةٌ اليَوم

Instructor: you want to call one here’s the word for “pharmacy”

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: صَيدَلِية .. صَيدَلِية

Instructor: how would you say the pharmacy?

هِي: الصَيدَلِية.. الـ .. الصَيدَلِية (ملحوظة للراوية ...لام شمسية ...لا تنطق)

هُو: إسأل

Instructor: can you give me?

هِي: هل تستطيعُ أن تَعطِيَني ؟

Instructor: a phone number of the pharmacy?

هِي: رَقْمَ  هاتفِ الصَيدَلِية؟

Instructor: and a number of Dr. Rasheed?

هِي: ورَقْمَ الطبيبِ رَشِيد ؟

Instructor: he writes down the number on a piece of paper as he hands it to you he says “here’s the number for his office”.

هُو: تَفَضلي رَقْمَ مَكتَبِهِ

Instructor: Dr. Rasheed is a good doctor

هُو: الطبيبُ رَشيد.. طبيبٌ جَيد

Instructor: but I don’t think he is in his office now

هُو:لَكِن لا أعتقدُ أنَه ُ في مَكتَبِهِ الأن

Instructor: today is a holiday

هُو: اليَومُ عُطلَة

Instructor: later you want to find a pharmacy, as you’re leaving the hotel the doorman asks do you want help

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: هَل تُريدُ مُساعَدَةً .. مُساعَدَة.. هَل تُريدُ مُساعَدَةً ؟

Instructor: here is the word for "help"

هُو: مُساعَدَة

Instructor: try to answers yes I want help

هِي: نَعَم أُريدُ مُساعَدَة

Instructor: he asks again do you want assistance (help)?

هُو: هَل تُريدُ مُساعَدَةً ؟

Instructor: you show him the paper with the name of the pharmacy, here’s how to say” this pharmacy”

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: هَذِه الصَيدَلِية .. هَذِه.. هَذِه الصَيدَلِية

Instructor: try to tell him I want to go to this pharmacy

هِي: أُريدُ أن أذهَبَ إلى هَذِهِ الصَيدَلِية

Instructor: pharmacy is feminine how do you ask if is it far.

هِي: هَل هِيَ بَعيدَة؟

هِي: هَل هِي بَعيدَة؟

Instructor: how would he ask you do you want help?

هُو: هَل تُريدُ مُساعَدَة؟

Instructor: how does he ask her: "can you wait for a minute?"

هُو: هَل تستطيعينَ أن تَنتَظِري دَقيقة ؟

Instructor: he wants now to tell you" it’s five minutes from here by taxi", first here’s how to say “ five minutes”

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو:  خَمس دَقائِق

هُو:  خَمس دَقائِق

Instructor: this word for minutes is used for numbers between three and ten, say it’s five minutes

هُو: هِيَ عَلى بُعدِ خَمسِ دَقائِق

Instructor: how would he say it’s five minutes from here by taxi

هُو: هِي عَلى بُعدِ خَمسِ دَقائِق بِسيارةِ الأجرة

Instructor: ask him is this pharmacy far

هِي: هَل هَذِه الصَيدَلِيةُ بَعيدَة؟

Instructor: he tells you again:" it ’s five minutes from here by taxi"

هُو: هِي عَلى بُعدِ خَمسِ دَقائِق بِسيارةِ الأجرة

Instructor: he says today is a holiday

هُو: اليَومُ عُطلَة

Instructor: he shows you but there are pharmacies open today

هُو: لَكِنَ بَعضَ الصَيدَلياتِ مَفتُوحَةٌ اليَوم

Instructor: before writing the directions, he wants to ask “are you able to read Arabic?” first here’s to read addressing a woman

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: تَقرَأي .. تَقرَأي

Instructor: you will use

هُو: هل تستطيعين ؟

Instructor:  meaning, are you able?

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: تَستَطيعِين .. هل تَستَطيعِين ؟

Instructor: Now how would he ask are you able to read Arabic?

هُو: هَل تَستَطيعِينَ أن تَقرَأي العَرَبِية ؟

هُو: هَل تَستَطيعِينَ أن تَقرَأي العَرَبِية ؟

Instructor: how does he ask her do you want help?

هُو: هَل تُريدينَ مُساعَدَة؟

Instructor: try to answer no I don’t want help this time

هِي: لا .. لا أُريدُ مُساعَدَةً هَذِه المَرَة

Instructor: here’s how you tell him that you are able to read Arabic

هُو: إستَمِع

هِي: أنا أستَطيعُ أن أقرَأ العَرَبِية

هِي: أنا أستَطيعُ أن أقرَأَ العَرَبِية  

Instructor: you say” I can” meaning I’m able to

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي:أنا  أستَطِيعُ.. أستَطِيعُ.. أستَطِيعُ

Instructor: say again I can

هِي: أنا أستَطِيعُ

Instructor: now here’s " I read"

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: أقرَأ.. أقرَأ

Instructor: try to say I can read Arabic

هِي: أنا أستَطيعُ أن أقرَأَ العَرَبِية  

Instructor: he asks again can you read Arabic

هُو: هَل تَستَطيعِينَ أن تَقرَأي العَرَبِية ؟.. تَقرَأي

Instructor: how does he say that the pharmacy is five minutes from here?

