Instructor : MR Clark is speaking to MRs Rana

هي : يَا أخ كلَارك مَتَى وَصَلتَ إِلَى دِمَشْقَ ؟

هو : البَارِحَة لَيلاً  ، الساعة العاشرة ، اِبْنِي مَعَي ، اِبْنِي الكَبِير

هي : مَاذَا فَعَلْتَ اليَومَ مَعَ ابنِكَ ؟

هو : ذَهبْنَا إِلَى الجَامِعَ الأُمَويّ

هي : حقاً ؟ هَلْ أحَبَّ ابنُك الجَامِعَ الأُمَويّ  ؟

هو : نَعَم أحبَّه كَثيراً

Instructor : She asked

هي : هَلْ أحَبَّ ابنُك الجَامِعَ الأُمَويّ؟

Instructor : Did your son like the Omayyad
mosque ?

Instructor : MR Clark responded

هو : أَحبَّه كَثيرَاً

Instructor : He likes it a lot

هو :استمِعَ مَرَّةً أُخرَى :

هي : يَا أخ كلَارك مَتَى وَصَلتَ إِلَى دِمَشْقَ ؟

هو : البَارِحَة لَيلاً  ، الساعة العاشرة ، اِبْنِي مَعَي ، اِبْنِي الكَبِير

هي : مَاذَا فَعَلْتَ اليَومَ مَعَ ابنِكَ ؟

هو : ذَهبْنَا إِلَى الجَامِعَ الأُمَويّ

هي : حقاً ؟ هَلْ أحَبَّ ابنُك الجَامِعَ الأُمَويّ  ؟

هو : نَعَم أحبَّه كَثيراً

Instructor : Now you are an American man in a café
in Damascus speaking with Rana , how does she ask
you did you eat this morning?

هي : هَلْ أكلتَ هَذَا الصَّبَاح ؟

هو : أَجِبْ

Instructor : No I'll eat later with my daughter

هو : لَا سَآكُل فيما بعد مَعَ ابْنَتِي

Instructor : She wants to know if you've seen anything
, tell her that yes you saw many things today

هو : نَعَم رَأيتُ أشيَاءً عَدِيدَةً اليَومَ

Instructor : Tell her that you bought an American newspaper

هو : اشتَريتُ جَرِيدةً أمرِيكِيَّةً

Instructor : And something for my daughter

هو : وشيئاً لَا بْنَتِي

Instructor : She's going to the Omayyad mosque tomorrow

هو :  سَوفَ تَذهبُ إِلَى الجَامِع الأُمَويّ  غَدَاً

هو : قُلْ

Instructor : I will have dinner with the children tonight

هو : سَوفَ آكل ُ العَشَاءَ مَعَ الأولاد اللَّيلة

هو : الآن قُلْ :

Instructor : I bought some thing for my daughter this morning

هو : اشْتَرَيتُ شَيئاً لابْنَتِي هَذَا الصَّبَاح

Instructor : I spoke Arabic in a store

هو : تكلَمْتُ العَرَبيَّة في المتجر

Instructor : I saw many things today

هو : أنَا رَأَيتُ أشْياءً عديدَةً اليَومَ

Instructor : But I didn't eat anything

هو : لَكِنْ لَمْ آكُلْ شَيئاً

Instructor : We will have dinner later

هو : نَحْنُ سوفَ نَأكُل ُ العَشَاءَ فيما بعد .

