Instructor: This is unit 58 of ALIF Classical Arabic Audio program 2,

هُو: إستَمِع إلى هَذِه المُحادَثَة

هُو: نادية أنَا سَأذهَبُ إلى المصرِف في المدينة.. لابُدّ أن أستبدلَ مَالًا

هِي: حَسنا ً .. أنا سَأذهَبُ إلى المَدِينَةِ أيضا ً .. أستَطيعُ أن أصحبَكَ بِالسَيارَة

هُو: بِالسَيارَة .. حَسنا ً هَذه فِكرَةٌ جَيدَة..لَكِن أحبُ أن أذهَبَ حالا ً مِن فَضِلِك

هِي: نَعَم .. سَأذهَبُ حَالا ً

هُو: إستَمِع مَرة أُخرى

هُو: نادية أنَا سَأذهَبُ إلى المصرِف في المدينة.. لابُدّ أن أستبدلَ مَالًا

هِي: حَسنا ً .. أنا سَأذهَبُ إلى المَدِينَةِ أيضا ً .. أستَطيعُ أن أصحبَكَ بِالسَيارَة

هُو: بِالسَيارَة .. حَسنا ً هَذه فِكرَةٌ جَيدَة..لَكِن أحبُ أن أذهَبَ حالا ً مِن فَضِلِك

هِي: نَعَم .. سَأذهَبُ حَالاً

Instructor: now you’re an American speaking with an Arab

colleague, referring to you and your wife you ask would

you like to go to a movie with us.

هُو: هَل تَحبين أنْ تَذهَبي إلى الفِيلم مَعنا ؟

Instructor: you tell her about the movie say I saw it before

هُو: رأيتَه ُ مِن قَبل

Instructor: and I’d like to see it again

هُو: أحبُ أن أرَاهُ ثانيةً

Instructor: but it doesn’t matter

هُو: لَكِن... لا يَهِم

Instructor: try to say I can see it later

هُو: أستطيعُ أن أرَاهُ فيما بعد

Instructor: how does she say that she would like to
watch the movie too?

هِي: أحبُ أن أشاهدَ الفِيلم أيضا ً

Instructor: how does she say that she hasn’t seen it?

هِي: لَم أرهُ مِن قًبل

Instructor: tell her I saw it before but I’d like to see it again

هُو: رأيتَه ُ مِن قَبل لَكِن أحبُ أن أرَاهُ ثانيةً

Instructor: or would you like to talk about politics with us

هُو: أو هَل تَحبين أن تتحدثي عن السياسة مَعنا ؟

Instructor: she tells you she staying with friends and
says” I will talk about politics with them tomorrow”

هِي: سَأتحدث عن السياسة مَعَهُم غَدا ً  

Instructor: tell her my wife talks about politics very well

هُو: زَوجَتي تَتحدثُ عن السياسة جَيد جِدا ً

Instructor: better than me

هُو: أفضَلَ مِني

Instructor: she says :"really?"

هِي: حَقا ً ؟

Instructor: you confirm it saying yes that’s right but
it doesn’t matter

هُو: نَعَم ....هذا صَحِيح.... لَكِن لا يَهِم

Instructor: ask your college if she talks about sports

هُو: هَل تَتحدثين عن الرياضة ؟

Instructor: she laughs and says no I never talk
about sports

هِي: لا ...لا أتحدثُ عن الرياضةِ أبدًا

Instructor: I will talk about politics with you and
with your wife soon

هِي: سَأتحدثُ عن السياسةِ مَعكَ ومَع زَوجُكَ قَريبا ً

Instructor: now you’re speaking with another
colleague, how does she ask you when will you
been leaving to Aleppo?

هِي: مَتي سَترحلُ إلى حَلَب ؟

Instructor: tell her soon I will leave tomorrow

هُو: قَريبا ً .. سَأرحلُ غَدا ً

Instructor: checking her calendar and when will
you return

هِي: ومَتى سَتَعُود ؟

Instructor: tell her I have a meeting on Monday

هُو: لَدى إجتِمَاع في الإثنَيَن

Instructor: and another one on Tuesday
morning in Aleppo

هُو: وواحِد آخَر في الثُلاثَاء صبَاحا ً في حَلَب

Instructor: I have a lot of work there

هُو: لَدى عَمَلٌ كَثير هناك  

Instructor: you continue I have another meeting
on Wednesday in Alexandria.

