هُو: دار الخيّالة

Instructor: the cinema

هُو: إستَمِع

هُو: هدى ..أنا و زَوجِي سَنَذهَبُ إلى حَفلَة يَوم الجُمُعَة.. هَل تحبين أن تأتي مَعنا ؟

هِي: نَعَم أُحِب .. هَذِه فكَرَةٌ جَيدَة .. أين الحَفلَة ؟

هُو: عَظِيم.... الحَفلَة بِدار الخيالة في السَاعَة الثَامِنَة

هِي: حَسنا ً السَاعَة الثَامِنَة

هُو: إستَمع مَرة أُخرى

هُو: هدى ..أنا و زَوجِي سَنَذهَبُ إلى حَفلَة يَوم الجُمُعَة.. هَل تحبين أن تأتي مَعنا ؟

هِي: نَعَم أُحِب .. هَذِه فكَرَةٌ جَيدَة .. أين الحَفلَة ؟

هُو: عَظِيم.... الحَفلَة بِدار الخيالة في السَاعَة الثَامِنَة

هِي: حَسنا ً السَاعَة الثَامِنَة

Instructor: now you’re at an evening conference and

meet an Arab acquaintance, how do you greet her?

هُو: مِسَاءُ الخَير .. مِسَاءُ الخَير

Instructor: and how might she respond to your greeting

هِي: عمتَ مساءً...... مساء الخير ....مساء الخير.....عمتَ مساءً

Instructor: as you’re talking ask her if she knows

where is the bank?

هُو:هَل تَعرِفينَ أينَ المصرِف؟

Instructor: she answers yes there is a bank on Abed street

هِي:نَعَم .. يُوجَد مصرِف في شَارِع عَابِد

Instructor: how does she say to you, you can

exchange money there?

هِي: تستَطِيعُ أن تستبدل المَال هُناك

Instructor: someone else joins you, when she says

good evening, how you greet her in return

هُو: مِسَاء الخَير.. الخَير

Instructor: later you’re in a café, how does the woman

at the counter ask if you would like to drink something?

هِي: هَل تحبُ أن تَشرَب شَيئا ً؟

Instructor: yes, do you have mineral water?

هُو: نَعَم .. هَل عندك مِياه مَعدَنِية؟ .. مِياه مَعدَنِية.. هَل عندك مِياه مَعدَنِية؟  

Instructor: what is the word for water?

هُو: مِياه

Instructor: she says:" of course, what do

you like water or tea?

هِي: نَعَم بِالتَأكِيد .. ماذا تريد .. مِياهً أمْ شَايًا ؟.. مِياه أمْ شَاي....مياهً ...أم شايًا ؟