Instructor : Really I saw many things this morning

هو : حقاً رَأَيتُ أشياء ً عديدة ً هَذَا الصَّبَاح

Instructor : Maybe I'll drink a little tea now

هو : رُبَّمَا سَأشْرَبُ قليلاً مِنَ الشَّاي الآن

Instructor : Now your wife is with you,  
how does she say : my son

هو : اِبْنِي

Instructor : My young son

هو : اِبْنِي الصَّغِير

Instructor : How does she tell Rana that he
rented a car today

هو : اسْتَأجَرَ سَيَّارَة اليَوم

هو : كَيفَ تَقُول :

Instructor : How do you say : the young one ,
literally the son the young

هو : الابْن الصَّغِير

Instructor : Now try to tell her : our young son
rented a car this morning

هو : ابْنَنَا الصَّغِير اسْتَأجَرَ سَيَّارَةَ هَذَا الصَّبَاح

Instructor : He's going to Homs tomorrow

هو : هُوَ ذاهبٌ إِلَى حِمْص غَدَاً

Instructor : He wants to see his friends there

هو : هُوَ يُرِيد ُ أن يَرَى أصدقاءَه هُنَاك

Instructor : Say that he's going to Homs

هو : هُوَ ذاهبٌ إِلَى حِمْص

Instructor : But our young daughter

هو : لَكِنْ ابنتنَا الصَّغِيرة

Instructor : wants to see the Omayyad mosque

هو : تريدُ أنْ تَرَى الجَامِعَ الأُمَويّ

Instructor : She doesn't need a car in Damascus

هو : هي لَا تحتاج إِلَى سَيَّارَة في دِمَشْقَ

Instructor : Here the man would say I'm going to
Beirut tomorrow

هو : أنا ذاهبٌ إِلَى بَيرُوت غَدَاً

هو : الآن قُلْ :

Instructor : My older daughter isn't going

هو : ابْنَتِي الكَبِيرَة ليسَت ذاهبة

هو : كيف تقول بالعَرَبيَّة :

Instructor : She lives

هو : هِيَ سَاكِنَةٌ

Instructor: OR

هو : هي تسكُن  

Instructor: both forms are correct

هو : هي ساكنة   ....هي تسكن

هي ساكنة .....هي تسكن

Instructor : She lives in Damascus

هو : هي سَاكِنَةٌ  في دِمَشْقَ

Instructor : She wants to see her friends tomorrow

هو : هي تُريدُ أنْ تَرَى أصْدِقَاءَها غَدَاً

Instructor : She doesn't need a car

هو : هي لَا تَحتَاجُ إِلَى سَيَّارَة

Instructor : I'm going to Beirut tomorrow

هو : أنَا ذاهبٌ إِلَى بَيرُوت غَدَاً

Instructor : But she isn't going to Beirut with me

هو : لَكِنَّها ليسَت ذاهبةٌ إِلَى بيروت مَعي

Instructor : My older daughter lives in Damascus

هو : ابْنَتِي الكبرى سَاكِنَةٌ في دِمَشْقَ

Instructor : Now your wife has to go shopping ,
how does she say to Rana and you , excuse me

هي : عفواً

Instructor : Tell Rana she needs an American newspaper

هو : هيَ تحتَاج ُ إِلَى جَرِيدةً أمرِيكِيَّةً

Instructor : And our young  son is going to Homs tomorrow

هو : وابْنُنَا الصَّغِير ذاهبٌ إِلَى حُمْص غَدَاً

Instructor : He wants to see his friends there

هو : هُوَ يريد ُ أن يَرَى أصدقاءَه هناك

Instructor : Your wife is leaving , how would
you say good bye to her?

هو : مَعَ السَّلَامة

Instructor : Hear how she says good bye in response

هي : حفظك الله

Instructor : Literally she responded  by saying God bless you

Instructor : Say good bye to your wife

هو : مَعَ السَّلَامة

Instructor : How does she respond?

هي : حفظك الله

Instructor : Now Rana asks you , what did you do yesterday ?