هُو: لَدى إجتِمَاع آخَر في الأربِعاء في الأسكندرية

Instructor: so I won’t return until Thursday

هُو: لَذَلِك أنا لَن أعُود حَتى الخَميس

Instructor: she asks at what time you will return

هِي: فِي أي وَقت سَتَعُود ؟

Instructor: I will come back on Thursday night

هُو: سأعُودُ الخَمِيس لَيلا ً

Instructor: you want to exchange money for your
trip ask do you know where can I exchange money

هُو:هَل تَعرِفينَ أين أستطيعُ أن أستبدلَ مَالًا ؟

Instructor: she tells you there is a bank on
Abed Street

هِي: يُوجَد مصرِف في شَارِع عَابِد

Instructor: how does she say you have to
go to the town?

هِي: لابُدّ أن تَذهَبَ إلى المَدِينَة

Instructor: to say “in order to” or” for “she uses

هُي : لـِـ

Instructor: how do you say in order to
exchange money?

هُي : لِأستبدل مَالًا .. لـِـ .. لِأستبدل مَالًا

Instructor: she says to you, you can exchange money

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: تستَطِيع أن تَستبدل مَالًا.. تَستبدل.... تستَطِيع أن تَستبدل مَالًا

Instructor: she says you can exchange the
money from the bank

هِي: تستَطِيع أن تستبدل المَال مِن المصرِف

هُو: قُل

Instructor: in that case I can go to the back right away

هُو: إذا ً سَأذهَبُ إلى المصرِف حَالا ً

Instructor: in order to exchange some money

هُو: لِأستبدلَ بَعضَ المَال

Instructor: I have a meeting now
but I’m going there soon

هُو: لَدى إجتِماع الأن لَكِن سَأذهَب إلى هُناك قَريبا ً

Instructor:  do you remember the word for eleven…
.the feminine form

هُو: الحَادية عَشرة

Instructor:  try to say half past eleven

هُو: الحَادِيَة عَشرة والنِصف

Instructor:  and do you remember the word for twelve…
.the feminine form.

هُو: الثَانِية عَشرة

Instructor:  try to say twelve thirty or half past twelve

هُو: الثَانِية عَشرة والنِصف

Instructor:  say that it’s half past twelve now

هُو: إنها الثَانِية عَشرة والنِصف الأن

Instructor:  she says the meeting today is two o’clock

هِي: الإجتِمَاع اليَوم في السَاعَة الثانية

هُو: قُل

Instructor:  so I have to go to the bank right away

هُو: لِذَلِك لَابُدّ أن أذهَبَ إلى المصرِف حَالا ً

Instructor:  in order to exchange the money before the meeting

هُو: لِأستبدلَ المَال قَبل الإجتِمَاع

Instructor:  another college asks you is the
meeting at half past eleven today

هِي: الإجتِمَاع في السَاعَة الحَادِيَة عَشرة والنِصف اليَوم

Instructor:  you check and say the first meeting
is at half past twelve

هُو: أول إجتِمَاع في السَاعَة الثَانِية عَشرة والنِصف

Instructor:  and after the meeting

هُو: وبَعد الإجتِمَاع

Instructor:  I can exchange the money at the bank

هُو: أستَطِيعُ أن أستبدلَ مَالًا مِن المصرِف

Instructor:  she needs to go too she says really

هِي: حَقا ً ؟

Instructor: how do you tell her that’s right
I’m going to the bank?

