هُو: إستَمِع إلى هَذِه المُحادَثَة

Instructor: an American woman is speaking with a clerk at a hotel

هِي: أُريدُ أن أذهَبَ إلى الصَيدَلِية.. هَل هِي بَعيدَة؟

هُو: لا لَيسَت بَعيِدَة هِي عَلى بُعد خَمس دَقائِق مِن هُنا ..هَل تَستَطيعِين أن تَقرَأي العُنوان؟

هِي: نَعَم أستَطيع

هُو: لَيسَت بَعيِدَة في شَارِعِ البطل

هِي: شَكراً  جزيلَا

هُو: إستَمع مَرة أُخرى

هِي: أُريدُ أن أذهَب إلى الصَيدَلِية.. هَل هِي بَعيدَة؟

هُو: لا لَيسَت بَعيِدَة هِي عَلى بُعدِ خَمسِ دَقائِق مِن هُنا ..هَل تَستَطيعِين أن تَقرَأي العُنوان؟

هِي: نَعَم أستَطيع

هُو: لَيسَت بَعيِدَة.  في شَارِع البطل

هِي: شَكرا ً جزيلًا

Instructor: now you are an American woman in Arab countries you’re leafing through a phonebook, how does the Arab countriesn acquaintance ask if you want help?

هُو: هَل تُريدينَ مُساعَدَة؟

Instructor: how would you say yes I want assistance?

هِي: نَعَم أُريِدُ مُساعَدَة

Instructor: he asks can you read Arabic

هُو: هَل تَستَطيعِين أن تَقرَأي اللُغَة العَرَبِية ؟

Instructor: say I’m able to read the address

هِي: أنا أستَطيعُ أن أقرَأَ العُنوان

Instructor: but I’m not able to read the number

هِي:لَكِن لا أستَطيعُ أن أقرَأ الرَقْم

Instructor: can you give me a number of a good doctor?

هِي: هل تستطيعُ أن تَعطِيني رَقْمَ طبيبٍ جَيد ؟

Instructor: use

هُو: مُمكِن

Instructor: my husband wants to see a doctor

هِي: زَوجِي يُريدُ رؤيةَ الطبيب  

Instructor: he tells you Dr. Rasheed is a good doctor

هُو: الطبيب رَشيد جَيد جِدا ً

Instructor: but I don’t think he is in his office now

هُو: لَكِن لا أظَنُ أنَه ُفي مَكتَبِهِ الأن

Instructor: today is a holiday

هُو: اليَوم عُطلَة

Instructor: later how do you tell a college that you want to buy something from the pharmacy?

هِي: أُرِيدُ أن أشتَريَ شَيئا ً مِن الصَيدَليِة

Instructor: but the stores are closed

هِي: لَكِن المَتاجرَ مُغلَقَة

هُو: قُل

Instructor: I don’t think that the pharmacy is open

هِي: لا أظَنُ أن الصَيدَليةَ مَفتُوحَة

Instructor: I want help please

هِي: أُرِيد مُساعَدَةً مِن فَضِلَك

هُو: إسأَل

Instructor: are the pharmacies open?

هِي: هَل الصَيدَليِات مَفتُوحَة  ؟

Instructor: tell him I want to buy an American newspaper

هِي: أُرِيُد أن أشتَرِيَ جَرِيدَةً أمرِيكِية

Instructor: and I need to buy something from the pharmacy

هِي: وأُرِيدُ أن أشتَريَ شَيئا ً مِن الصَيدَليِة

هُو: إسأَل

Instructor: are the pharmacies closed today?

هِي: هَل الصَيدَليِات مُغلَقَة؟

Instructor: he says it’s a holiday today

هُو: اليَومُ عُطلَة

Instructor: but the pharmacy in Al-thawrah Street is open

هُو: الصَيدَلِية في شَارِعِ الثورة مَفتُوحَة

Instructor: tell him I want to go to this pharmacy

هِي: أُريدُ أن أذهَبَ إلى هَذِه الصَيدَلِية

Instructor: how would he say I’m writing the address now

هُو: أنا أكتُبُ العِنوان الآن

Instructor: you look confused he asks do you need help

هُو: هَل تُريدينَ مُساعَدَة؟

Instructor: he asks you, are you able to read the address?

هُو: هَل تَستَطيعِينَ أن تَقرَأي العُنوان ؟

هُو: قُل

Instructor: I don’t think the pharmacies are open

هِي: لا أظُن الصَيدَليات مَفتُوحَة

Instructor: today is a holiday

هِي: اليَوم عُطلَة

Instructor: he says yes, yes I know the pharmacies are open

هُو:نَعَم نَعَم أعرِفُ أن الصَيدَليات مَفتُوحَة

Instructor: how does he ask you if you can read Arabic?