Instructor: tell her mineral water please

هُو: مِياه مَعدَنِية مِن فَضلِك

Instructor: as you’re discussing a well-known logo

restaurant, she says they have a very tasty Arab food

هِي: عندهُم أكُلٌ عربيٌّ لَذِيذ

Instructor: tell her yes I went there last week

هُو: ذَهبتُ إلى هُناك الإسبُوع المَاضي

Instructor: now you stop in a bookshop near your

office and meet a colleague, she tells you I want

to buy a few books for my husband

هِي: أُريد أن أشتَريَ بَعضَ الكُتُبِ لِزَوجِي

Instructor: as you’re browsing, you see a book and

say this book is very old

هُو: هَذا الكِتاب قَدِيم جِدا ً

Instructor: she’s found some; she says I want to

buy these books

هِي: أُريدُ أن أشتَريَ هَذِه الكُتُب

Instructor: but I don’t have enough money with me

هِي: لَكِن لا يُوجَد مَعي مَال كَافِي

Instructor: the shopkeeper tells her there is a bank over there

هُو: يُوجَد مصرِف هُناك

Instructor: you can exchange money there

هُو: تَستَطيعين أن تستبدلي مَالًا هُناك

Instructor: the shopkeeper points one out and says

this book is very old and very beautiful

هُو: هَذا الكِتاب قَدِيم جِدا ً وجَميل جِدا ً

Instructor: she says great I’m going to the bank now

هِي: عَظِيم سَأذهَب إلى المصرِف الآن

Instructor: in order to exchange money

هِي: لِأصرِفَ بَعضَ المَال

Instructor: tell her yes you can exchange money

there right away

هُو: نَعَم ..تَستَطيعين أن تستبدلي مَالًا هُناك الآن

Instructor: this book is very old and very beautiful

هُو: هَذا الكِتاب قَدِيم جِدا ً وجَميل جِدا ً

Instructor: but it’s half past eleven now

هُو: لَكِن السَاعَة الحَادِيَة عَشرة والنِصف

Instructor: and we have a lot of meetings today

هُو: لَدِينا إجتِمَاعَات كَثِيرَة اليَوم

Instructor: the first is … at one o’clock in the afternoon

هُو: الأول ... السَاعَة الواحِدة مَساءا ً

Instructor: she says yes I will leave right away

هِي: نَعَم سَأرحلُ الأن

Instructor: later back at the office she guides her a

new book to another colleague, how does she say

“this book is very old”

هِي: هَذا الكِتاب قَدِيم جِدا ً

Instructor: now how does she say last week she

went to Aleppo?

هِي: ذَهبتُ إلى حَلَب الإسبُوع المَاضي

Instructor: I had a lot of meetings there too

هِي:كَان لَدِي إجتِمَاعَات كَثِيرَة أيضا ً

Instructor: two on Tuesday

هِي: إثنَان يَوم الثُلاثَاء.. إثنَان يَوم الثُلاثَاء

Instructor: and another one on Wednesday

هِي: وواحِد آخَر يَوم الأربِعَاء

Instructor: at three o’clock in the afternoon

هِي: السَاعَة الثَالِثَة مَساءا ً

هُو: قُل

Instructor: I know a lot of meetings

هُو: أعرِف إجتِماعَات كَثِيرَة

Instructor: she continues but I ate at a

good restaurant last week

هِي: لَكِن أكلتُ في مَطعَم جَيد الإسبُوع المَاضي

Instructor: she tells you the name and you say

they have a very taste Arab food

هُو: عندهُم أكُلٌ عربيًّ لَذِيذ

Instructor: ask her did you go by train?

هُو: هَل ذَهَبتِ بِالقطَار ؟

Instructor: she says no I went by plane last week

هِي: لا.. ذَهبتُ بِالطَائِرَةِ الإسبُوع المَاضي

Instructor: I didn’t have the time to go by train

هِي: ما كان لدىّ الوَقت للذهابِ بالقِطَار

Instructor: she continues but I ate at a good

restaurant last week

هِي: لَكِن أكلتُ في مَطعَم جَيد الإسبُوع المَاضي

Instructor: she says next week I have to go

to Lattakia

هِي: الإسبُوع القَادِم لابُدّ أن أذهَبَ إلى اللاذِقية

Instructor: tell her you have a lot of meetings in

Lattakia

هُو: لَدِيكِ إجتِمَاعَات كَثيَرة في اللاذِقية

Instructor: she says I will return on Friday

هِي: سَأعُودُ يَوم الجُمعَة

Instructor: at three o’clock in the

afternoon

هِي: السَاعَة الثَالِثَة مَساءا

Instructor: ask her if she will take the train

هُو: هَل سَتأخذِينَ القطَار ؟

Instructor: she says I will take the train to

Lattakia

هِي: نَعَم ..سَأخُذُ القِطَار إلى اللاذِقية

Instructor: Lattakia is far from here

هِي: اللاذِقية بَعِيدَةٌ مِن هُنا .. اللاذِقية بَعِيدَةٌ مِن هُنا

Instructor: now a friend and her husband have

moved and you want to get directions to their

new place, here’s how to ask

“how does one go to your place”

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: كَيف للمرء أن يَذهَبَ إلَيكُم؟ .. يَذهَب.. يَذهَب.. كَيف للمرء أن يَذهَبَ إلَيكُم ؟

Instructor: how does one go, literally how

for the one goes

هُو: كَيف للمرء أن يَذهَبَ؟ .. كَيف للمرء أن يَذهَبَ؟

هُو: إسأل

Instructor: how does one go to your place?

هُو: كَيف للمرءِ أن يَذهَبَ إلَيكُم؟

Instructor: your friend asks you :"are you coming by bus?"

هِي: هَل سَتأتي بِالحَافِلَة ؟

هِي: هَل سَتأتي بِالحَافِلَة ؟

Instructor: do you remember how to say

take the first street to the left

هُو: إسلُك أول شَارِع إلى اليَسار   

Instructor: now how does she say take the bus?

