Instructor: This is unit 53 of ALIF Classical Arabic Audio program 2, listen to this Arabic conversation.

Instructor: listen to this conversation between two friends, in this conversation you hear

هُو: طُرُق جَيدَة جِدا ً

Instructor: the roads are very good

هُو: إستَمِع

هُو: أحبُ أن أقُودَ في الأسكندرية و في البلادِ العربية الجازولينُ رخيص

هِي:نَعَم...  و كثيرٌ من العرب يَقودُون بِسُرعَة.. أسرَع مِن الأمرِيكَان

هُو: لَكِن في البلاد العربية الجازولينَ أرخَصُ مِن أمريكا

هِي: في أمِريكا الطُرُقُ جَيدةٌ جِدا ً.. لَكِنَ كَثيرًا مِن الأمرِيكَان يَقودُون بِبطء

هُو: إستَمع مَرة أُخرى

هُو: أحبُ أن أقُودَ في الأسكندرية و.... في البلاد العربية الجازولينُ رخيص

هِي:نَعَم  و كثيرٌ من العرب يَقودُون بِسُرعَة.. أسرَع مِن الأمرِيكَان

هُو: لَكِن في البلاد العربية الجازولين أرخَص مِن أمريكا

هِي: في أمِريكا الطُرُقُ جَيدةٌ جِدا ً.. لَكِنَ كَثيرًا مِن الأمرِيكَان يَقودُون ببطء

Instructor: now suppose you’re an American woman on a street in an Arab country  looking for a pharmacy but the direction you have are more confusing, a man asks ”do you want help miss”

هُو: هَل تُريدين مُساعَدَة ً سيدتي ؟

Instructor: are you able to read Arabic

هُو: هَل تَستَطيعِين أن تَقرَأي اللُغَة العَرَبِية ؟

Instructor: do you have the address

هَو: هَل مَعَكِ العُنْوان ؟

Instructor: you show him the address saying yes I want help please

هِي: نَعَم أُريِد مُساعَدَة ً

Instructor: I’m able to read Arabic

هِي: أنا أستَطيعُ أن أقرَأَ اللُغَة َ العَرَبِية

Instructor: I’m looking for

هِي: أبحَثُ عَن

Instructor: this pharmacy in Al- Thawrah Square

هِي: هَذِه الصَيدَلِية في مَيدان الثورة

Instructor: remember pharmacy is feminine, how do you ask if it’s far?

هِي: هَل هِيَ بَعيدَة ؟

هُو: قُل

Instructor: the address is right

هِي: العُنوان صَحيح

Instructor: how does he say to you that you can read Arabic Well?

هُو: أنتِ تَستَطيعِين أن تَقرَأي اللُغَة العَرَبِية جَيدا ً

Instructor: yes thank you, but I’m able to read a little Arabic

هِي: نَعَم شُكرا ً .....لكن أنا أستَطيعُ أن أقرَأ اللُغَةَ العَرَبِية قَليلا ً

Instructor: this pharmacy is in Al-Thawrah Square

هِي: هَذِه الصَيدَلِية في مَيدان الثورة

هُو: إسأَل

Instructor: is it far?

هِي: هَل هِي بَعيدَة ؟

Instructor: do you remember how to say by walking or on foot

هُو: سيرًا على الأقدام

Instructor: he says it’s five minutes on foot from here

هُو: هِي عَلى بُعدِ خَمسِ دَقائِقٍ سيرًا على الأقدام مِن هُنا

هُو: إسأَل

Instructor: are the pharmacies open?

هِي: هَل الصَيدَليات مَفتوُحَة ؟

Instructor: do you remember the word for store

هِي: متجر

Instructor: I’m looking for a store too

هِي: أنا أبحَثُ عَن متجرٍ أيضًا   

Instructor: after he gives you directions, how do you say thank you very much

هِي: شُكرا ً جَزيلا ً

Instructor: on another day a friend is driving you to the store how does he ask you are you able to help me

هُو: هَل تَستَطِيعين مُساعَدَتي؟

Instructor: I’m looking for a store

هُو: أنا أبحَثُ عَن متجر

Instructor: but I don’t see it

هُو: لَكِن لَا أراه ُ

Instructor: you think you see the store, he asks you are you able to read the address

هُو: هَل تَستَطيعِين أن تَقرَأي العُنوان ؟

Instructor: here’s how to say I will drive or I’ll drive

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: سَأقُود .. أقُود .. س...سَأقُود

Instructor: and here’s slowly

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: بِبطء.....ببطء

Instructor: say together I will drive slowly and… they will drive slowly

هُو : سَأقُود بِبطء .. سَيَقُودُون بِبطء

Instructor: now try to say I drive slowly

هِي: أنا أقُودُ بِبطء.. أنا أقُودُ بِبطء

Instructor: he tells you I will drive slowly

هُو: سَأقُودُ بِبطء ....سأقودُ ببطء

هُو: قُل

Instructor: many Arabs drive fast

هِي: عرب كَثيرُون يَقودُون بِسُرعَة

Instructor: and the gas is cheap in Arab countries.

