Instructor : You hear

هو :هَلْ تَعْرِفه ؟

Instructor : You don't know him ……and

هو : رَأَيتُه

Instructor : I saw him

هي :عَفْوَاً تشارلز ، لَكِن يَجِبُ أن أرحل الآن

هو : حَقَّاً ؟.... لِمَاذَا ؟

هي :يَجِبُ أن أَذَهّب إلى المدينة ، غدا ً سَأَرَى زميلي

هو :أَيُّ زميل ؟

هي :لَا تَعْرِفه ، اِسْمُه جاك راندال

هو :أَعْرِفُ جاك ، رَأَيتُه البَارِحَة

هو : اِسْتمِع إلى هَذهِ المُحادثةِ مرَّةً أُخرَى :

هي :عَفْوَاً تشارلز ، لَكِن يَجِبُ أن أرحل الآن

هو : حَقَّاً ؟ لِمَاذَا ؟

هي :يَجِبُ أن أَذَهّب إلى المدينة ، غداً  سَأَرَى زميلي

هو :أَيُّ زميل ؟

هي :لَا تَعْرِفه ، اِسْمُه جاك راندال

هو :أَعْرِفُ جاك ، رَأَيتُه البَارِحَة

Instructor : Now you and your colleague
are in a restaurant in Damascus when she
sees the man she knows , how does she say : ah
, there's a colleague of mine

هي :آه ،  زميلي هناك َ

Instructor : Can you guess which part of that means
 " colleague " ?

هي : زميل

Instructor : She says : he's going to Aleppo with me ,tomorrow

هي :هُوَ ذاهب ُ مَعِي إلى حَلَب غداً

هو :اِسْأَلْ :

Instructor : What's his name ?

هو :ما اسْمُه ؟

Instructor : Try to ask : which colleague ?

هو :أَيُّ زميل ؟

Instructor : She tells you : his name is Jack Randall , he is an American

هي :اسْمُه جاك راندال ، هُوَ أمريكيّ

Instructor : How does she say : a colleague

هي :زميل

Instructor : "He likes" is the same as "he would like"
how would you ask if he likes Syria ?

هو : هَلْ يُحِبُّ سُوريَا ؟

Instructor : She answers : yes he likes Syria a lot

هي : نَعَمْ ، هُوَ يُحِبُّ سُوريَا كَثِيْراً

Instructor : When it's time to leave ,
how do you say bye…the new form ?

هو : بإِذْنِكِ

Instructor : Now it's end of another day ,
a friend asks : what did you do today ?

هي :مَاذَا فَعلْتَ اليَوْم ؟

Instructor : Today I saw the city with my son

هو :اليَوْم رَأَيتُ المَدينَة مَعَ ابنِي

Instructor : Which son ?

هي :أَيُّ ابْن ؟

Instructor : the young one

هو : الصغير

Instructor : Which son ? the youngest one ?

هي :أَيُّ ابْن ؟ الأصغر ؟

Instructor : Is he here with you ?

هي : هَلْ هُوَ مَعَك َ هنا ؟

Instructor : Yes , my youngest son lives here

هو : نَعَمْ ابنِي الأصغر يسكن هُنَا

Instructor : But today we didn't have much time

هو :لَكِن اليَوْم لَم يَكُن عندنَا وَقْت كَثِيْر

Instructor : How does she ask you : have you been to lattakia ?

هي : هَلْ ذَهّبتَ إلى اللَّاذِقِيَّة ؟

هو : أَجِبْ :

Instructor : No , I haven't been to lattakia yet

هو : لَا لَم أَذَهّب إلَى اللَّاذِقِيَّة بَعْدُ

Instructor : The word for " still " is the same for " yet "

Instructor : Say : I still haven't been to Lattakia

هو : لم أَذَهّب بَعْدُ إِلَى اللَّاذِقِيَّة

Instructor : She says : Lattakia isn't a big city

هي : اللَّاذِقِيَّة لَيْسَت مَدينَة ً كَبيرَة

Instructor : Agree with her , say : no , Damascus is bigger

هو : لا ، دِمَشْقُ أَكبَرُ

Instructor : She tells you that she's been to
Lattakia many times , tell her : I haven't had
the time yet

هو :لَيْسَ عندي الوَقْت بَعْدُ

Instructor : She asks : did you see the old town ?