هِي: اركَب الحَافِلَة  

Instructor: until Al-Shohadaa square

هُو: مَيدان الشهداء

هِي: إلى مَيدان الشهداء.. مَيدان الشهداء

Instructor: you stop her saying now

I’m going on foot right?

هُو: الأن أذهبُ سيرًا على الأقدام  .. صحيح ؟

Instructor: she answers yes until

Al-Shohadaa square

هِي: نَعَم إلى مَيدان الشهداء.. إلى مَيدان الشهداء

Instructor: not far from there

هِي: لَيس بَعيدا ً من هُناك

Instructor: she continues, take Abed Street

هِي: إسلُك شَارِع عَابِد

Instructor: then take the first right

هِي: ثُم إسلُك أول يَمين

Instructor: to Al-tahrir street

هُو: شَارِع التحرير

هِي: إلى شَارِع التحرير .... شَارِع التحرير.. شَارِع التحرير

Instructor: how does she say, we live

in Al-Tahrir Street

هِي: نَحنُ نَسكُنُ في شَارِع التحرير

هِي: نَحنُ نَسكُنُ في شَارِع التحرير  

Instructor: now what’s the word for one hundred?

هُو: مَائة.. مَائة

Instructor: and how do you say and twenty three

هُو: وثَلاثة وعِشرُون.. وثَلاثة وعِشرُون

Instructor: how does she say again that

they live in Al-tahrir Street?

هِي: نَحنُ نَسكُن في شَارِع التحرير

Instructor: how would she tell you the number is

one hundred and twenty three?

هِي: مَائة وثَلاثة وعِشرُون .. مَائة وثَلاثة وعِشرُون

Instructor: here’s how she says our address

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: عُنْواننُا .. نُا.. وانُنا .. عُنواننُا

Instructor: she says our address is

هِي: عُنواننُا

Instructor: one hundred and

twenty three Al-Tahrir Street

هِي: مَائة وثَلاثة وعِشرُون شَارِع التحرير

Instructor: you might take your car, so referring to

their place you ask, how does one get to your place?

هُو: كَيف للمرء أن يَذهَب إلَيكُم؟.. هُو: كَيف للمرء أن يَذهَب إلَيكُم؟؟

Instructor:  from Al-shohadaa square

هُو: من ميدان الشهداء

هُو: مِن ميدان الشهداء .. مِن ميدان الشهداء

Instructor: she gets out the map, here’s the word for map

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هِي: خَرِيطَة .. الخَرِيطَة.. خَرِيطَة

Instructor: how would she say here’s the map?

هِي: هَذه هِي الخَرِيطَة.. خَرِيطَة

Instructor: still referring to their place ask how

does one get to your place by car

هُو: كَيف للمرءِ أن يَذهَبَ إلَيكُم بِالسَيارَة ؟

هُو: كَيف للمرء أن يَذهَبَ إلَيكُم بِالسَيارَة ؟

Instructor:  how to say one moment

هِي: لَحظَة واحدة.. لَحظَة واحدة

Instructor: say the word "moment"

هو: لحظة .....لحظة

Instructor: then the word "one" in feminine form

هو : واحدة .....واحدة

لحظة واحدة

Instructor: she says one moment here’s the map

هِي: لَحظَة واحدة .... هَذه هِي الخَرِيطَة

Instructor: she says our address is one hundred and

twenty three Al-Tahrir Street

هِي: عُنواننُا مَائة وثَلاثة وعِشرُون شَارِعُ التحرير

Instructor: here’s how to ask her can you

guide me on the map?

هُو : إسْتَمِع و أعِد

هُو: هَل تَستَطِيعِينَ أن تُرشِدِيني عَلى الخَرِيطَة ؟ تُرشِدِيني.. يِني .. تُرشــ .. تُرشِدِيني ..

هُو: هَل تَستَطِيعِينَ أن تُرشِدِيني عَلى الخَرِيطَة؟  

Instructor: she says I can guide you

هِي: أستَطِيع أن أُرشِدَكَ.. أُرشِدَكَ.. أرشِـ .. أُرشِدكَ

هِي: أستَطِيع أن أُرشِدكَ

Instructor: how would she say I can guide you

on the map?

هِي: أستَطِيعُ أن أُرشِدَكَ عَلى الخَرِيطَة.. عَلى الخَرِيطَة

هِي: أستَطِيعُ أن أُرشِدكَ عَلى الخَرِيطَة..