هُو: هَل تَستَطيعِينَ أن تَقرَأي العَرَبِية ؟

هُو: أجِب

Instructor: yes I’m able to read Arabic

هِي: نَعَم أستَطيع أن أقرَأَ العَرَبِية

Instructor: how does he say that this pharmacy is five minutes from here?

هُو: هَذِه الصَيدَلية عَلى بُعدِ خَمس دَقائِق مِن هُنا

Instructor: he asks you again are you able to read Arabic

هُو: هَل تَستَطيعِين أن تَقرَأي العَرَبِية ؟

Instructor: do you want assistance?

هُو: هَل تُريدين مُساعَدَة؟

هُو: أجِب

Instructor: no I’m able to read Arabic a little

هِي: أستَطيعُ أن أقرَأ العَرَبِية قَليلا ً

Instructor: you look at it and say:" I think the address in not correct"

هِي: لا أظُن أن العُنوان صَحيح

Instructor: he asks you: are you able to read the address?

هُو: هَل تَستَطيعِين أن تَقرَأي العُنوان؟

Instructor: how does he say this pharmacy is on Al-thawra  Street?

هُو: هَذِه الصَيدَلِية في شَارِع الثورة

Instructor: five minutes from here

هُو: عَلى بُعد خَمسِ دَقائِق مِن هُنا

هُو: قُل

Instructor: I want to buy a newspaper too

هِي: أرِيدُ أن أشتَرِيَ جَرِيدَةً أيضا ً

Instructor: he asks you again are you able to read the address?

هُو: هَل تَستَطيعِين أن تَقرَأي العُنوان؟

Instructor: tell him: " yes, thank you I’m able to read a little Arabic

هِي:نَعَم.. شُكرا ً أستَطيعُ أن أقرَأ العَرَبِية قَليلا ً

Instructor: but I don’t think the address is correct

هِي: لَكِن لا أظُن أن العُنوان صَحيح

Instructor: now you’re leaving your office to go to the post office, say : my wife writes a lot of letters for our children

هُو: زَوجَتي تَكتُب رَسائِلاً كَثيرة لِأولادُنا

Instructor: he asks if you could take a letter for him, he says this letter is for my son in Egypt

هُو: هَذِه الرِساَلَة لإبنِي في مِصر

Instructor: he checks the letter and says yes the address is correct

هُو: نَعَم... العُنوان صَحيح

Instructor: he says my son lives in Egypt

هُو: إبنَي يَعيش في مِصر

Instructor: how would he say he is a student?

هُو: هُو طَالِب

Instructor: my daughter lives in Egypt too

هُو: إبنَتي تَعيش في مِصر

Instructor: she works for the university, she is a physician

هُو: هِي تَعمَل في الجَامِعَة .. هِي طبيبة

Instructor: you want to tell him my family lives in America, here’s the word for America

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: أمِريكا.. أمِريكا

Instructor: say that your family lives in America

هِي: عَائِلَتي تَعيش في أمِريكا.. في أمِريكا

Instructor: tell him emphatically I prefer to send e-mails too

هِي: أنا أُفَضِل أن أُرسِل إيِميل أيضا ً

Instructor: he says sometimes I prefer to call

هُو: أحيانا ً أفَضِل أن أتَصِل

Instructor: he asks where your family does live in America

هُو: أينَ تعيشُ عائلتكَ في أمِريكا ؟

Instructor: you tell him my son and daughter both live in New York

هِي: إبنِي وإبنَتي كلاهُما يَعيشانِ في نِيو يُورك

هُو: أجِب

Instructor: my son is a student

هِي: إبنِي طَالِب

Instructor: and my daughter works in the university

هِي: وإبنَتي تَعمَلُ في الجَامِعَة

Instructor: she is a doctor

هِي: هِي طبيبة

Instructor: my daughter is not a student

هِي: إبنَتي لَيسَت طَالِبَة

Instructor: now you’re an American business man driving in an Arab country, you stopped to get direction from a woman passing by, here’s how to ask her are you able to help me

هُو: هَل تَستَطِعين مُساعَدَتي؟.. مُساعَدَتي.. هل...تَستَطِعين مُساعَدَتي مِن فَضلِك ؟

Instructor: how do you ask women “are you able to help me?”