هي : هَلْ رَأَيتَ المدينة القَديمَةَ ؟

Instructor : She says : Lattakia isn't big , Damascus
is bigger

هي : اللَّاذِقِيَّة لَيْسَت كَبيرَة ، دِمَشْقُ أَكبَر

Instructor : Say : I have to leave now

هو : يَجِبُ أن أرحل الآَن

Instructor : You say good bye to her

هو :مَعَ السَّلامَة

Instructor : How does she say good bye in response

هي :حفظكّ الله

Instructor : How do you say : I have to leave , bye

هو :يَجِبُ أَن أرحل ، بإِذْنِك

Instructor : Now it's another day , you're speaking
with your colleague , she says : did you have a lot
of work yesterday ?

هي : هَلْ كان عندكَ الكَثِيْرَ مِنَ العَمَل البَارِحَة ؟

Instructor : Yes I had too much work

هو : نَعَمْ كَانَ عندي عَمَل كَثِيْر جِدَّاً

Instructor : You want to say : unfortunately

هو :آَسِف

Instructor : Literally this means : I'm sorry

هو :أَنَا آَسِف

Instructor : Say " unfortunately" for a man

هو :آَسِف

Instructor : I still have too much work

هو : مَازَالَ عندي عَمَل كَثِيْر جِدَّاً

Instructor : And tomorrow I have to go to the city

هو : وَغَدَاً يَجِبُ أَن أَذَهّب إلَى المَدِينَة

هو : قُلْ :

Instructor : Unfortunately I still have too much work

هو : أَنَا آسِف ، مَازَالَ عندي عَمَل كَثِيْر جِدَّاً

Instructor : Now say " unfortunately " or " I'm sorry " for a woman

هي : أَنَا آَسِفَةٌ

Instructor : She says : I still have a lot of work today too

هي : مَازَالَ عندي الكَثِيْر منَ العَمَل أَيْضَاً

Instructor : How does a woman say :
" I'm sorry " or " unfortunately "

هي : آَسِفَةٌ

Instructor : Tell her : later , I have to go to the city

هو : فيما بعد ، يَجِبُ أن أَذَهّبَ إلى المَدينَة

Instructor : I still have a lot of work

هو : مَازَالَ عندي الكَثِيْر من العَمَل

Instructor : Now your friend asks : do you know Salwa  ?

هي : هَلْ تَعْرِف سَلوى ؟

Instructor : She says : do you know her ?

هي : هَلْ تَعْرِفها ؟

Instructor : How does she ask : do you know her ?

هي : هَلْ تَعْرِفها ؟

Instructor : Say : yes I know her

هو : نَعَمْ أَنَا أَعْرِفها

Instructor : Do you remember how to say : I saw the city

هو : رَأَيتُ المَدِينَة

Instructor : Now try to say : I saw him yesterday

هو : رَأَيتُه البَارِحَة

Instructor : She says : ah , you know him

هي : آه ، أَنتَ تَعْرِفه

هو : قُلْ :

Instructor : Yes , I know him well

هو : نَعَمْ ، أَنَا أَعْرِفه جَيِّداً

Instructor : Say that he's a friend of yours

هو : هُوَ صَدِيْقِي

Instructor : He lives in Damascus

هو : هُوَ سَاكِن فِي دِمَشْق

Instructor : Say again : I saw him yesterday

هو : رأيتُه البَارِحَة

هو : قُلْ :

Instructor: I know him well

هو : أَنَا أَعْرِفه جَيِّداً

Instructor : But I don't know his wife

هو : لَكِن لا أَعْرِف زَوجُه

Instructor : How do you say : his wife ?

هو : زَوجُه

Instructor : Try to say : unfortunately ,
I don't know his wife

هو : آسف ، لا أَعْرِف زَوجُه

Instructor : How would she say : she's Canadian

هي : هِيَ كَنَدِيَّة

Instructor : Now say again that you don't know his wife

هو : لا أَعْرِفُ زَوجُه

Instructor : Your friend says : she's a friend of mine

هي : هِيَ صَدِيْقَتِي

هو : قُلْ :

Instructor : I think his wife is Canadian

هو : أَعْتقدُ أنَّ زَوجُه كَنَدِيَّة

Instructor : I know him but I don't know his wife

هو : أَعْرِفه ولَكِن لا أَعْرِف زَوجُه

Instructor : She's Canadian

هي : هِيَ كَنَدِيَّة

Instructor : Your friend says again :
his wife is a friend of mine

هي : زوجُه صَدِيْقَتِي

Instructor : Now you want to ask her : do you have time ?

