هُوَ : هل أعرف صديقتك ؟

Instructor : do I know your friend ?

هُوَ : استمع إلى هذه المحادثة :

هُوَ : هل عندكِ وقتاُ لتشربي قهُوَة ؟

هِيَ : لا ، ليس الآن .. صديقتي آتية لتزورني وليس عندي وقت كثير

هُوَ : هل أعرف صديقتكِ ؟

هِيَ : لا أعتقد ، اسمها هبة قائد وهِيَ من بيروت ولم أرَها منذ سَنَة
... لكن نستطيعُ أن نشرب كوباً من الشَّاي معاً فيما بعد

هُوَ : جَيِّد جِدَّاً ،  بإذنك

Instructor :in reference to the name…she is

هُوَ : هبة قائد

Instructor : they all have been together

هُوَ : معاً

Instructor : together

هُوَ : استمع إلى هذه المحادثة مرة أخرى :

هُوَ : هل عندكِ وقتاُ لتشربي قهُوَة ؟

Instructor : now imagine you're MRS Johnson ,
when you're attending to Damascus you meet
MR Ramzi , He might say : Hi , MRS Johnson

هُوَ : استمع وكرر

هُوَ : مَرْحَبَاً ، يَا سيِّدَة جونسون

Instructor : How do you say : Hi MR Ramzi ,
How are you ?

هِيَ : مرحبا يا سيِّد رمزي ، كيف حالُك َ ؟

Instructor : he says : very well , thank you

هُوَ :  جَيِّدة جِدَّاً ، شُكْرَاً

Instructor : now a colleague , how do you say : Hi

هِيَ : مَرْحَبَاً

Instructor : this is a very common Arabic greeting
…. MR Ramzi Asks you : do you have time to drink
coffee ?

هُوَ : هل عندكِ وقتاً  لتشربي قهُوَة ؟

Instructor : answer him : not now but maybe later

هِيَ : ليسَ الآنَ ولكن رُبَّمَا فيما بعد  

Instructor : How would he ask : you like to go to the Arab café
, right ?

هُوَ : أنتِ تُحِبِّينَ أن تَذْهَبي إلَى مقهي العرب، أَلَيسَ كَذلكَ ؟

Instructor : he says : right ? " or " isn't that so ?

هُوَ : أَلَيسَ كَذلكَ ؟

Instructor : tell him : yes , I like the Arab café

هِيَ : نَعَم أنَا أحب ُ مقهي العرب

Instructor : how would MR Ramzi say : we can drink

هُوَ : نستطيعُ أن نَشربَ

Instructor : He says : we can drink a glass of green tea

هُوَ : نستطيعُ أن نشرب كوباً  من الشَّاي الأخضر

Instructor : How would he say : right ? "or" isn't that so ?

هُوَ : أليسَ كذلكَ ؟

Instructor : Tell him that you like red tea

هِيَ : أنَا أحبُ الشَّاي الأحمرَ

Instructor : I never drink green tea

هِيَ : أنا لا أشرَب ُ الشَّاي الأخضرَ أبداً

Instructor : Tell him that you sometimes drink red tea
, say : sometimes

هِيَ :أحيانَاً

Instructor : try to say : sometimes I drink red tea

هي: أحياناً أشربُ الشَّاي الأحمر

Instructor : Say that you never drink beer

هِيَ : أنا لا أشرب البيرة أبداً

Instructor : But you like the Arab café , right ?

هُوَ : لكنَّكِ تُحِبِّينَ مقهي العرب ، أليس كذلك ؟

Instructor : You agree and he adjusts the time to meet and says
: at five o'clock

هُوَ : السَّاعَة الخامسة ؟

Instructor : You say : alright , bye

هِيَ : حسناً ،  بإِذنِكَ

Instructor : Now you are an American man in Damascus ,
a friend says : hi

هِيَ : مَرْحَبَاً

Instructor : Referring to a woman , say : a colleague
of mine

هُوَ : زَمِيلَتِي

Instructor : A colleague of mine is coming to
visit me

هُوَ : زَمِيلَتِي آتية لتزورني

Instructor : Her name is Electra

هُوَ : اسمها اليكترا

Instructor : She's coming to visit me with her husband

هُوَ : هِيَ آتية لتزورني مع زوجها

Instructor : How does your friend ask if you know him

هِيَ : هل تعرفه ؟

Instructor : Yes I know him well

هُوَ : نعم أنا أَعرِفُهُ جَيِّداً

Instructor : His daughter is a friend of mine

هِيَ : ابنته صَدِيقَتِي

Instructor : This time your friend asks :
do you know her husband ?