هُو: هَل تَستَطِعين مُساعَدَتي؟

Instructor: here’s how to say I’m looking for

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: أنا أبحَثُ عَن .. أبحَثُ عَن....أنا أبحثُ عن

Instructor: say "I’m looking for"

هُو: أنا أبحَثُ عَن

Instructor: al-nahdah square, here’s the word for square

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: مَيدان .. مَيدان

Instructor: here’s how to say al-nahda square

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: مَيدان النهضة.. النهضة.. مَيدان النهضة

Instructor: try to say I’m looking for Al-nahda square

هُو: أنا أبحَثُ عَن مَيدانِ النهضة

Instructor: literally the square of al- nahda, say again I’m looking for Al-nahda square

هُو: أنا أبحَثُ عَن مَيدانِ النهضة

Instructor: ask the woman again” are you able to help me?”

هُو: هَل تَستَطِعينَ مُساعَدَتي ؟

Instructor: ask if she knows where the star square is?

هُو: هَل تَعرِفين أينَ يُوجَد مَيدان النهضة

Instructor: she answers no sir I’m sorry

هِي: لا عَفوا ً يا أخِي

Instructor: you ask another woman" are you able to help me"

هُو: هَل تَستَطِعين مُساعَدَتي؟

Instructor: how do you tell her you are looking for the star square?

هُو: أنا أبحَثُ عَن مَيدانِ النهضة

Instructor: she says go straight ahead

هِي:إذهَب إلى الأمَام مباشرةً

Instructor: say the word for “take” when giving someone directions….

هُو: اسلك

Instructor: now she says and then takes

هِي: ثُم إسلُك

Instructor:  do you remember the word for "first"

هِي: أوَل

Instructor: you use the same word to say the first try to say take the first street to the left

هِي: إسلُك أوَل شَارِع إلى اليسار

Instructor: ask her are you able to help me

هُو: هَل تَستَطِعين مُساعَدَتي؟

هُو: إسأل

Instructor: AL-nahda square please, is it far?

هُو:  مَيدان النهضة من فضلِك...هل هو بَعيد ؟

Instructor: she answers: " no Al-nahda square is five minutes from here"

هِي:لا مَيدان النهضة عَلى بُعد خَمسِ دَقائِق مِن هُنا

Instructor: take the first street to the left

هِي: إسلُك أوَل شَارِع  إلى اليسار

هُو: قُل

Instructor: thank you very much

هُو: شُكرا ً جَزيلا ً

Instructor: now you and a colleague are discussing driving differences, she argues that in general that American drives slowly, here’s slowly

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: بِبطء ....ببطء

Instructor: how does she say slowly?

هِي: بِبطء

Instructor: how would she say they drive slowly?

هُو: إنهم يَقودُون بِبطء  .. إنهم ....يقودون... ببطء

Instructor: do you remember how to say the Americans

هُو: الأمرِيكَان.. الأمرِيكَان

Instructor: now you disagree with her saying the American don’t drive slowly

هُو: الأمرِيكَان لا يَقودُون بِبطء ....الأمريكان ....لا ....يقودون....ببطء

Instructor: but the Arabs

هِي: لَكِن العرب

هِي: لَكِن العرب

Instructor: do you remember the word for fast or quickly

هِي: بِسُرعَة.. بِسُرعَة

Instructor: they drive

هِي: إنهُم يَقودُون.....إنهم....يقودون

Instructor: how would she say but the Arab countriesn they drive fast?

هِي: لَكِن العرب يَقودُون بِسُرعَة

هِي: لَكِن العرب يَقودُون بِسُرعَة

Instructor: here’s how to say to drive…..for talking about a singular

هُو: يَقُود .. يَقُود

هُو: قُل

Instructor: I like to drive in Alexandria

هُو: أحبُ أن أقُود في الأسكندرية.. أقُود

Instructor: the Americans …. don’t drive slowly

هُو: الأمرِيكَان لا يَقودُون بِبطء

Instructor: fast

هُو:بِسُرعَة

Instructor: now here’s how to say faster

هُو: أسرَع .... أسرَع....