هِي: و الجازولين رخيص في الدولِ العربية

Instructor: tell him I like to drive slowly

هِي: أحبُ أن أقُودَ بِبطء

Instructor: he says no they don’t drive fast

هُو: لا .. هُم لا يَقودُون بِسُرعَة

Instructor: you say usually

هِي: عَادَة ً

Instructor: Arabs drive faster than Americans

هِي :العرب يَقُودُون أسرَع مِن الأمرِيكَان

Instructor: but I like to drive slowly

هِي: لَكِن أنَا أحبُ أن أقُودَ بِبطء

Instructor: he says:" many Americans drive slowly"

هُو: كَثيرُ مِن الأمرِيكَان يَقودُون بِبطء

Instructor: and the gas is expensive in America

هُو: والجازولين غالي فِي أمرِيكا

Instructor: than in Arab countries

هُو: عن البلادِ العربية

Instructor: he says but sometimes the Americans are faster than Arabs

هُو: لَكِن أحبَانا ًالأمرِيكَان أسرَعُ مِن العرب

Instructor: usually Arabs drive very fast

هِي: عَادَة العرب يَقُودُون بسرعة جدًا

Instructor: but still I like to drive in Damascus

هِي: لَكِن مَازِلتُ أحبُ أن أقُودَ في دِمَشق

Instructor: after shopping you had offer a mutual friend’s house together. Here’s how to say to him” you drive fast”

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: أنتَ تَقُودُ بِسُرعَة.. تَقُودُ.. تَقُودُ بِسُرعَة

Instructor: speaking to a man how do you say to drive

هِي: تَقُود

Instructor: how do you tell him to drive fast?

هِي: أنتَ تَقُودُ بِسُرعَة

Instructor: he says many Arabs drive faster than Americans

هُو:كَثيرٌ مِن العرب يَقُودُون أسرَع مِن الأمرِيكَان

Instructor: he says I like to drive in America

هُو: أحبُ أن أقُودَ في أمِريكا

Instructor: he says in America I drive slowly

هُو: في أمِريكا أقُودُ بِبطء

Instructor: say to him but here you drive fast

هِي: لَكِن هُنا أنت َ تَقُودُ بِسُرعَة

Instructor: now how does he ask you are you able to read the address?

هُو: هَل تَستَطيعِينَ أن تَقرَأي العُنوان ؟

Instructor: he says I will drive slowly

هُو: سَأقُودُ بِبطء

Instructor: here’s how you ask him can you or are you able to

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: تَستَطَيع .. تَستَطَيع

Instructor: try to ask can you drive….to male.

هِي: هَل تَستَطَيعُ أنْ تَقُودَ ؟ .. تَقُود ..هل تَستَطَيعُ أنْ تَقُود؟

Instructor: you want to ask him to drive slowly, here’s how to say slowly to a man

هِي: بِبطء .. بِبطء  من فضلِك.

Instructor: try to ask him can you drive slowly

هِي: هَل تَستَطَيعُ أنْ تَقُودَ بِبطء ؟

Instructor: how do you say slowly when you’re talking to a man?

هِي: ببطء

Instructor: I know many Arabs drive fast

هِي: أعرِفُ كَثيرًا مِن العربِ يَقُودُون بِسُرعَة

Instructor: but are you able to drive slowly please?

هِي:لَكِن ... هَل تَستَطَيعُ أنْ تَقُودَ ببطء مِن فَضلِك ؟

Instructor: he says I will drive slowly

هُو : سَأقُودُ ببطء

Instructor: here’s how to say the streets

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي:  الشَوارِع .. الشَوارِع.. الشَوارِع

Instructor: now try to say but in these streets

هِي: لَكِن فِي هَذِهِ الشَوارِع

Instructor: you drive very fast

هِي: أنتَ تَقُودُ بِسُرعَة جِدا ً

Instructor: ask him can you drive slowly please

هِي: هَل تَستَطَيعُ أنْ تَقُودَ ببطءٍ مِن فَضلِك؟

Instructor: he says I will drive slowly

هُو : نَعَم سَأقُودُ ببطء

Instructor: do you remember how to say the route or road

هِي: الطَريِق

Instructor: try to say the correct route

هِي: الطَريِقُ الصَحيح

Instructor: he asks you:" is this the correct route?"