هي : مَاذا فعلتَ الَبارِحَة ؟

هو : أجبْ

Instructor : My wife rented a car

هو : زَوجي اسْتَأجَرَت سَيَّارَة

Instructor : We need a car

هو : نَحْنُ نحتاجُ إِلَى سَيَّارَة

هو : الآن قُلْ :

Instructor : Last night we went to a good restaurant

هو : اللَّيلة المَاضِيَة نَحْنُ ذَهبنا إِلَى مَطْعَم جَيِّد

Instructor : Hear and then say :
we spoke Arabic with the waiter

هو : استمَعَ وكرِّر :

هو :تحدثنا العَرَبيَّةَ مَعَ النَّادِل

هو : كَيفَ تقولُ:

Instructor : The waiter

هو : النَّادِل

هو : الآن قُلْ :

Instructor : We spoke Arabic with the children

هو : تحدثنا العَرَبيَّة مَعَ الأولَاد

Instructor : And with the waiter

هو : ومَعَ النَّادِل

Instructor : My younger son speaks Arabic very well

هو : اِبْنِي الصَّغِير يتحدث العَرَبيَّة جَيِّد جِدَّاً

Instructor : You have to leave so you say good bye ,
how does Rana say good bye in response to you

هي : حفظكَ الله

Instructor : Now it's another day and you're
speaking to Coly , say to her : yesterday we went to
Aleppo

هو : البَارِحَة ذَهبنَا إِلَى حَلَبَ

Instructor : My wife rented a car

هو : زَوجي اسْتَأجَرَت سَيَّارَة

Instructor : Say that you went to a good restaurant

هو : ذَهَبنَا إِلَى مَطْعَمٍ جيِّد

Instructor : We spoke Arabic with the waiter

هو : تحدثنا العَرَبيَّة مَعَ النَّادِل

Instructor : And we bought some sweets

هو : واِشْتَرَينَا بَعْضَ الحَلَويَّات

Instructor : Now say and we bought some sweets

هو : واِشْتَرَينَا بَعْضَ الحَلَويَّات

Instructor : Tell her that your wife rented a car

هو : زَوجي اسْتَأجَرَت سَيَّارَة

Instructor : She needs a car in Aleppo

هو : هِيَ تَحتاجُ إِلَى سَيَّارَة في حَلَبَ

Instructor : Now say : we need a car in Aleppo

هو : نَحْنُ نَحتَاجُ إِلَى سَيَّارَة في حَلَبَ

Instructor : It's a big city

هو : إنها مَدِينَة كَبِيرَة

Instructor : What's the Arabic word for a city or a town

هو : مَدِينَة

Instructor : She says : Aleppo is a big city

هي : حَلَبَ مَدِينَة كَبِيرَة

Instructor : A colleague asks you what did you see
in Aleppo?

هي : مَاذَا رَأَيتَ في حَلَبَ؟

Instructor : In Aleppo , here’s how she asks did
you see the old town ?

هي : هَلْ رَأَيتَ المدينة القَدِيمَة ؟

Instructor : How does she ask you : did you see
the old town ?

هي : هَلْ رَأَيتَ المدينة القَدِيمَة ؟

Instructor : Yes , my wife wants to see many things

هو : نَعَم زوجي تُريد أَنْ تَرَى أشياءً عديدةً

Instructor : We bought some sweets

هو : اِشْتَرَينَا بَعْضَ الحَلَويَّات

Instructor : We ate in the old town

هو : أكَلنَا في المدينة القَدِيمَة

Instructor : Referring to both of you , she asks :
did you speak Arabic ?

هي : هَلْ تحدثتم العَرَبيَّة ؟

Instructor : Yes , at a restaurant

هو : نَعَم في مَطْعَم

Instructor : In the old town

هو : فِي المدينة القَدِيمَة

Instructor : We spoke Arabic with the waiter

هو : تحدثنا العَرَبيَّة مَعَ النَّادِل

Instructor : We ate in the old town

هو : أكَلنَا فِي المدينة القَدِيمَة

Instructor : Do you remember how to say :
I don't have much time

هي: لَيسَ عندي الكَثِيرُ مِنَ الوَقْت

Instructor : She says : we don't have much time now

هي : ليسَ عندَنا كَثير مِنَ الوَقْت الآن

Instructor : We will have dinner with the two girls

هي :  نَحْنُ سَوفَ نَأكل العَشَاءَ مَعَ البنتَين

هو : قُلْ :