هِيَ : هل تعرف زوجها ؟

Instructor : Yes I know him , he likes Arab countries a lot

هُوَ : نعم أعرفه ، هُوَ يحبُ البلاد العربية كَثِيراً

Instructor : Another colleague joins you , how does she say : hi

هِيَ : مَرْحَبَاً

Instructor : Your friend wants to ask when your colleague
is coming , she says : your female colleague

هِيَ : زَميلتُكَ

Instructor : Now your friend asks : when is your
colleague coming ?

هِيَ : متَى زَميلتكَ آَتِيَة ؟

Instructor : She's coming to visit me at one o'clock

هُوَ : هِيَ آتية لتزُورَني السَّاعَة الوَاحِدة

Instructor : My colleague is Canadian

هُوَ : زَمِيلَتِي كنديَّة

Instructor : Unfortunately , I haven't seen her for a year

هُوَ : للأسف ، لم أرها منذ سَنَة

Instructor : Or her husband for two years

هُوَ : أو زَوجها من سَنَتَيْن

Instructor : Her son and his daughter are coming too

هُوَ : ابنُها وابنتُه آتيانِ أيضاً

Instructor : Your friend asks : you haven't seen
your colleague for a year ?

هِيَ : لَم ترَ زميلتك منذ سَنَة ؟

Instructor : You want to say :  both are from
Canada , here's the word for " both "

هُوَ : كِلَاهُمَا

هُوَ : قل بالعَرَبِيَّة :

Instructor : Both or both of them

هُوَ : كِلَاهُمَا

Instructor : Say : both of them are from
Canada

هُوَ : كِلَاهُمَا من كندا

Instructor : They both speak Arabic

هُوَ : كِلَاهُمَا يتحدثُ العَرَبِيَّة

Instructor : Do you remember the word for " always "

هُوَ : دائماً

Instructor : They always speak Arabic with me

هُوَ : هُمَا دائماً يتحدثان العَرَبِيَّة مَعِي

Instructor : You want to say : now they live in Homs

هُوَ : الآن هما يسكنان في حمص

Instructor : Here's the word for " they live "

هُوَ : يسَكنَان

هُوَ : قُلْ :

Instructor : Now they live in Homs

هُوَ : الآن هما يسَكنان في حمص

Instructor : They both speak Arabic very well

هُوَ : كِلَاهُمَا يتحدثُ العَرَبِيَّة جَيِّد جِدَّاً

Instructor : my colleague and her son with
her husband and his daughter

هُوَ : زَمِيلَتِي وابنُها مَعَ زوجِها وابنتِه

Instructor : Your friend asks you again :
when is your colleague coming ?

هِيَ : متَى زميلتكَ آتيةٌ ؟

Instructor : She wants to invite you to have
a glass of tea , what's the word for " you have
" meaning " you drink " speaking to a woman ?

هُوَ : تَشربين

Instructor : Can you guess how to say that when
you are speaking to a man ?

هِيَ : تَشرب

Instructor : now she asks you : do you have
time to drink a glass of tea with me?

هِيَ : هل عندكَ وقتاَ لتشربي كوباً منَ الشَّاي مَعِي ؟

Instructor : Tell her : yes , why not ! ?

نعم ، لِمَ لا !؟

Instructor : Ask her : would you like to go to
the Arab café ?

هُوَ : هل تُحِبِّينَ أنْ تَذْهَبي إلى مقهي العرب ؟

Instructor : She says : you don't always have
time , right ?

هِيَ : ليس دائماً عندكَ وقت ... أليسَ كذلكَ ؟

Instructor : No , but today I have enough time

هُوَ : لا ، لكن اليَوم عند ي وقتٌ كافي

هُوَ : اسألْ :

Instructor : Would you like to go to the Arab café ?

هُوَ : هل تُحِبِّينَ أن تَذْهَبي إلى مقهي العرب ؟

Instructor : Tell her : they are coming from Homs
at one o'clock…the pronunciation "they" here in this
situation refers to two people.

هُوَ : هما آتيان من حمص السَّاعَة الواحدة

Instructor : What's the word for both ?