هُو: هَل هَذا هُو الطَريِقُ الصَحيح ؟

Instructor: ask him again can you drive slowly

هِي: هَل تَستَطَيعُ أنْ تَقُودَ ببطء ؟

Instructor: you can’t read the street numbers, here’s the word for numbers

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: أرقَام .. أرقَام .. أرقَام

Instructor: now say "the numbers"

هي: الأرقام .....الأرقام

Instructor: say that you’re not able to read numbers

هِي: لا أستَطيعُ أن أقرَأََ الأرقَام

Instructor: the numbers are small and the streets are small

هِي: الأرقَامُ صَغِيرَة و الشَوارِعُ صَغِيرَة

Instructor: and you drive very fast

هِي:و أنتَ تَقُودُ بِسُرعَةٍ جِدا ً

Instructor: ask him can you drive slowly please

هِي: هَل تَستَطَيعُ أنْ تَقُودَ ببطءٍ مِن فَضلِك؟

Instructor: how did you say that you’re not able to read numbers?

هِي: لا أستَطيعُ أن أقرَأ الأرقَام

Instructor: you are giving him directions, how does he ask “to the right?”

هُو: إلى اليَمين ؟

Instructor: tell him no take the first street to the left

هِي:لا خُذ أوَلَ شَارِع  إلى اليسار

هُو: قُل

Instructor: these streets are small

هِي: هَذِه الشَوارِع صَغِيرَة

Instructor: he asks the first street to the right or the first street to the left

هُو: أوَل شَارِع إلى اليمين أمْ  إلى اليسار ؟

Instructor: pointing, you say that’s the correct road

هِي: هَذا هُو الطَريِقُ الصَحيح

Instructor: after he turns, say now take the first street to the right

هِي:الأن  خُذ أوَلَ شَارِع  إلى اليمين

Instructor: ask him again can you drive slowly

هِي: هَل تَستَطَيعُ أنْ تَقُودَ ببطء ؟

Instructor: say that you are not able to read numbers

هِي: لا أستَطيعُ أن أقرَأ الأرقَام

Instructor: later how does he ask you are you able to help me?

هُو: هَل تَستَطِيعين مُساعَدَتي؟

Instructor: he asks is there a pharmacy

هُو: هَل توجَد هناكَ صَيدَلِية ؟

Instructor: not far from here

هُو: لَيسَت بَعيِدَة مِن هُنا

هُو: قُل

Instructor: yes there’s a pharmacy

هِي: نَعَم توجَد صَيدَلِية

Instructor: ten minutes from here by car

هِي: عَشر دَقَائِق مِن هُنا بِالسَيارَة

هِي: عَشر دَقَائِق مِن هُنا بِالسَيارَة

Instructor: on another day you want to tell a friend that your car isn’t working, first here’s how to say working, meaning right at the moment

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: تَعمَل .. تَعمَل.. تَعمَل

Instructor: how do you say my car?

هِي: سَيارَتي

Instructor: how do you tell him that your car isn’t working?

هِي: سَيارَتي لا تَعمَل

Instructor: it isn’t working well

هِي: سَيارَتي لا تَعمَلُ جَيدا ً

Instructor: how do you ask him if there’s a pharmacy isn’t far from here?

هِي: هَل توجَد صَيدَلِية لَيسَت بَعيِدَة مِن هُنا ؟

Instructor: he tells you:" yes, it’s ten minutes from here by car"

هُو: نَعَم ، إنها على بعد ِ عَشرِ دَقَائِقٍ مِن هُنا بِالسَيارَة

Instructor: but my car isn’t working

هِي: لَكِن سَيارَتي لا تَعمَل

Instructor: how did you ask him if there’s a pharmacy isn’t far from here?

هِي: هَل توجَد صَيدَلِية لَيسَت بَعيِدَة مِن هُنا ؟

Instructor: he tells you yes in Al-Thawrah square

هُو: نَعَم في مَيدان الثورَة

Instructor: maybe it’s ten minutes from here

هُو: رُبمَا على بعدِ عَشرِ دَقَائِقٍ مِن هُنا

Instructor: the pharmacy is not far from here by car

هُو: الصَيدَلِية لَيسَت بَعيِدَة مِن هُنا بِالسَيارَة

Instructor: remind him but my car isn’t working well

هِي: لَكِن سَيارَتي لا تَعمَلُ جَيدا ً

Instructor: he offers to take you… here’s the word for "to take you" or to "accompany you" when speaking to woman

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: أصحبُك .. أصحبُكِ ..أص .. أصحب  ...أصحبُكِ

Instructor: what’s the word for can, meaning I’m able to?

هُو: أستَطيِع

Instructor: now how would he say to you "I can take you"?