هُو: الصَيدَلِيةُ عَلى بُعدِ خَمسِ دَقائِق من هنا

Instructor: now he asks are you able to read Arabic

هُو: هَل تَستَطيعِينَ أن تَقرَأي العَرَبِية ؟

Instructor: he asks you do you want help

هُو: هَل تُريدينَ مُساعَدَة؟

Instructor: no I can read Arabic a little

هِي: أنا أستَطيعُ أن أقرَأ العَرَبِية َ قَليلا ً

Instructor: here’s how to say the address

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: العُنوان.. العُنوان

Instructor: now try to say I’m able to read the address

هِي: أستَطيعُ أن أقرَأ العُنوان

هِي: أستَطيعُ أن أقرَأ العُنوان

Instructor: how does he say the address is right literally the address right

هُو: العُنوانُ صَحِيح

هُو: العُنوانُ صَحِيح

Instructor: he asks you are you able to read Arabic

هُو: هَل تَستَطيعِينَ أن تَقرَأي العَرَبِية ؟

Instructor: you read the address and ask him “is this pharmacy far?”

هِي: هَل هَذِهِ الصَيدَلِيةُ بَعيدَة؟

Instructor: how does he say again that the pharmacy is not far from here?

هُو: الصَيدَلِيةُ عَلى بُعدِ خَمسِ دَقائِق مِن هُنا

Instructor: he asks again do you want help

هُو: هَل تُريدينَ مُساعَدَة؟

Instructor: referring to a slip of papers he asks her “are you able to read the address?”

هُو: هَل تَستَطيعِينَ أن تَقرَأي العُنوان ؟

Instructor: tell him:" no, I don’t want help this time"

هِي: لا .. لا أُريدُ مُساعَدَةً هَذِه المَرَة

Instructor: I’m able to read the address

هِي: أنا أستَطيعُ أن أقرَأ العُنوان..

هِي: أستَطيع أن أقرَأ

Instructor: now you’re in a taxi and you show the driver your address, address is masculine, how does he say that it’s five minutes from here

هُو: هوَ عَلى بُعدِ خَمسِ دَقائِقٍ مِن هُنا

Instructor: you know you’re close to the pharmacy but the driver says he doesn’t see it, he asks you are you able to read Arabic?

هُو: هَل تَستَطيعِينَ أن تَقرَأي العَرَبِية ؟

Instructor: tell the driver yes I’m able to read the address

هِي: نَعَم أنا أستَطيعُ أن أقرَأ العُنوان

Instructor: he asks “do you have the right address?”

هُو: هَل معكِ العُنوانُ الصَحِيح؟

هُو: هَل معكِ العُنوانُ الصَحِيح؟

Instructor: then he sees it and says to you the pharmacy is over there on the left

هُو: الصَيدَلِيةُ هُناكَ إلى اليَساَر

Instructor: now how does the pharmacist ask you do you want assistance?

هُو: هَل تُريدينَ مُساعَدَة؟

هُو: هَل تُريدينَ مُساعَدَةً سَيدَتي؟

Instructor: tell him yes I want help please

هِي: نَعَم أُريِدُ مُساعَدَةً مِن فَضلِك

Instructor: how do you say thank you very much

هِي: شُكرا ً جَزيلا ً

Instructor: now you are talking with a friend about his daughter, he says she is a student at Damascus University  

هُو: هِي طَالِبَةٌ في جَامِعَةِ دِمَشق.. جَامِعَة دِمَشق

Instructor: ask him do you right letters?

هِي: هَل تَكتُبُ رَسائِلاً ؟

Instructor: he says that he doesn’t but my daughter writes a lot of e-mails

هُو: لَكِن إبنَتي تَكتُبُ الكثيرَ من الإيميلات.....الكثيرَ من الرسائل ِ الالكترونية   

Instructor: I like to read e-mails

هُو: أحبُ أن أقرأ الإيميلات.. أحبُ أن أقرأ

Instructor: he tells you she works for the university too

هُو:هِي تَعمَلُ في الجَامِعَةِ أيضا ً

Instructor: now he says and my son is a student too

هُو: وابنِي طَالِبٌ أيضا ً

Instructor: she is a student at the university with him

هُو: هِي طَالِبَة في الجَامِعَة مَعهُ

Instructor: later you’re asking for directions, the man you’re talking to asks “are you able to read the address”?

هُو: هَل تَستَطيعِينَ أن تَقرَأي العُنوان ؟

Instructor: he tells you it’s five minutes from here

هُو: هو عَلى بُعدِ خَمسِ دَقائِقٍ مِن هُنا

Instructor: tell him thank you very much

هِي: شُكرا ً جَزيلا ً

Instructor: This is the end of unit fifty one and the end of today’s lesson