هُو: الأن قُل

Instructor: the Arabs drive faster

هُو: العرب يَقودُون أسرَع

Instructor: sometimes the Americans drive slowly

هُو: أحيانا ً ... الأمرِيكَان يَقودُون بِبطء

Instructor: I like to drive in Alexandria

هُو: أحبُ أن أقُود في  الأسكندرية

Instructor: faster than

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: أسرَع مِن.. مِن.. أسرَع مِن

Instructor: faster than the Americans

هُو:: أسرَع مِن الأمرِيكَان

Instructor: here’s how she says many Arabs

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: كثير من العرب........كثير من العرب

Instructor: many Arabs drive fast

هِي: كثير من العرب.... يَقودُون بِسُرعَة....كثير من العرب يقودون بسرعة

Instructor: faster than the Americans

هِي: أسرَع مِن الأمرِيكَان

هُو: قُل

Instructor: I like to drive in damascus

هُو: أحبُ أن أقُود في دِمَشق

Instructor:  but in America ……. the gas is expensive

هُو: لَكِن في أمريكا .... الجازولين غَالي

Instructor: in Arab countries the gas is cheaper

هُو: في البلاد العربية الجازولين أرخَص

Instructor: she says, yes but many Arabs don’t drive fast as well

هِي:نَعَم لَكِن ....كثير من العرب لا يَقودُون بِسُرعَة كذلك

Instructor: how does she say slowly?

هِي: بِبطء

Instructor: and many Americans don’t drive slowly as well

هُو: و كَثير مِن الأمرِيكَان لا يَقودُون بِبطء كذلك

Instructor: did you pick the phrase "as well"….listen again

هو: كذلك

هي: كذلك

Instructor: the Arabs drive faster than American’s

هِي :العرب يَقُودُون أسرَع مِن الأمرِيكَان

هُو: قُل

Instructor: but in Arab countries gas is cheaper

هُو: لَكِن في البلاد العربية البَنزين أرخَص

Instructor: than in America….

هُو: مِن أمريكا ...

Instructor: In Arab countries gas is cheaper than in America….

Instructor: she says:   Americans are not faster than Arabs

هِي: الأمرِيكَان لَيسوا أسرَع مِن العرب

Instructor: they don’t drive faster

هِي: إنهم لا يقُودُون أسرع     

Instructor: but in Arab countries gas is cheaper than in America.

هُو: لَكِن في البلاد العربية الجازولين أرخَص مِن أمريكا.

Instructor: she asks you : how much is the gas?

هِي: بِكَم البَنزين ؟؟

هِي: بِكَم البَنزين ؟؟

Instructor: you ask, where in America?

هُو: أين َ؟ .. في أمِريكا .. في أمِريكا ؟    (مطلوب لهجة السؤال)

Instructor: how would you answer that the gas is more expensive than here

هُو: البَنزين أغلى مِن هُنا.. مِن هُنا

Instructor: it’s more expensive in America than in Arab countries

هُو: إنه أغلى في أمريِكا مِن البلاد العربية

Instructor: but many Americans drive slowly

هُو: لَكِن كَثيرَ مِن الأمرِيكَان يَقودُون بِبطء.

Instructor: now you and your friend are driving to a restaurant but you’re having a trouble to find it, she says I know Al-nahda Square is five minutes from here

هِي:أنا أعرِفُ مَيدان النهضة ...عَلى بُعدِ خَمسِ دَقائِقٍ مِن هُنا

Instructor: you pull over and speak to a passer by saying are you able to help me

هُو: هَل تَستَطِعين مُساعَدَتي؟..

Instructor: I’m looking for

هِو: أنا أبحَثُ عَن

Instructor: how do you tell her you’re looking for Al-nahda Square?

هُو: أنا أبحَثُ عَن مَيدان النهضة

Instructor: how do you say that you’re looking for a restaurant in Al-nahda  Square?

هُو: أنا أبحَثُ عَن مَطعَمٍ في مَيدان النهضة

هُو: قُل

Instructor: I don’t know the address

هُو: أنا لا أعرِفُ العُنوان

Instructor: but the restaurant is in Al-nahda square

هُو: لَكِن المَطعَم في مَيدانِ النهضة

Instructor: are you able to help me?

هُو: هَل تَستَطِعين مُساعَدَتي؟

Instructor: tell her again you’re looking for star square

هُو: أنا أبحَثُ عَن مَيدانِ النهضة

Instructor: she says: yes, go straight ahead and take

هِي:نَعَم إذهَب إلى الأمَام مباشرةً  ...و اسلُك

Instructor: the first street to the left

هِي: أوَل شَارِع إلى اليسار

Instructor: thank you very much mme

هُو: شُكرا ً جَزيلا ً سَيدَتي

Instructor: she asks are you an American

هِي: هَل أنت َ أمْرِيكي؟

Instructor: when you tell her yes, she tells you to be careful saying the Arabs are driving faster than the Americans

هِي :العرب يَقُودُون أسرَعَ مِن الأمرِيكَان

Instructor:  I like to drive in Damascus

هُو: أحبُ أن أقُودَ في دِمَشق

Instructor: This is the end of unit fifty two and the end of today’s lesson