Instructor : Yes , we have a lot of time

هي : نَعَم ، نَحْنُ عندنا الكَثِير مِنَ الوَقْت

Instructor : Now hear and then say :
we didn't have much time

هي : لَمْ  يَكُنْ عندنَا الكَثِيرُ مِنَ الوَقْت

Instructor : Say together : we don't have , we didn't have

هي : لَيسَ عندنا ،  لَمْ  يَكُنْ عندنَا

هو : الآن قُلْ :

Instructor : We didn't have much time

هو : لَمْ  يَكُنْ عندنَا الكَثِير مِنَ الوَقْت

Instructor : You want to tell her : I had a lot of work too
 , first the word for work :

هو : عَمَل

هو : قُلْ :

Instructor : A lot of work

هو : عَمَل كثِير

Instructor : Hear and then say : I had

هو : كَانَ عندي

هو : الآن قُلْ :

Instructor : I had a lot of work too

هو : كَانَ عندي الكَثِير مِنَ العَمَل أَيضَاً

Instructor : Say that you had a lot of work in Aleppo

هو : كَانَ عندي الكَثِير مِنَ العَمَل في حَلَبَ

Instructor : How does she say :
today we don't have much time

هي : اليَوم لَيسَ عندنَا الكَثِير مِنَ الوَقْت

Instructor : Talking about your trip :
say we didn't have much time

هو :  لَمْ  يَكُنْ عندنَا الكَثِيرَ مِنَ الوَقْت

Instructor : We had a lot of work in Aleppo

هو : كَانَ عندنَا الكَثِير مِنَ العَمَل في حَلَبَ

هو : قُلْ :

Instructor : I saw the old town

هو : رَأَيتُ المدينة القَدِيمَة

Instructor : And we bought some sweets

هو : واِشْتَرَينَا بَعْضَ الحَلَويَّات

Instructor : Here's another word for " but "

هو : لَكِنْ

Instructor : Say but we didn't go to a restaurant

هو : لَكِنْ  لَمْ  نَذْهَب إِلَى مَطْعَم

Instructor : We didn't have much time

هو :  لَمْ  يَكُنْ عنديَا الكَثِير مِنَ الوَقْت

Instructor : You also went to Aleppo ,
how does she say : it's a big city ?

هي : إنَّها مَدِينَة كَبِيرَة

Instructor : She says Aleppo is a big city

هي : حَلَبَ مَدِينَة كبيرة

Instructor : Aleppo is very big

هي : حَلَبَ كَبِيرَة جِدَّاً

Instructor : Now an Arab friend is telling you
about an Arab restaurant , she went to a new
restaurant ask her if she spoke English to the waiter

هو : هَلْ تَحدثتِ الانجْلِيزِيَّة مَعَ النَّادِل ؟

Instructor : She says : yes, I spoke English at the restaurant

هي : نَعَم تحدثتُ الَانجْلِيزِيَّة في الَمْطْعَم

Instructor : And with my daughter too

هي : ومَعَ ابْنَتِي أيضَاً

Instructor : She lives in Homs

هي : هي سَاكِنَة في حمْص

Instructor : But she speaks English very well

هي : ولَكِنَّها تتحدثُ الِانجْلِيزِيَّة جَيِّد جِدَّاً

Instructor : Now your friend wants to know if you've
been to Homs , she asks : did you go to Homs ?

هي : هَلْ ذَهَبْتَ إِلَى حُمْص ؟

Instructor : Can you guess how you would ask
a woman the same question ?

هو : هَلْ ذَهَبْتِ إِلَى حمْص ؟

Instructor : You answer : no , I didn't go

هو : لَا  ،  لَمْ  أذهبْ

Instructor : Now try to say : I didn't have the time

هو :  لَمْ  يَكُنْ عندي الوَقْت

Instructor : Ask : is Homs a big city ?