هُو: نَعَم صَحِيح سَأذهَبُ إلى المصرِف .. صَحِيح

Instructor: remembering that you’re speaking to a woman
try to say you can exchange the money from the bank too

هُو: تَستَطيعين أن تستبدلي مَالًا مِن المصرِف أيضا ً

Instructor: she says that she has to go to the bank

هِي: لَابُدّ أن أذهَبَ إلى المصرِف

Instructor: say to her in that case how about we go together

هُو: إذا ً مَا رأيُكِ أن نَذهَبَ معا ً ؟

Instructor: I can take you in my car

هُو: أستَطيعُ أن أصحبَك بِسيَارَتي

Instructor: later you stop in a book shop and meet a
good friend; referring to a woman she says I want to
buy this book to my friend

هِي: أُريدُ أن أشتَريَ هَذا الكِتاب لِصدِيقَتي ؟

Instructor: she tries to read the price, is it four
hundred pounds

هِي: هَل هُو بأربَعِ مَائة جُنِيه ؟

Instructor: note this new form of currency….pound

هو: جنيه

Instructor: the price is not marked clearly;
she asks the clerk how much is this book?

هِي: بِكَم هَذا الكِتاب ؟

Instructor: is it three hundred pounds or four
hundred pounds

هِي: هَل هُو بأربَع مَائة جُنِيه أم بِثلاث مائَة جُنيه ؟

Instructor: he tells her; ah this book is very nice

هُو: آه ... هَذا الكِتاب جَيد جِدا ً

Instructor: it’s four hundred pounds for you

هُو: بأربَع مَائة جُنِيه لَكِ

Instructor: she shows him another saying and
another book for my daughter

هِي: وكِتابٌ آخَر لإبنَتي

Instructor: the clerk says it’s three hundred pounds

هُو: بِثلاثِ مائَةِ جُنيه

Instructor: he says these books are very beautiful

هُو: هَذه الكُتُبُ جَمِيلَةٌ جِدا ً

Instructor: your friend says I’m sorry but I
don’t have enough money with me

هِي: أسفَة لا يُوجَد مَعي مَال كَافِي

Instructor: she continues I want to buy these books

هِي: أُريدُ أن أشتَريَ هَذِه الكُتُب

Instructor: she figures out what she needs saying
four hundred pounds and three hundred pounds

هِي: بأربَع مَائة جُنِيه وبِثلاث مائَة جُنيه

Instructor: in order to buy these books

هِي: لِأشتَريَ هَذِه الكُتُب

Instructor: she shows you what she has and says
I don’t have enough money with me

هِي: لا يُوجَد مَال كَافِي معي

Instructor: remembering that you’re speaking to the
woman say “you can exchange money at the bank”

هُو: تَستَطيعين أن تستبدلي مَالًا عند المصرِف

Instructor: she says that’s right in order to
exchange money

هِي: هَذا صَحِيح ...لأستبدلَ المَال

Instructor: I will go to the bank

هِي: سَأذهَبُ إلى المصرِف

هُو:قُل

Instructor: you can exchange money there right away

هُو: تَستَطيعينَ أن تستبدلي مَالًا هناك حالًا

Instructor: and come back in order to buy these books

هُو: وتَعُودى لِتَشتَريَ هَذِه الكُتُب

Instructor: later you say the restaurant
Al-mashawy is not far from here

هُو: المشاوي

هُو: مَطعَم المشاوي لَيس بَعيدا ً عن هُنا

Instructor: you want to suggest she joining you and
your wife for lunch, here’s how to say to a woman
“to have lunch” meaning you have lunch

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: تَتَناولِينَ الغَداَء .. تَتَــ .. تَتَناولِين .. تَتَناولِينَ الغَداَء

Instructor: ask her would you like to have lunch

هُو: هَل تَحبين أن تَتَناولِي الغَداَء ؟

Instructor: with me and with my wife

هُو: مَعي ومَع زَوجِي

Instructor: you want to tell her that Arabian food
is very tasty, first here’s the word for Arabian
when referring to food