هو : هَلْ عندكِ وَقْتاً ؟

Instructor : To have coffee ?

هو : لتَشْرَبي القَهُوَة ؟

Instructor : In this case you're using drink
to mean have a drink , say : time to have coffee

هو : وَقْتاً  لتَشْرَبي قَهُوَة

Instructor : How do you ask her : do you have
time to have coffee ?

هو : هَلْ عندكِ وَقْتاً  لتَشْرَبي قَهُوَة ؟

Instructor: She answers : yes I have time

هي : نَعَمْ ، عندي وَقْتا ً

Instructor : But unfortunately , not much time

هي : لَكِن آَسِفَةٌ ، لَيْسَ وَقْتاً  كَثِيْراً

Instructor : I have to go to the city later

هي : يَجِبُ أن أَذَهّب إلى المدينة فيما بعد

Instructor : Referring to a friend , she says
: I saw a colleague of mine yesterday

هي : رَأَيتُ زميلي البَارِحَة

Instructor : How does she say : his name is Charles

هي : اِسْمُه تشارلز

Instructor : How does she say that she saw him yesterday ?

هي : رأيتُه البَارِحَة

Instructor : She asks if you know him

هي : هَلْ تَعْرِفُهُ ؟

هو : أَجِبْ : نَعَمْ أَعْرِفُهُ

Instructor: I know him well

هو : أَعْرِفُهُ جَيِّداً

Instructor : How would she say : his daughter

هي : ابنَتُهُ

Instructor : Your friend says : he's here with his older daughter

هي : هُوَ هُنَا مَعَ ابنَتُهُ الكبرى

Instructor : He lives in Washington

هي : هُوَ سَاكِن فِي واشنطن

Instructor : But he likes Damascus a lot

هي : لَكِنه يُحِبُّ دِمَشْق كَثِيْراً

Instructor : Referring to Charles , she says :
his daughter is a friend of mine

هي : ابنته صَدِيْقَتِي

Instructor : We ate at a fish restaurant yesterday

هي : أكلنا في مطعم سمك البَارِحَة

Instructor : I saw him yesterday

هي : رأيتُه البَارِحَة

Instructor : We spoke Arabic with the waiter

هي : تحدثنا العَرَبيَّة مَعَ النَّادِل

Instructor : His daughter is a friend of mine

هي : ابنته صَدِيْقَتِي

Instructor : Ask her : do you still have time to have coffee

هو : هَلْ بعدُ عندكِ وَقْتاً لتَشْرَبي قَهُوَة ؟

هو : الآن هِيَ تَقُول :

Instructor : Yes , I have the time now

هي : نَعَمْ عندي وَقْتاً الآَن

Instructor : Now say : alright , me too

هو : حَسَنَاً ، وأَنَا أَيْضَاً

Instructor : At the café she sees the man she
knows , she says : there's my colleague

هي : زميلي هناك َ

Instructor : Now your colleague says : I also saw him yesterday

هي :  أَنَا أَيْضَاً رأيتُه البَارِحَة

Instructor : His wife is a colleague of mine

هي : زَوجُه زميلتِي

Instructor : She's Canadian

هي : هِيَ كَنَدِيَّة

Instructor : Now your friend has to leave ,
how does she say : bye

هي : بإذنك  

Instructor : Now you're talking with a colleague
, ask her if she has time to have tea with you

هو : هَلْ عندكِ وَقْتٌاً  لتَشْرَبِي الشَّايَ مَعِي ؟

Instructor : You go to a café , ask her :
what would you like to drink ?

هو : مَاذا تَحبيْنَ أَنْ تَشْرَبي ؟

Instructor : You say : a glass of tea

هو : كَوباً  مِنَ الشَّاي

Instructor : Now ask : would you like a glass of tea ?