هو : هَلْ حمْص مَدِينَة كَبِيرَة ؟

Instructor : She says : Damascus is bigger

هي : دِمَشْقَ أَكْبَر

Instructor : What's the word for " bigger " ?

أَكْبَر

Instructor : She says Damascus is bigger

هي : دِمَشْقَ أَكْبَر

هو : قُلْ :

Instructor : I didn't go to Homs

هو : أنا  لَمْ أذهب إِلَى حُمْص

Instructor : I had a lot of work in Aleppo

هو : كَانَ عندي الكَثِير مِنَ العَمَل في حَلَبَ

Instructor : We didn't have the time

هو : لَمْ  يَكُنْ عندنَا الوَقْت

Instructor : But our young  son

هو : لَكِنْ ابْنَنَا الصَّغِير

Instructor : Is going to Homs

هو : ذَاهِبٌ إِلَى حُمْص

Instructor : He wants to see the city

هو : هُوَ يريدُ أَن يَرَى المَدِينَة

Instructor : But I don't have much time today

هو : ولَكِنْ لَيْسَ عندي الوَقْت الكثير اليَومَ

Instructor : We will have dinner with the children

هو : سَوفَ نَأكل العَشَاء مَعَ الأَولَاد

Instructor : Say that you have a lot of work tomorrow

هو : عندي الكَثِير مِنَ العَمَل غَدَاً

Instructor : I had a lot of work yesterday , too

هو : كَانَ عندي الكَثِير مِنَ العَمَل البَارِحَة أيضَاً

Instructor : Now she has to leave , how does she say good bye

هي : مَعَ السَّلَامَة

Instructor : How would you say good bye in response to her

هو : حفظكِ الله

Instructor : Now you're telling a friend about your
trip to Aleppo , she asks : did you see the old town

هي : هَلْ رَأَيتَ المدينة القَدِيمَة ؟

Instructor : Tell her : yes , I saw the old town

هو : نَعَم ، رَأَيتُ المدينة القَدِيمَة

Instructor : And we bought some sweets

هو : واِشْتَرَينَا بَعْضَ الحَلَويَّات

Instructor : Ask her : is Homs a big city?

هو : هَلْ حمْص مَدِينَة كَبِيرَة ؟

Instructor : She says : Damascus is bigger

هي : دِمَشْقَ أَكْبَر

Instructor : Ask if she went to Homs

هو : هَلْ ذهبتِ إِلَى حمْص ؟

Instructor : She tells you that she did tell her :
I didn't go to Homs

هو : أنا  لَمْ  أذهب إِلَى حمْص

Instructor :  I had a lot of work in Aleppo

هو : كَانَ عندي الكَثِير مِنَ العَمَل في حَلَبَ

Instructor : We didn't have the time

هو : لَمْ  يَكُنْ عندنَا الوَقْت

Instructor: Homs, Aleppo, and Damascus are cities
in one Arab country, Syria….now say Homs is an Arab city

هو : حمص مدينة عربية

Instructor: now it is your turn to say Aleppo is an Arab city

هي: حلب مدينة عربية

Instructor: and …..?   Damascus is a big Arab city

هو : دمشق مدينة عربية كبيرة

Instructor : Now ask if she went to Aleppo

هو : هَلْ ذهبتِ إِلَى حَلَبَ؟

Instructor : She says : yes , I like Aleppo a lot

هي : نَعَم ، أنا أحبُّ حَلَبَ كثيراً

Instructor : Your friend says : it's a big city

هي : إنها مَدِينَة كَبِيرَة

Instructor : But Damascus is bigger

هي : لَكِنْ دِمَشْقَ أَكْبَر

Instructor : Today I have a lot of work

هو : اليَوم عِندِي الكَثِير مِنَ العَمَل

Instructor : Now she has to leave , she says good bye

هي : مَعَ السَّلَامة

Instructor : How do you say good bye in response to her

هو : حفظَك ِ الله