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: عربي .. بي .. عربي

Instructor: and you remember how to say I eat

هُو: أنا أأكُل .. أأكُل

Instructor: the word for food is almost the same

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: أكْل .. أكْل .. أكُل

Instructor: the word for tasty is the same as
alright, try to say tasty

هُو: لَذِيذ .. لَذِيذ

Instructor: now try to say tasty Arabian food
literally food Arabian tasty

هُو: أكُلٌ عربيٌّ لَذِيذ

هُو: أكُلٌ عربيٌّ لَذِيذ

Instructor: do you remember how to say at their place

هُو: عندهُم

Instructor: that also means they have, try to
say they have tasty Arabian food

هُو: عندهُم أكُلٌ عربيٌّ لَذِيذ.. عندهُم

Instructor: ask would you like to have lunch with
me and with my wife

هُو: هَل تحبين أن تَتَناولِي الغَداَء هُناك مَعي ومَع زَوجِي

Instructor: your friend says I’m sorry but today
I don’t have time

هِي: أنا آسفَة لَكِن اليَوم لَا يُوجَد لَدى وقت

Instructor: I know the restaurant Al-mashawy

هِي: أعرَف مَطعَم المشاوي

Instructor: and yes they have a very tasty Arabian food

هِي: ونَعَم .. عندهُم أكُلٌ عربيٌّ لَذِيذ

Instructor: but I have a meeting at half
past twelve today

هِي: لَكِن لَدى إجتِمَاع في السَاعَة الثَانِية عَشرة والنِصف

Instructor: another meeting at half past two

هِي: وإجتِمَاع آخر في السَاعَة الثانية و النصف

Instructor: and another one at half past three

هِي: وواحِد آخَر في السَاعَة الثَالِثَة والنَصف

Instructor: she tells you I’m sorry I would like
to have lunch at Al-mashawy

هِي: أنا أسفَة .. أحب أن أتنَاوَلَ الغَداء عند المشاوي

Instructor: they have very tasty Arabian food

هِي: لَدَيهُم أكُلٌ عربيٌّ لَذِيذ

Instructor: but today I can’t

هِي: لَكِن اليَوم لا أستَطِيع

Instructor: now you’re speaking with an acquaintance
who is leaving on a trip, ask her when she will leave?

هُو: مَتى سَترحلين؟

هُو: مَتى سَترحلين؟

Instructor: she answers I will leave for Aleppo
tomorrow morning

هِي: سَأُرحلُ إلى حَلَب غَدا ً صَبَاحا ً

Instructor: how do you ask her can you return on Friday?

هُو: هَل تَستَطِيعِين العَودَة في الجُمُعَة ؟؟

Instructor: how would she say yes I would like to come
back on Thursday Night?

هِي: نَعَم أحب أن أعُودَ في الخَمِيس لَيلا ً

Instructor: but I have a lot of work there

هِي: لَكِن لَدى عَمَلًأ كَثيرًا هُناك

Instructor: you tell her about a restaurant you know
in Aleppo, you say before I went to Tabboula restaurant

هُو: مِن قَبل ذَهبتُ إلي مَطعَم تبولة

Instructor: they have very tasty Arabian food

هُو: عندهُم أكُلٌ عربيٌّ لَذِيذ

Instructor: she knows it too; she says I will
go there with my friends

هِي: سَأذهَبُ إلى هُناك مَع أصدِقائي

Instructor: she says but I have a lot of work
in Aleppo too

هِي: لَكِن لَدى عَمَلًأ كَثيرًا في حَلَب أيضا ً

Instructor: I have a meeting on Wednesday

هِي: لَدى إجتِمَاع في الأربِعَاء

Instructor: and another one on Thursday morning

هِي: وواحِدٌ آخَر في الخَمِيس صَباحا ً

Instructor: Thursday night I will see my
friends at the restaurant Al-mashawy

هِي: في الخَمِيس لَيلا ً سَأرَى أصدِقائي في مَطَعَم المشاوي

Instructor: you approve saying yes they have a
very tasty Arabian food

هُو:نَعَم عندهُم أكُلٌ عربيٌّ لَذِيذ

Instructor: ask her how she is going to Aleppo

هُو: كَيفَ سَتذهَبين إلى حَلَب ؟

Instructor: you want to ask if she is going to fly
or literally go by plane, here’s the Arabic word for plane

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو:طَائِرَة .. الطَائِرَة  

Instructor:  here’s how to ask a woman “would you fly”

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: هَل ستطيرين بالطَائِرَة.. سَتطيرين.. سَتطيرِين.. هَل سَتطيرين بالطَائِرَة ؟

Instructor: ask her if she will take the plane

هُو: هَل سَتأخذين الطَائِرَة ؟

هُو: هَل سَتأخذين الطَائِرَة؟

Instructor: she answers no I will take the train,
here’s how to say the train

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: القِطَار .. طَار .. قِطَار .. القِطَار

Instructor: how would you ask her if she will
take the train?