هُوَ : كِلَاهُمَا

هُوَ : قل :

Instructor : They both speak Arabic very well

هُوَ : كِلَاهُمَا يتحدثُ العَرَبِيَّة جَيِّد جِدَّاً

Instructor : Unfortunately , I haven't seen my
colleague for a year

هُوَ : للأسف ، لم أرَ زَمِيلَتِي منذ سَنَة

Instructor : Or her husband for two years

هُوَ : أو زوجُها منذ سَنَتَيْن

Instructor : I saw him in Canada

هُوَ : رأيتُهُ في كندا

Instructor : They're coming to visit me today
…note that "they" here refers to two people in Arabic

هُوَ : هما آتيانِ ليزوراني اليوم

Instructor : Say again : they both are from Canada

هُوَ : كِلَاهُمَا من كندا

هُوَ : قل :

Instructor : They always speak Arabic with me

هُوَ : هُمَا دائماً يتحدثان مَعِي بالعَرَبِيَّة

Instructor : How would your friend ask where
they live now ?

هِيَ : أين هُمَا ساكنان الآن ؟

Instructor : Hear and then say : three years

هُوَ : ثَلَاث سَنَوَات

Instructor : They've lived in Homs for three years

هُوَ : هُمَا ساكنان في حمص منذ ثَلَاث سَنَوَات

Instructor : For two or three years now

هُوَ : منذ سَنَتَيْن أو ثَلَاث سَنَوَات الآن

Instructor : Unfortunately , I haven't seen
her for three years

هُوَ : لِلأسَف ، لم أرَها منذ ثَلَاث سَنَوَات

Instructor : You correct yourself and say :
no for one year

هُوَ : لا ، منذ سَنَة

Instructor : My colleague and her husband

هُوَ : زَمِيلَتِي وزوجها

Instructor : They've lived in Homs

هُوَ : ساكنان في حمص

قل :

Instructor : For two or three years now

هُوَ : منذ سَنَتَيْن أو ثَلَاث سَنَوَات الآن

قل :

Instructor : Both

هِيَ : كِلَاهُمَا

Instructor : She asks : they both are from
Canada , right ?

هِيَ : كِلَاهُمَا من كندا ، أليسَ كَذلكَ ؟

أجب :

Instructor : My colleague and her
husband live in Homs now

هُوَ : زَمِيلَتِي وزوجها ساكنان في حمص الآن

Instructor : They've lived in Homs for three years

هُوَ : ساكنان في حمص  مِنذ ثَلَاث سَنَوَات

Instructor : Tell her : but they both are
from Canada

هُوَ : لَكِن كِلَاهُمَا من كندا

Instructor : Say that they're coming to
visit you today

هُوَ : هُما آتيان ليزوراني اليَوم

Instructor : She asks you : they both speak
Arabic , right ?

هُوَ : كِلَاهُمَا يتحدثُ العَرَبِيَّة ، أليس كذلك ؟

Instructor : Yes but sometimes they speak
English with my wife

هُوَ : نعم ولكن أحياناً  يتحدثان الانجليزية مع زوجتي

Instructor : But now would you like to go
to the Arab café ?

هُوَ : لكن الآن ، هل تُحِبِّينَ أن تَذْهَبي إلى مقهي العرب ؟

Instructor : Later , you are in your office in
Damascus , and you see a colleague , how
does she say : Hi , Charles

هِيَ : مَرْحَبَاً يا تشارلز

Instructor : Now she asks : do you always
have a lot of work ?

هِيَ : هل دائماً عندكَ الكثير منَ العَمَل ؟

هُوَ : أجب :

Instructor : Not today

هُوَ : ليس اليوم

Instructor : In any case , do you have
time to have a glass of tea with me ?

هِيَ : إذاً ، هل عندكَ وقتاَ لتشربَ كوباً منَ الشَّاي مَعِي ؟

Instructor : At the Arab café ?

هِيَ : في مقهي العرب

قل :

Instructor : Yes they always speak English
with me there

هُوَ : هما دائماً يتحدثان الانجليزية مَعِي هُنَاكَ

Instructor : You want to tell her that you go there
, with " go " or " going " you say literally "
to there " try :

هُوَ : إلى هُنَاكَ

Instructor : How does she say : I want
to go there with you

هِيَ : أريد أن أذهب إلى هُنَاكَ معك

هُوَ : استمع وكرر

Instructor : I go there

هُوَ : أَذهبُ إلى هُنَاكَ

هُوَ : قل :

Instructor : I go

هُوَ : أذهبُ

Instructor : Now say for a man " I go " " I'm going "

هُوَ : أذهبُ ، ذاهبٌ

Instructor : What's the word for " sometimes "

هُوَ : أحياناً

الآن قل :

Instructor : Sometimes I go there

هُوَ : أحياناً أنا أذهب إلى هُنَاكَ

Instructor : " there " literally " to there "

هُوَ : إلى هُنَاكَ

هُوَ : قل :

Instructor : Sometimes I go there

هُوَ : أحياناً أذهبُ إلى هُنَاكَ

Instructor : Referring to a man say :with a friend of mine

هُوَ : مع صديقي

Instructor  : How would you say : he's going there today

هُوَ : هُوَ ذاهبٌ إلى هُنَاكَ اليوم

Instructor  : She says : we're going there now

هِيَ : نحن ذاهبُون إلى هُنَاكَ الآن

كيف تقول :

Instructor  : I go there.