Instructor: she says here’s the map

هِي: هَذه هِي الخَرِيطَة

Instructor: I can guide you

هِي: أستَطِيعُ أن أُرشِدَكَ

Instructor: guideing you and says take

Al-Tahrir street

هِي: إسلُك شَارِع التحرير

Instructor: then take this street to Al-shohadaa Street

هِي: ثُم إسلُك هَذا الشَارِع إلى شَارِع الشهداء

Instructor: you ask her if there is a bank nearby,

and she replies yes there is a bank on Abed Street

هِي:نَعَم .. يُوجَد مصرِف في شَارِع عَابِد .. في شَارِع عَابِد

Instructor: how does she say to you, you can

exchange money there?

هِي: تستَطِيعُ أن تستبدلَ المَال هُناك

هُو: اسأل

Instructor: what time is it?

هُو: كَم السَاعَة ؟

Instructor: she tells you that it is eleven thirty

هِي:السَاعَة الحَادِيَة عَشرة والنِصف

Instructor: you and your wife have plans to meet

for lunch, how would you ask your friend would

you like to have lunch with us?

هُو: هَل تحبين أن تَتَناولِي الغَداَء مَعنا ؟

هُو: اسأل

Instructor: with me and with my wife?

هُو: مَعي ومَع زَوجِي

Instructor: how does she say great we can

have lunch in town?

هِي: عَظِيم .. نَستَطِيعُ أن نَتنَاوَلَ الغَداء في المَدِينَة

Instructor: at half past twelve

هِي: في السَاعَة الثَانِية عَشرة والنِصف

Instructor: and I can go to the bank

هِي: وأستَطِيعُ أن أذهَبَ إلى المصرِف

Instructor: tell her on Sunday I’m going

to Lattakia

هُو: يَوم الأحَد سَأذهَبُ إلى اللاذِقِية

Instructor: referring to man say in order to

see my colleague

هُو: لِأرى زَميلي .. لِأرى زَميلي

Instructor: we have some meeting on

Monday and Tuesday

هُو: لًدِينا إجتِمَاعات يَوم الإثنَين والثُلاثاء

Instructor: I have a lot of work before Sunday

هُو: لَدى عَمل كَثير قَبل الأحَد

Instructor: you having some friends over

before your trip, ask her would you like to

have lunch with us

هُو: هَل تَحبينَ أن تَتَناولِي الغَداَء مَعنا؟

Instructor: at our place on Saturday

هُو: عندنا في السَبت .. عندنا في السَبت

Instructor: at three o’clock in the afternoon

هُو: السَاعَة الثَالِثَة مَساءًا

Instructor: she says great, we will have

lunch at three

هِي: عَظِيم .. سَنتنَاوَل الغَداء السَاعَة الثَالِثَة

Instructor: tell her our address is

هُو: عُنْواننُا هُو

Instructor: three Al-Tahrir Street

هُو: ثَلاثَة شَارِع التحرير. ثَلاثَة شَارِع التحرير

Instructor: you have a map with you and you

guide her where it is, she and her husband

have recently moved while the map is out you ask

her how does the one go to your place?

هُو: كَيف للمرءِ أن يَذهَبَ إلَيكُم؟

Instructor: ask her if she can guide you on the map

هُو: هَل تَستَطِيعِين أن تُرشِدِيني عَلى الخَرِيطَة؟

Instructor: how does she tell you

of course I can guide you?

هِي:نَعَم بِالطَبع .. أستَطِيعُ أن أُرشِدَكَ

Instructor: she says our address is one

hundred and twenty three Al-Tahrir Street

هِي: عُنواننُا ..مَائة وثَلاثة وعِشرُون شَارِع التحرير

Instructor: ask her again to guide you on the map

هُو: هَل تَستَطِيعِين أن تُرشِدِيني عَلى الخَرِيطَة؟

Instructor: now she tells you she’s leaving for Homs

on Monday, how do you ask her

” would you take the plane?”

هُو: هَل سَتأخذِينَ الطَائِرَة ؟

Instructor: how does she say that she

likes to travel by train?