هُو: أنا أستَطيِعُ أن أصحبَكِ

Instructor: the pharmacies are open today

هُو: الصَيدَليات مَفتُوحَةٌ اليَوم

Instructor: he says he is able to take you

هُو: أنا أستَطيِعُ أن أصحبَكِ

Instructor: later as he drives you to the pharmacy, ask him “can you drive slowly”

هِي: هَل تَستَطَيعُ أنْ تَقُودَ ببطء ؟

Instructor: these streets are small

هِي:هَذِه الشَوارِع صَغِيرَة

Instructor: I’m not able to read numbers

هِي: لا أستَطيعُ أن أقرَأ الأرقَام

Instructor: and you drive very fast

هِي:و أنتَ تَقُودُ بِسُرعَة جدًا .. تَقُود

Instructor: he says of course I’m an Arab

هُو: بِالطَبع... أنا عربيّ.. أنا عربيّ .....ملحوظة للراوي بنطق الشدة على نهاية كلمة عربيّ

Instructor: he says I can take you

هُو: أنا أستَطيِع أن أصحبَكِ

Instructor: how does he say many Arabs drive fast?

هُو: عربٌ كَثيرُون يَقودُون بِسُرعَة

Instructor: tell him in America they drive slowly

هِي: في أمرِيكا يَقودُون ببطء.. ببطء

Instructor: and the gas is cheaper here

هِي: و الجازولينُ أرخَص هنا

Instructor: ask him can you drive slowly please

هِي: هَل تَستَطَيعُ أنْ تَقُودَ ببطءٍ مِن فَضلِك؟

Instructor: these streets are small

هِي:هَذِه الشَوارِعُ صَغِيرَة

Instructor: he says yes I will drive slowly

هُو : نَعَم سَأقُودُ ببطء.....سأقودُ ببطء

Instructor: he makes a wrong turn and stops, so you can ask for assistance. ask a woman can you help me please?

هِي: هَل تِستَطِيعين مًساعَدتي مِن فَضلِك ؟

Instructor: you show her the address and say:" I’m looking for this pharmacy"

هِي: أبحَث عَن هَذِه الصَيدَلِية

Instructor: she points to a street and says: take the first street to the left….note that they are two ladies talking to each other now.

هِي: خُذي أوَلَ شَارِع إلى اليسار

Instructor: after the pharmacy.. you want to make some shopping, your friend says I can take you to a store

هُو: أستَطيِعُ أن أصحبَكِ إلى متجر

Instructor:  the store is five minutes from here

هُو: المتجرُ عَلى بُعدِ خَمسِ دَقائِقٍ مِن هُنا

Instructor: he says and later how about we have a coffee

هُو: مَا رأيُكِ أن نَشرَبَ قَهوَة  فيما بعد ؟

Instructor: on the way to the café you continue your discussion saying many Arabs drive fast

هِي: عربٌ كَثيرُون يَقودُون بِسُرعَة

Instructor: but sometimes in America, the Americans don’t drive slowly

هِي: لَكِن أحيانًا  في أمرِيكا ، الأمريكان لا يَقودُون ببطء

Instructor: and gas in Arab countries is cheaper than in America

هُو: و الجازولين أرخَص في الدول العربية مِن أمريكا

Instructor: ask him again can you drive slowly please

هِي: هَل تَستَطَيعُ أنْ تَقُودَ ببطءٍ مِن فَضلِك؟

Instructor: he says I’m sorry I will drive slowly.

هُو : عَفوا ً سَأقُودُ ببطء .

Instructor: now you’re with a colleague, referring to your car tell him, it isn’t working

هِي: إنها لا تَعمَل.. إنها لا تَعمَل

هُو: قُل

Instructor: I drive slowly

هِي: أنا اٌقُودُ ببطء

Instructor: still referring to your car, say now it’s not working well

هِي: الأن ، هي لا تَعمَلُ جَيدا ً

Instructor: how does he say "I can take you"

هُو: أستَطيِع أن أصحبَكِ

Instructor: tell him take the first street to the right

هِي: خُذ أوَلَ شَارِع إلى اليمين   

Instructor: now ask him can you drive slowly please

هِي: هَل تَستَطَيعُ أنْ تَقُودَ ببطء مِن فَضلِك ؟

Instructor: he says I can take you to a store

هُو: أستَطيِعُ أن أصحبَكِ إلى متجر

Instructor: he adds: "but you know?"

هُو: لَكِن هَل تَعرِفين ؟

Instructor: I’m not driving slowly

هُو: أنَا لا أقُودُ ببطء

Instructor: she comments:"of course, you can’t drive slowly"

هِي: بِالطَبع أنتَ لا تَستَطيعُ أن تَقُودَ ببطء

Instructor: he says laughing:" no, I am an Arab"

هُو: لا .. أنا عربيّ  ....ملحوظة للراوي بالضحك أثناء أداء هذه الجملة

Instructor: This is the end of unit fifty three and the end of today’s lesson