هو : هَلْ تَحبِيْنَ كوباً  مِنَ الشَّاي ؟

Instructor : She answers : yes , thank you

هي : نَعَمْ ، شُكْرَاً

Instructor : Now she wants to say :
I always drink green tea

هي : أَنَا دَائِمَاً أَشْرَبُ الشَايَ الأخضر

Instructor : How would she say " green tea "
literally " tea green "

هي : شَاي اَخضر

Instructor : She says : I always drink tea

هي : أَنَا دَائِمَاً أَشْرَبُ الشَّاي

Instructor : Say together " I drink " , " I'd like to drink "

هي : أَنَا أَشْرَب ، أَنَا أَحبُ أَنْ أَشْرَب

Instructor : How does she say : I always drink green tea

هي : أَنَا دَائِمَاً أَشْرَبُ الشَايَ الاَخضر

Instructor : She says : I never drink coffee

هي : أَنَا لَا أَشْرَبُ قَهُوَةً أَبَدَاً

Instructor : How do you say " never " in Arabic ?

هي : أَبَدَاً

Instructor : Now here's the word for " beer "

هي : بِيرَة

هو : قُلْ :

Instructor : Always

هي : دَائِمَاً

Instructor : Never

هي : أَبَدَاً

Instructor : How does she say that she never drinks beer

هي : أَنَا لَا أَشْرَبُ البِيرَة أَبَدَاً

Instructor : You say I want a glass of tea too

هو : أُريدُ كَوباً مِنَ الشَّاي أَيْضَاً

Instructor : Green tea

هو : شَاي اَخْضَر

Instructor : How does your colleague say that
she always drinks green tea

هي : أَنَا دَائِمَاً أَشْرَبُ الشَايَ الاَخضر

Instructor : I never drink beer

هي : لا أَشْرَبُ بيرة أَبَدَاً

Instructor : I don't like beer or green tea

هي : لا أُحِبُّ البيرة ولا الشَّاي الاَخْضَر

Instructor : She says : I'd like a glass of green tea , please

هي : أَريد كوبا ً من الشَّاي الاَخضر مِنْ فَضْلِك

Instructor : Ask where the waiter is

هو : أين النَّادِل ؟

Instructor : Ask her if she would like to have some red tea

هو : هَلْ تحبِيْنَ بَعْضَ الشَّاي الاَحْمَر؟

Instructor : Or some green tea

هو : أَو بَعْضَ الشَّاي الاَخْضَر؟

Instructor : How does she say : she never drinks red tea

هي : أَنَا لَا أَشْرَبُ الشَّايَ الاَحمرَ أَبَدَاً

Instructor : How does she say that she always drinks green tea

هي : أَنَا دَائِمَاً أَشْرَبُ الشَّايَ الاَخضر

Instructor : You say : you always have green tea

هو : دَائِمَاً أَشْرَبُ الشَّايَ الاَخْضَر

Instructor : Say that you never drink red tea

هو : أَنَا لا أَشْرَب الشَّايَ الاَحْمَر أَبَدَاً

Instructor : And I never drink beer

هو : و لا أَشْرَبُ البيرة أبداً

Instructor : I always drink green tea or coffee

هو : دَائِمَاً أَشْرَبُ الشَّايَ الاَخْضَر أو القَهُوَة

Instructor : Now the waiter arrives , tell him
:a glass of green tea please

هو : كوباً  من الشَّاي الاَخضر مِنْ فَضْلِك

Instructor : And a glass of red  tea

هو : وكوباً من الشَّاي الاَحمر

Instructor : Ask her if she has been to Lattakia

هو : هَلْ ذَهّبتِ إلى اللَّاذِقِيَّة ؟

Instructor : How does she tell you that..
no she hasn't been to Lattakia

هي : لا لم أَذَهّب إلى اللَّاذِقِيَّة

Instructor : I still haven't been to Lattakia

هي : لَمْ أَذَهّب بعدُ إلى اللَّاذِقِيَّة

Instructor : She says : I'm sorry

هي : آَسِفَةٌ

Instructor : Unfortunately , I have to leave now

هي : آَسِفَةٌ ، يَجِبُ أن أرحل الآن

Instructor: I have to go to the city

هي : يَجِبُ أن أَذَهّبَ إلَى المَدِينَة

Instructor : Referring to a woman , she says : I will see a
friend of mine

هي : سَأَرَى صَدِيْقَتِي

Instructor : After you say good bye ,
how does she say it in response to you ?

هي : حفظكَ الله

هو : قُلْ :

Instructor : bye..the new form ..

هو : بإِذْنِك