هُو: هَل سَتأخذينَ القِطَار ؟

هُو: هَل سَتأخذينَ القِطَار ؟

Instructor: or will you fly?

هُو: أمْ سَتطيرينَ بالطَائِرَة؟

Instructor: how would she say I won’t take
the plane?

هِي: لَن أخُذَ الطَائِرَة

Instructor: next week I will take the train

هِي: الإسبُوع القَادِم سَأخُذُ القِطَار

Instructor: but in February I will take the
plane again

هِي: لَكِن في فِبراير سَأخُذُ الطَائِرَة ثانيةً

Instructor: she says "this time"

هِي: هَذِه المَرَة

Instructor: how would she say this time
I will take the train

هِي: هَذِه المَرَة سَأخُذُ القِطَار

Instructor: try to say by train

هِي: بِالقِطَار.. بِالــ .. بِالقِطَار

Instructor: she says I will take the train to
Aleppo this time

هِي: سَأخُذُُ القِطَار إلى حَلَب هَذِه المَرَة

Instructor: how would she say I like to travel by train?

هِي: أحبُ أن أسافرَ بِالقِطَار

Instructor: I don’t like to drive

هِي: لا أحبُ أن أقُود

Instructor: and I don’t want to take the plane

هِي: ولا أحبُ أن أخُذَ الطَائِرَة

Instructor: by train Aleppo is five hours away from
Damascus, how does she say I have the time
to take the train

هِي: لدى الوَقت كي أخُذَ القِطَار .. أخُذ

Instructor: I can read a book

هِي: أستَطِيعُ أن أقرأ كِتابًا

Instructor: and perhaps another one

هِي: و ربما واحِدٌ أخَر

Instructor: try to ask her can you return by train?

هُو: هَل تَستَطِيعِينَ العَودَة بِالقَطَار ؟

Instructor: or will you take the plane

هُو: أمْ سَتطيرين بالطَائِرَة؟

Instructor: how would she say yes I will
come back by plane?

هِي: نَعَم سَأعُودُ بِالطَائِرَة.. بِالطـائرة .. نَعَم سَأعُودُ بِالطَائِرَة

Instructor: she says on Friday at half past eleven

هِي: في الجُمعَة في السَاعَة الحَادِيَة عَشرة والنِصف

Instructor: she corrects herself no at half past twelve

هِي: لا .. في السَاعَة الثَانِية عَشرة والنِصف

Instructor: on Friday I don’t have much time

هِي: في الجُمعَة لَيس لَدى الَوقت الكَثِير

Instructor: she says so on Friday I won’t take the train

هِي: لِذَلِك في الجُمعَة لَن أخُذَ القِطَار

هُو: إسأل

Instructor: do you like to travel by plane

هُو: هَل تُحبِين أن تسافري بِالطَائِرة؟

Instructor: how would she answer no not
much but it doesn’t matter

هِي: لا لَيس كَثيرا ً .. لَكِن لا يَهِم .. لَيس كَثيرا ً

Instructor: how did you ask her if she will
take the plane?

هُو: هَل سَتطيرين بالطَائِرَة؟

Instructor: she tells you yes then you ask
“what time will you return”

هُو: في أى وَقْت سَتَعُودِين.. في أى وَقْت سَتَعُودِين؟

Instructor: she answers I will come back
at half past twelve

هِي: سَأعُود في السَاعَة الثَانِية عَشرة والنِصف .. الثَانِية عَشرة والنِصف

هُو: قُل

Instructor: alright have a good trip

هُو: حَسنا ً .. تَصحَبُكِ السَلامَة

Instructor: This is the end of unit fifty eight and the end of today’s lesson