هُوَ : أذهبُ إلى هُنَاكَ

Instructor : She says we are going there now

هي : نحن ذاهبُون إلى هُنَاكَ الآن

Instructor : Sometimes I go there with my husband

هِيَ : أحياناً أذهبُ إلى هُنَاكَ مع زَوجي

Instructor : Now she asks : are we going there now ?

هِيَ : هل نحنُ ذاهبُون الآن ؟

Instructor : Later you and your friend want to
return to a hotel , but you don't know the way of the bus
, your friend suggests : we can go back on foot …
here's the word for " on foot "

هِيَ : سيراً على الأقدام   

Instructor : and here's " to return " or " to go back "

هِيَ : يَرْجِعُ

Instructor : now try to say : to go back on foot

هِيَ : يَرْجِعُ سيراً عَلَى الأقدام

Instructor : to say we go back , you add an " N "
sound to the beginning … how would you say
: we go back " or " we return

هِيَ : نَرْجِع

الآن قل :

Instructor : we go back by walking

هِيَ : نَرْجِعُ سيراً على الأقدام

Instructor : say together " we go back " , " we're going "

هِيَ : نَرْجِع ، ذاهبون

Instructor  : She is speaking too fast , say
: excuse me , I don't understand

هُوَ : عفواً ، لم أفهَمْ

اسأل :

Instructor : Are we going there on foot ?

هُوَ : هل نحن ذاهبون إلى هُنَاكَ سيراً على الأقدام ؟

هُوَ : كيف تقول

Instructor : We go back " or " we return

هُوَ : نَرْجِع

Instructor : Hear and then say : I return " or " I go back

هِيَ : أَرْجِع

Instructor : Now how does she say :
sometimes I return on foot

هِيَ : أحياناً  أَرْجِعُ سيراً على الأقدام

Instructor : Or I take a taxi

هُوَ : استمع وكرر

هِيَ : أو آخذ سَيَّارَة أُجْرَة

Instructor  : Now she says : sometimes , I take a taxi

هِيَ : أحياناً آخذ سَيَّارَة أُجْرَة

Instructor : Can you guess how to say : we take a taxi

هُوَ : نأخذ سَيَّارَة أُجْرَة

Instructor : we can take a taxi

هُوَ : يمكن أن نأخُذ سَيَّارَة أُجْرَة

Instructor  :  how would she say : I can return on foot

هِيَ : أستطيع أن أَرْجِع سيراً على الأقدام

Instructor : but sometimes I take a taxi

هِيَ : لكن أحياناً آخُذ سَيَّارَة أُجْرَة

Instructor  : How do you say : we can return on foot

هُوَ : نستطيعُ أن نَرْجِع سيراً على الأقدام

Instructor: … say : or we can take a taxi

هُوَ : أو نستطيع أن نأخُذ سَيَّارَة أُجْرَة

Instructor : your friend says : I don't have much time

هِيَ : ليس عندي وقتٌ كثير

Instructor : I'm going to have dinner

هِيَ : سأكلُ العشَاء

Instructor  : Referring to a man : with a colleague of mine

هِيَ : مَعَ زميلي

Instructor : how does she say my
colleague when referring to a man

هِيَ : زميلي

هُوَ : قل : اسمه مازن

هِيَ : اسمه مازن

هُوَ : هِيَ تسأل :

Instructor : do you know him ?

هِيَ : هل تعرفُه ؟

Instructor : referring to a man ,
she says : my colleague is coming to visit me today

هِيَ : زميلي آتي ليزورَني اليوم

هُوَ : قل :

Instructor : yes , I know him

هُوَ : نَعَم أعرفُهُ

Instructor : I think his wife is Canadian

هُوَ : أعتقد أن زوجته كندية

Instructor : she says : yes, they've lived
in Aleppo for three years

هِيَ : نعم ، هُمَا ساكنان في حلب منذ ثَلَاث سَنَوَات

Instructor  : She tells you : his wife
is a friend of mine too

هِيَ : زوجتُه صديقتي أيضَاً

هُوَ : قُلْ :

Instructor : alright , we can take a taxi today

هُوَ : حَسَنَاً ، نستطيعُ أن نأخذ سَيَّارَة أُجْرَة الآن