هِي: أحبُ أن أسافَر بِالقِطَار

Instructor: she says but this time

I will take the plane

هِي: : لَكِن هَذِه المَرَة سَأخُذُ الطَائِرَة

Instructor: I have a lot of meetings there

هِي: لَدِي إجتِمَاعَاتٌ كَثِيرَة هُناك

Instructor: he needs to drop of some books

at their place later, ask again how one goes to your place.

هُو: كَيف للمرءِ أن يَذهَبَ إلَيكُم؟

Instructor: ask her can you guide me on the map?

هُو: هَل تَستَطِيعِين أن تُرشِدِيني عَلى الخَرِيطَة؟

Instructor: she says of course I can guide you

هِي:نَعَم بِالطَبع .. أستَطِيعُ أن أُرشِدك

Instructor: the word for look is the same

as the word you know for see, try to say look

هِي: أنظُر .. أنظُر  

Instructor: she gets out the map and say,

look Al-shohadaa square is here

هِي: أنظُر مَيدَان الشهداء هُنا .. أنظُر مَيدَان الشهداء هُنا

Instructor: first take Al-Tahrir Street

هِي: أولًا... إسلُك شَارِع التحرير

Instructor:  look we live here

هِي: أنظُرنحنُ نَسكُن هُنا.. نحنُ نَسكُن هُنا

هُو: قُل

Instructor: ah yes I see it

هُو: آه نَعَم أراهُ .. أراهُ

Instructor: now you’re attending an evening

conference in Aleppo and you’re running to a

woman you have met before, greet her

good evening Huda

هُو: مَساءُ الخَيرِ يا هدى

Instructor: she greets you in return

هِي: عمت َ مساءً ....عمتَ مساءً

Instructor: a service’s coming by; ask her

do you have any mineral water?

هُو: هَل عندكِ مِياه مَعدَنِية ؟

Instructor: she says yes of course

هِي: نَعَم بِالطَبع

Instructor: tell her I’d like mineral water please

هُو: أرِيدُ مِياهً مَعدَنِيةً مِن فَضلِك

Instructor: it’s been a while since your acquaintance

has seen you and she comments,

you speak Arabic very well now

هِي: أنت َ تتَحَدَثُ اللُغَةَ العَرَبيةَ جَيد جِيدا ً الآن

هُو: قُل

Instructor: thank you I still don’t speak a lot

هو: شُكرا ً .. ما زلتُ لا أتحَدثُ كَثيرا ً

Instructor: now try to say but I speak better now

هُو: لَكِن أتحَدَثُ أفضَلَ الآن.

Instructor: your acquaintance with her

husband and you would like to see him too,

suggest may be we will have dinner together

Sunday evening

هُو: ربما نستطيعُ أن نَتنَاوَلَ العَشاء معًا الأحَد مَساءً    

Instructor: me and you and your husband

هُو: أنَا وأنتِ و زَوجُكِ

Instructor: she says that’s a good idea

هِي: هَذِه فِكرَةٌ جَيدَة

Instructor: you suggest how about going

to Al-Mashawy restaurant

هُو: مَا رأيُكِ أن نَذهَبَ إلى مَطعَم المشاوي ؟

Instructor: she says they have a tasty Arab food

هِي: عندهُم أكُلٌ عربيٌ لَذِيذ

Instructor: but how about you come

over to our place?

هِي: مَا رأيُكَ أن تأتِيَ إلَينا ؟

Instructor: we have tasty Arab food too

هِي: عندنا أكُلٌ عربيٌّ لَذِيذ أيضا ً

Instructor: you say:" ok, but how

does one go to your place?"

هُو: حَسنا ً... لَكِن كَيف للمرءِ أن يَذهَبَ إلَيكُم؟

Instructor: you have a guide book on a map.

Ask him can you guide me on the map?

هُو: هَل تَستَطِيعِين أن تُرشِدِيني عَلى الخَرِيطَة؟  

Instructor: she says of course I can guide you

هِي:نَعَم بِالطَبع .. أستَطِيعُ أن أُرشِدَكَ

Instructor: she says our address is one

hundred and twenty three Al-Tahrir Street

هِي: عُنواننُا ..مَائة وثَلاثة وعِشرُون شَارِعُ التحرير

Instructor: you’re pleased to be invited to their

home, tell her thanks a lot

هُو: شُكرا ً جَزيلا ً

Instructor: she says, you speak Arabic

very well now

هِي: أنت َ تتَحَدَثُ اللُغَة العَرَبيةَ جَيد جِيدا ً الأن
